Inconsistent Stoppages

Post by forcefraser »

Quite frankly the early stoppages in British rings is shocking.

Take the fight this Friday with Paul Appelby. He was fighting a well schooled/seasoned fighter and after Appelby landed a couple of shots the ref stops the fight. Pathetic. How are fighters lie Appelby supposed to learn the trade if fights are stopped so easily? Maybe the mexicans are so tough because they are actually in fights?

Nicky Cook, a world champion was also stopped too early. Ok he was down twice, but not that heavily and it was WORLD TITLE FIGHT, not a 4 round opener. That fight should not have been stopped so early.

Then we have Barrerra who is allowed to fight 5 round half blind with a huge cut on his forehead. The inconsistency is alarming.

The Enzo stoppage was spot on mind, he was gassed and I believe the fight showed us what some of us knew all along....

Yes, I agree there is inconsistencies. Its a tough job, so I don't mean it personally, but John Keane really should be just a judge - he stops fights way to early.

There is NO WAY the Barrera fight should have continued into the 5th round, that was horrendous - but lets not just blame the ref there, he was going on the Doctor's advice... apparently he saw that the cut was worst in the 5th! :KO:

As for the Maccarinelli KO - I'm not so sure, mainly cause there wasn't much time left in the round. He wasn't as bad as Khan in the first KD against Prescott.

I agree for most part but with Nicky Cook I don't think there was any point in letting it continue. The ref and everybody else saw Cook again falling short at "world level" just like he did with Luevano and what was the point in going through multiple knockdowns again?

I think it's a mixture of things, one of which is because the majority of Mexicans come from shithole areas where violence is on a par with Afghanistan or Iraq and areas of dire poverty where they grow up fighting on the streets. Bound to be tougher than some kid from a council estate in Manchester aren't they really?

As for the topic title I agree there are some ridiculous early stoppages Calzaghe v Manfredo springs to mind, also last night on the Hennessy bill a young prospect was knocking some guy from pillar to post yet the ref let it carry on. So there is some massive inconsistency.

If the Khan fight had ben stopped before the 5th, it would have been a no contest instead of going to the cards. I wonder if that had a bearing on why the ref let it go?

I don`t want to see people half killed in the ring, but I do want to see a fight. Young fighters need to learn how to finish a fight and relying on the ref to step in will only land them in the shit when they are in a real fight (in the states for example) when they need to get the guy out of there themselves.

It is completely different in the states, I remember Roy Jones Jr. battering some guy(may have been Bryant Brannon) and he actually asked the ref to stop the fight, the ref refused so Jones proceeded to spark him out.

It is partly beause of the level of opposition, the ref is not going to stand by and watch some poor journeyman take a beating against an often younger and stronger guy just for the sake of it.
If boxers were matched with guys who actually stood a chance, there would be fewer bad stoppages.
The Cook stoppage was not too hasty, I actually thought it should have been stopped sooner, I don't like to see a guy take unnecessary punishment.
Barerra should have been out of there after round 2 but it was let go on as if it was stopped before round 4, it would have been a no contest and that means no win for Khan!

The beating Brian Vera got from James Kirkland on the Hatton-Malignaggi undercard was BRUTAL.

The Appleby stoppage was rediculous.

that cut was horrific and it should have been stopped after two rounds.

Should have been a no contest, but I think the ref and doctor were feeling the pressure to let it go four. The cut didn't get worse did it? The only thing that changed that after four it could go to the cards and mean Kahn could win.

That fight would have been stopped after two if Kahn had been cut.

Would the ref of stopped some of the undercard fights if it was the prospect taking a few hard punches ? maybe they are given the benefit of the doubt by the ref, as they should have more ability to fight back.

Its very hard to call for the refs, they are seconds away from a disaster each fight.

Worst ever stoppage was Seah Hughes V Corcoran. Seemed just right out of the blue.

You can usually tell a bad stoppage if the fighter's immediate reaction is to be pissed off, and argue it straight away- shows their head is clear.

Exactly I dont understand about letting Barrera continue and suddently stop him at round 5, its like they did it on purpose to get an easy win where it should have been ruled a NC...it smells hometown cooking to me.
