British Lightweights

Post by josh fg »

We now arguably have four lightweights on the edge of world/european class AAA, Jono, Murray and Khan, firstly I think its a same non of them have/look like fighting each other. Secondly where do people rate them.

thaxton is done now, reached his level

only chance he gets for a world shot is for marking time fight for a champ who wants an easy defence ala Jennings/Lockett

None of them are world class. The closest is Khan and he is yet to prove anything against proper quality opposition.

World class is being able to mix it with the likes of JMM, can you honestly see any of the above doing that.

Look at Jennings and Lockett. Great records, talented at domestic level, stepped up into genuine world class and the brutal truth was evident. The gulf between genuine world class and looking good in Britain is huge.

Take Enzo for example. Who has he actually beaten? When he steps up, he gets put in his place.

World class is in the top 20 in the world for me (i.e. able to compeet at the top level not having to win). I aggree with your criticism of Enzo's carrer (although don't know how that follows to the conclusion Britain can't compeet in any sport), but I think for a small nation whe have a lot of boxers who are around world class, Haye, Froch, Hatton are all in the top 3/5 in their weights in the world.

I worry that Thaxton is done but I thought that after the Romanov gight I think his level is just at the edge of european level. I'd really like to see the Thaxton Murray fight cos then we would see how good Muaary is, I think styalistcally it makes for an exciting fight.

Lockett had a crap record and was only a borderline top 10 British Middleweight.

world class is not JMM, That's elite (world class is when can compete against a top 15 fighter in a division and I think
Khan & Murray can do that).

Matey, how do you make Locketts record crap???

Going into the Pavlik fight he had 31 fights, 30 wins, 21 of them by knockout. Only one defeat. How on earth is that a crap record?? OK the fighters on there might have been shitty, but that was the point I was trying to make.

They come with great looking records, but it means jack shit when they get in with proper world class opponents.

Britain has had very few real world class boxers, sure some have been very good British and even european level guys, but they struggle to mix it with the real top world class guys about.
Calzaghe didn`t mix it with the top guys at the weight till they - and himself, were past their sell by date.
Naz, beat up on old former world class guys .. but failed in his 1st real serious test.

I my life time - we have never had anybody to compare to a Barrera, Mayweather jr., Jones jr., Cotto etc......

Lennox Lewis was true world class. Although he learnt his trade in Canada. He was British, but he was not trained and brought up in Britain.

The guy who smashed up Maccaranelli last night, started off in Britain, goes to the states to learn his trade. The difference out there is sparring, they swear by it. Sparring hard and long will set you up, rather than beating up no hopers on Friday fight night cards.

Well maybe that is something to do with it?

Its a debate that has run and run .. is lennox English or Canadian?? I just got the impression he used the British conection to fast track himself .. he fought for Canada in the Commonwealth and Olympics, he sounds more Canadian than British .. he works in the USA, and he chose to live in Jamaica ..

Because it was.

His record stops looking good if one just takes a quick look at the names on it. That is not a good record as far as I am concerned.

Lockett does not represent the typical British fighter who gets a World title shot. He never fought for the British or Commonwealth titles and he never beat a top 5 British fighter. He sucked.

Lewis won the British Title. Makes him british in my eyes. And commenting on the top 4 lightweights my choice would be going on merit.
1 - Alex Arthur (won, British, European and commonwealth title's)
2 - John Murray (Current British Champion)
3 - Amir Khan (won commonwelth)
4 - Jonathan Thaxton (would of been higher if he didnt lose a simple fight)

I just don't think Murray or Arthur to have an easier time than Khan did against Barrera and we also
saying Alex Arthur (weight drained or not who lost his title @126 & 130) is better than MAB even right
now its hard to believe that.

He won because he was younger bigger and faster and MAB's skills and experiance couldn't negate that.

not even, there was simply so much blood on Barrera"s face from round 1 there was no way he could fight, you couldn't even tell if he was or not too old.
