Peter Buckley respect.
Peter Buckley respect.
It was a nice touch inviting Peter Buckley and the other centurions to the BBB of C anniversary.
Although his record is full of losses, he is a much better fighter than his record indicates, to still get in the ring after 200+ fights is proof of this, and how often does he get stopped. He fights all the up and coming young fighters and they all do their best to get him out of there, but his cross arm defence holds true, BN called him in this weeks issue professor Buckley, he really does know his business, wouldn’t it be nice if they did a good piece on him, I am sure it would give him as much pleasure as winning a world title to get the admiration and respect I think he deserve.

Not seen much of him fight, in fact wouldn't even know what he looks like, but know he's fought so many young up and comers who have become names after fighting him, and though he has lost most he has got in the ring with practically anybody, regardless of their weight at exceptionally low notice at times.
Respect to somebody, that though will never set the sport alight, shows a genuine desire to participate in it.

I had my first in-depth look at Buckley's record today. I've got even more respect for the guy now. 187 losses, but only 9 stoppages, very impressive considering some of the names he's been in with. It's testament to the guy's dedication and endurance that we've talked about him giving newer prospects like Mitchell rounds. A credit to the sport.
Peter Buckley
Yeah, He's the biz. One tuff mutha. It's not often he gets stopped. He's a hard man to shift. A credit to the game, definately.
Many of these were compasionate stoppages in which Buckley wasn't seriously hurt (i.e. the Naz rematch).glittermonkey wrote:I had my first in-depth look at Buckley's record today. Re: Peter Buckley respect.
I've actually seen Peter Buckly fight live a number of times, also I actually was ringside to see him WIN a fight by staoppage over Telfords Brian Robb over ten years ago, it was a cracking fight a lot closer then it was reported in the press. Buckley was a lot more aggresive than usual in that fight, I assume because he fancied his chances to win, and he did by stoppage. It was one of the best small hall fights I've seen, the atmosphere was great.tonyevs wrote:It was a nice touch inviting Peter Buckley and the other centurions to the BBB of C anniversary.

Peter Buckley is indeed a credit to boxing over 200 fights and still as sharp as a tack, well that speaks for itself.
I read once an interview with him were he was asked who was the best fighter that he had ever faced, his answer was Duke McKenzie.
Did anyone see that documentary on Nobby Nobbs on TV about 3 years ago it was really interesting, I'm gutted I don't have it on tape, it gave a great insite into the 'real' world of Boxing.bennie wrote:Pete Buckley's a defensive master - as is stablemate Anthony Hanna. A Nobby Nobbs line to a fighter getting ready to get into the ring for a fight.

I've watched Buckley on numerous occasions and to be honest, in general, Peter Buckly's fights are boring to the extreme.
You'll get these young prospects get in the ring looking all menacing and ready for busness but you have to giggle as over the next four-six rounds they hardly land any serious bombs and by the fourth round are confused and basically fed up their inability to solve how to get through to him, while Peter just plods along, looking totally unmoved by it all.
He's a boring old fart but what is funny is, he'll tuck up but when a prospect gets a bit too lairy, he'll come out of his shell with a few punches (he did this and actually managed to floor Kevin Lear a few years ago) and it makes you think 'if you did that a bit more often maybe you'd win a few more!' but he does what he sets out to do and I'd imagine makes a tidy little sum at the end of the year. Still don't know if I'd want to go through what he does to earn my cash but fair play to him.

The Board also invited Billy Waith to the 'do' as one of the centurions, which was a fantastic gesture to a fantastic ex-pro.
But Billy was still six short.

Buckley at some point became an opponent, and must make a fair whack when you see how often he fights. He's fought them all,
The reason he fights so defensively is because if he wins too many, he won't earn much as an opponent, as he is brought in more often than not to give young fighters a few frustrating rounds early in their careers.
also, if he gets knocked out, he won't be allowed to fight for what is it 30 days, so it's in his interests to protect himself so he can fight often.

The fighter in question was Brian Coleman, who was sufficiently warmed up this weekend to sensationally stop Richard Swallow. Another of the under-appreciated long standing centurions...see report at http://www.britishboxing.netKOJOE90 wrote:Did anyone see that documentary on Nobby Nobbs on TV about 3 years ago it was really interesting, I'm gutted I don't have it on tape, it gave a great insite into the 'real' world of Boxing.bennie wrote:Pete Buckley's a defensive master - as is stablemate Anthony Hanna.
