What was the most emotional fight you watched?

Post by witherspoon »

........and why?
National pride?, personal sympathy? Did you shed the odd tear?

I welled up with pride when Witherspoon flattened J L Gonzalez. Just as much for the fact that he showed that he was capable of preparing himself seriously for a fight and getting into 'something approaching' shape as for his performance.

In recent times, nothing even approaches the way I felt watching Pacquiao-De La Hoya. As an ardent Golden Boy follower (easily amongst my all-time favourite ringmen), it was an awfully, awfully bitter pill to swallow. I really felt sick upon learning of the result, & sicker still watching it for the first time, a few weeks later.

Still, nothing eclipses the first fight I ever watched --- the one which made me the fight fan I am today --- Foreman knocking out Moorer, viewed live. Quite a fight to enter an interest in boxing on, & it made Big George my #1 all-time favourite. I was only ten at the time, but I got plenty emotional.

Moorer was my fav fighter growing up and after being on an emotional high after the Holyfield fight that Foreman fight really gutted me. I remember that Lamply line "It Happened!" just echoing through my head. I was sitting there on my Grandmothers rocking chair, brother on the couch and the nurse that use to watch my uncle laughing at me hysterically "Big George murdered that boy" and I was just :oo looking at the screen emotionally paralyzed. I had an once of hope when Moorer picked up his head and looked like he was getting up at 3 or 4 then put his head back down and called it a day.

Hatton getting stopped by Mayweather was another emotional fight that happened recently. We were at the bar and I am not sure if it was the drink fogging my perception of the fight but at times especially in the beginning Mayweather was almost no match because Hatton was zoning. Reality started to sink in and my logical side started to shine through and I was just waiting for the decision to hear Mayweathers name called as winner. Didn't think he'd get stopped though.

It was rough seeing Buddy pull the plug on Malgnaggi in the Hatton fight especially because you can tell the man wants to be part of history so bad and be considered one of the great ones. Seeing Taylor slump over against Pavlik in the 7th was bittersweet I was routing for Pavlik but seeing Taylor lose like that wasn't that great. Green and Codrington was pretty freightening as well Codrington is a good guy and it's tough seeing guys you don't neccesarily route for being out.

Another few were seeing Danny Williams battle back with a dislocated arm go on to deck Potter 3 times in rout to one of the most courageous moments in all of boxing history. Seeing Danny Milano chose to be in the Malnaggi corner vs. Cotto as cutman when he could of had an enormously bigger payday being cutman for Tarver in Las Vegas because "the kid needed me more." ... and he sure as hell did that night. That was a rites of passage fight in its own right, a great display of will and courage.

Seeing fighters, their family and fans robbed of glory and potentially bigger purses down the line pisses me off as well. Dinanzio getting majorly jipped by the judges when he outright won that match with Ayala (117-111 on my card) and I think it was back to back blackeyes for boxing when Castillo wasn't given the decision against Mayweather the first time around and then Medina lost to Tapia in a bout he clearly deserved to win. What about Eder Gonzales and Coggi debacle overseas that was one of greatest travesty's I have ever seen.

But, if we are going to talk emotions then for me nothing can really compare to witnessing a brother, father, sister, family member or good friend in there especially, if it is a fight with a live opponent and they are facing adversity. Seeing my brother fight Lucian Gonzalez was pretty emotional he wound up losing a decision but he came back from a knockdown and didn't take a backwards step. We were in Reading, PA on the Rahman - Lawerence card and Lucian had the home crowd advantage and the place was really pumping that night. The whole crowd was on their feet throughout the whole fight I'd say that was one of the best fights I have seen live.

That's a tough call. If I had to pick one, it would probably be George Foreman regaining the title against Michael Moorer. :)

Don't really get emotional.

But Hopkins v Pavlik was a pretty special bout for Hopkins. What he did that night was insane, especially staring down at the camera's.

Muhammad Ali's career has been a pretty emotional one too.

tyson vs lennox lewis
as a big tyson fan it was very sad to see what he had become and all of the concentration, speed and skill that he had lost because of people screwing him over

Buster | Tyson was a shock as well. When Tyson dropped Douglas I didn't know if Buster would make it but had the feeling that if he didn't Tyson's cloak of invincibility was gone for good.

easily holyfield-tyson I.

im not sure what people felt watching louis-schmeling II, but i had a feeling of elation...like GOOD triumphed over EVIL. seriously.
something chemically must have snapped inside of me releasing endorphins. i was with a bunch of guys i wouldn't even high-five normally, and here we were hugging each other. :o

it was just an amazing feeling, like something was put right in the universe. and the weird thing was i was able to recapture alot of feeling in the days and weeks after that by just describing the fight to people that didn't see it.

Tyson-McBride, was truly an end of an era, whatever hope was left following the one sided Lewis blow out, was erased completely after Tyson's loss to the lumbering Irishman.

Ali-Holmes, but thats a no brainer, I dont think anyone loves to see their idols get so demolished.

I loved the 80s rivalry and always felt bad for Hearns who always put up a great fight in defeat but never quite won the big one. He lost his chance at a rematch with Leonard because of the retirement. Then he loses his chance to rematch hagler when Ray comes back.

Then when the rematch with Ray finally comes off Hearns looks like a decent breeze could buckle his knees. i thought he had no chance.

When he drops Leonard for the first time you can see the years of hurt just falling away from Tommy. As a big fan of the way Hearns conducted himself in the ring I was very pleased for him.

I understand what you mean, but in my opinion, all that good vs evil, that was a load of bollocks in my view. It was the media who tried to hype that up. Holyfield won because he was the more competent fighter on the night, simple as that!

there was no GOOD vs EVIL hype before the fight though. thats part of the point. it simply evolved from the fight. ALL media concern before hand was for holyfields health and that the fight shouldn't happen was a very popular theme. remember holyfield was coming off a critically bashed fight with czyz and of course before that his sudden fatigued knock out loss to bowe.

Benn-Mclellan.

Spent the entire time jumping up & down, probably lost about a stone through my pores, then at the end I cried. I felt utterly sick afterwards for about a week.

Never been able to watch it since.
