Simple question - How shot was Barrera ??
Simple question to answer.
How shot was Barrera ?
I thought he looked shot in the video i saw of him in his last fight and watching the fight last night confirmed that IMO, Barrera is shot to pieces and should retire. If he does'nt retire, someone down the line will give a right beating and i don't want to see that happen to a great like Barrera
What do you guys think ?

hes not shot at all. its a shme consdering hes 35. dont just write him off. just because khan won the fight over the cut over MABs head.im sorry to say this , but MAB was robbed simple as that.

Watching the fight again, I think it is very hard to say. He was fighting amid a sea or red for most of the fight. Before the head clash, Barrera was looking sharp.

yes he was. until the blood was gushing dwon him .his corner men were not doing there job with healing the cut eye. its a shame though. i had mab to win this though. like most of the ppl.
Re: Simple question - How shot was Barrera ??
I don't think he was shot, he was just out of his weight class against a younger, larger and faster opponent. Depends on what you class as a shot fighter really, a shot fighter to me is a man who can no longer take a punch, Graham Earl for example.
Re: Simple question - How shot was Barrera ??
Barrera is clearly a long way past his best now, but in retrospect Khan was completly the wrong fight for Barrera. I picked Barrera to win last night due to Khans poor defense and chin and Barreras ring intellegance, but Khan was far to fast and mobile for Barrera. The cut didn't help things for Barrera but I really don't think Barrera matched up well against Khan and I didn't see anything to suggest Barrera would have won without the cut. I think while Barrera is faded he would have given a much better account of himself against a slower fighter who didn't posses Khans phyisical advantages.

Barrera isnt shot and its unfair to judge him at all on last nights performance. He is slower, thats a fact but after 72 fights and at 35 you would expect that. His vision and ability to concentrate were impaired by the gash so he wasnt able to show what he can still do. After such high hopes of a good fight, the accident ruined everything and neither man proved a thing. Khan can take no glory for getting the decision, that was an enormous cut that will have required several stitches.

If you look at that last video of Barrera fighting the guy where he gets his eye cut, which is the one before the Khan fight, he looked very slow, out of shape, miss-timed punches, no reflexes etc. It would have made no difference if Barrera had or had'nt of developed that cut against Khan, he was always going to lose. Khan had him in trouble virtually from the opening bell and Barrera looked like a domestic stiff that had been brought in for a fighters debut as a pro, he was really poor. Barrera is not siuited to fighting at lightweight and one top of that is his age and the fatc that he has been very inactive in recent years. Khan was a lot bigger and faster than Barrera and was always going to win the fight, you could tell that from the first round. I do agree that the fight should have been stopped earlier, because the cut was as bad in the third as it was in the 5th and had got no worse, so in that respect in should'nt have gone to any scorecards at all. But that still does'nt hide the fact that Barrera is a shot fighter, who is 50% of the fighter who fought Pacquaio and Marquez 18 months to two years ago. A simple equastion to make is when he fought Pacquaio the last time. He cause Pacquaio a lot of problems at times and Pacquaio is a far superior fighter to Khan, but has a similar style, in terms of the hand speed. If Barrera fought Pacquaio now, he would get murdered and that was'nt the case a couple of years back. Some are suggesting that if Barrera fought a quality lightweight who did'nt have Khan's fast hands etc, then he would still do well, but that is just pure delusion. Barrera is shot and should retire

Re: Simple question - How shot was Barrera ??
My definition of a shot fighter is someone that once would have beaten ordinary opponents in some style and can no longer do so. If Barrera fought any of the current lightweights or super-feather weights for that matter, he would get well beaten, where as five years ago, that would'nt have been the case.banjo wrote:I don't think he was shot, he was just out of his weight class against a younger, larger and faster opponent. He would no longer be able to beat the likes of Pacquaio, Marquez, Funika, Guzman or even the Diaz'
You just have to look at his movement, reflexes, timing etc, to see that he has'nt got it anymore

A little bit more passed it than the MAB who was robbed against Marquez

Re: Simple question - How shot was Barrera ??
I don't think he was as shot as some people are making out. Yes in his previous fights he's looked crap but he was fighting complete non descripts. A guy like Barrera who has seen it all, done it all, seen some more and done it all again is hardly going to be motivated for guys like Rojas and Ventura. They were simply fights to shake off a bit of ring rust and do a bit of competing at the new weight, if Barrera had gone out there and bombed them both out in 30 seconds it'd have been a waste of time.
Cut aside, the fight went pretty much as I was expecting. I expected Khan to start fast and look sharp, and win the early rounds and get comfortable. I expected Barrera to do his damage in the second half of the fight, show Khan he wasn't affected by his punches and start to get through with his experience as Khan tired. I never expected a quick start from Barrera.
So we get the cut too, Khan looks pretty sharp, fight stopped on a cut. Barrera never got a chance to go through the gears, Khan started as he always does, quick out of the blocks.
This fight proved nothing really, and this is why I think noises will be made for a rematch. Only next time I think there'll be a title on the line, one which neither of them really deserve to be competing for.

Re: Simple question - How shot was Barrera ??
Jesus Christ, this again. Barrera was clearly past his best, but he was not 'shot'. Without the cut he would have taken Khan's shots all night, began landing his own (since he would have been able to SEE) around the round 7 or 8 mark, and taken Khan out.
To say Khan would have won regardless of the cut is the same level of speculation. Khan would have certainly had to go the distance and Barrera was starting to land when the fight was conveniently stopped, and we weren't even halfway through the fight!
It's easy to see what you want to see here. Everyone who picked Khan by stoppage will be feeling mighty proud of themselves, when in reality they didn't pick the right result at all.

He didn't look past it in the Rojas or Ventura fights. And I always thought he gave a better account of himself in the Manny rematch than in the first one.

he never had the fighting sprit only the boxer mentally.
Re: Simple question - How shot was Barrera ??
im a great barrera fan but sad to say after so many great nights hes passed it and should stop now.he looked lacklustre and tired.i was pleased the fight was stopped due to the cut as i didnt want khan to knock him out, which i think he would of later on.
It was a terrible cut though and would of seriously hindered anybody ....khan was very lucky that it wasnt stopped before the end of round 4 and the fight be a no decision, i wonder if barrera knew that when the doctor first spoke to him

Re: Simple question - How shot was Barrera ??
IMO, he is way passed it, but far from shot.
The cut did not help, but Khan looked well throughout, and did not give Barrera a chance whenever he tried to get into the inside.
In all seriousness, Cut or No Cut, the fight would have been very similar. Barrera can't do much at LW now
