Cheers for Marco... BOO's for Khan

Post by whiskey »

I knew there were a few Khan cynics out there (me included) but it seemed like Khan was fighting in mexico last night and not down the road from his hometown.

He was boo'ed from the curtain to the ring by a large chunk of people in the crowd.

Unfortunately the manner of the win will not win these folk over neither.

I think it rattled him a bit.

A similar thing happened at the Hatton Homecoming, when lots of boxers appeared on the big screen who were there in the audience (such as Tyson etc) there was huge cheers. Even some of the B-list celebs got a cheer....

...But Khan appeared and the Boo's rang around the stadium.

Perhaps rolling up in a fleet of 4x4's and going straight inside did endear him to many fans seeking autographs. Especially when others like Billy Graham, Haye and Froch spent an age signing everything for everyone.

But nonetheless i didnt expect it last night in such a high-profile PPV fight.

Hatton's 21'st Pro fight was against someone called Giuseppe Lauri
Calzaghe's against a new guy Tyler Hughes

OK, Barrera is passed it, but he is leagues above those two guys

But 2 fights later Calzaghe fought Eubank who was no where near as passed it as Barrera was, and he didnt have his head split in 2
But Calzaghe was 25 when he fought Eubanks with a longer amateur career, Khan is 22 and who knows what he'll do in his next 2 fights
Exactly. Not to mention Eubank had to drain to get to SMW. And it was a Title shot!

have you see the current LW Title holders !

Interviewer - "Did Khan's speed surprise you ?"

MAB - "No, his speed didnt surprise me, and i didn't feel his punches, i just couldn't see."

this fight was basically the worst case scenario for everything.

Sure Khan looked fast and flashy, but everyone knew he had talent. Barrera could have taken those shots all night long and he caught Khan with a couple in the round before it was stopped. Without the cut, Barrera would have taken Khan into the trenches when Khan's pace slowed.

It's very likely Khan would have gassed into the championship rounds and Barrera would have started landing more.

Just feel totally robbed and sick that this shit can be passed off by Warren and Sky as a big-time win when in reality, without the cut or some bullshit premature stoppage Khan would have had to get through those championship rounds, and who here can honestly see him going the full 12 without Barrera catching him with something? Jesus Christ, we weren't even halfway through the fight.

Sad, sad night.

I was amazed that the fight was allowed to carry on past the 4th round, it should have been ruled a NC

It does make you wonder why they didn`t

The commentators actually said the cut was spurting blood .. surely the ref could see that even better??

Who decides who ref`s in fights like this?
I read before how certain refs can be given the star treatment from the fight promoters .. a kinda, see how good it is if we give you the job .. and not that other ref who ruled against our fighter last time

I haven't read through any of these pages.

You have to counterbalance the fact that Khan is an exceptionally quick handed and big LW with a questionable chin that fought a smaller legend past his best and at the end of a fantastic career. The cut definately spoiled what should have been an otherwise interesting spectacle. Did it make a difference? I think it did, because some of the questions that surround Khan weren't answered because of it.

Highly touted fighters, on their way up, beat legends on their way down - that's just the way the game has always been. Does this fight reveal anything more about Khan that we didn't know? A big no from me unfortunately.

I have no doubt the lad will win a world title - he has lots of world class offensive ability and under the guidance of Roach and the sparring he gets it would be a huge disappointment if he didn't.

The Herol Graham point is one I was thinking of last night. Jackson was blind and Graham got reckless and it ruined his legacy. But he is loved on here, even though he threw away a world title.

I think Hitman's point about "you must be biased to think Khan would have a chance against Marquez" (or something like that) is ridiculous. Khan is so fast and (at best) accurate, he would cause problems for anyone, Marquez included. I don't think he is ready for Marquez, but saying writing him off smacks of someone who spends too long reading the very negative posts on here.
Khan's chin is too weak to last the distance against Marquez, and I can't see Khan KOing him. Why is writing off a fighter who has never beaten anybody good and lost his only top-class competitive bout in 54 seconds ridiculous? He isn't even nearly ready for Marquez, who only last week beat a far better fighter than Khan in Diaz. Your comment smacks of someone who spends to much time listening to what Sky's commentators have to say.

I must admit, i also find it pretty ridiculous and lame how Khan was Boo'd.
I agree, it would have been a similar atmosphere had he been fighting in Mexico.

Cut or not Cut, part me was happy watching Khan dominate the bout just to deal with the hostile and pathetic crowd.

im sorry but dave parris and the doctor last night

Post by boxerbob »

should be suspended for letting that fight go 5 rounds

that cut looked around 2 inches long - see fightnews

it was so obvious that they were wanting barrera to get to the 5th round , a cut that size and the amount of blood should have made that fight a technical draw after 1 round

if it was khan that was cut like that im sure the fight would have been stopped

disgusting , totally disgusting

Is that right- if the fight was called off on an accidental cut in Round 4 Khan would not have won it?

Because he's 22 and we just don't know. Marquez is 35, Khan is probably the fastest lightweight out there. He couldn't cope with Chris John's speed and elusiveness too well. Marquez is also as small as Barrera. I met him once and he seemed a real little guy.

I also don't understand why everyone seems to think Khan would have slowed down late in the fight and Barrera would have ground him down. One thing freddie roach has gone on about is how good an athlete Khan is. Whereas Barrera hasn't been able to go at that pace in later rounds for a long time. The only way Barrera would have come on late on was if he hurt Khan, because I can't believe he would have outstayed him.

I think this is definately worth it's own thread, and should not be merged.
Hasim Rahman quit on his stool with a poxy cut to get a Technical Draw v James Toney, I don't even know why MAB wanted to continue.
Furthermore if he did want to fight on it should have definately been stopped, should have been stopped in the 1st really.
And it is also interesting, as Stu said about how the inter-continental belt was suddenly available, almost as interesting as having to interim champions at cruiser! I imagine they will be stripped now if they don't sign for FW!

Give us a break and get your head out of your arse, at no point was Barrera hurt during those 5 rounds he just had so much blood in his eyes he couldn't do much more than cover up when Khan unleashed.
Khan doesn't like to go into deep waters and that's exactly where Barrera would have taken him, had he been not cut.
The sole fact that this fight wasn't rules a NC when such a huge accidental gash opens up in round 1 is totally beyond me...
And what's even more beyond me is people giving credit to Khan for dominating a man who was half blind from round 1...

Doesn't the ref have the right to insist a fighter comes out, or he can be disqualified?

Totally agree Raff. Everyone who either says 'Oh Khan beat an older, smaller, weaker man', gives credit to Khan, or fails to acknowledge the cut whatsoever clearly has no knowledge of boxing.

The fact is, Barrera has walked through punches 10X harder than Amir fricken Khan's, and gone to war. Khan would have had to take 7 more rounds of hell and Barrera was starting to connect! Barrera would have found his range and done the business.

Amir's talk 'Oh I was going to knock him out brutally if the fight had continued' is fornicating embarassing. I feel so bad for Barrera that such a legend was made to look like an idiot by sky sports in front of so many people who didn't know better, many of whom have posted in this thread.

Maybe it's karma

Sucker punching my hero at a press conference, calling him a "poor little indian", always good to see Barrera lose.

Well you can include most of the veteran boxer writers out there in that statement, including Graham Houston.
The anti-Khan brigade apart, pretty much anyone could see that Khan battered an older, smaller fighter, kept him on the end of a lightning jab and completely dominated him.
Anyone who says MAB was about to take out Khan, if it wasn't for that damn cut, is bordering on the deluded.
Khan completely dominated the pre fight favorite and deserved his win, Get over it.

1. You read the Sun AND take it as a reliable source, this certainly shows your not too intelligent
2. He's clearly talking about the strategy to beat MAB

MAB had a gash from ROUND 1 and it was ACCIDENTAL...no need saying more, you can't judge a fight in those condition, that's why it should have been a NC but the ref's+ doctor's attitude smelled hometown cooking to me. You don't know what would have happened without the cut, anyone saying Khan would still have won easy without the cut needs to step off Khan's nuts.
Anyways, Khan has already been KTFO and it will happen again, he won't be getting a lucky cut on every opponent each time...
