The sky's the limit for stunner Khan - says Jeff Powell

Post by Quixall »

Here is an extract of an article, written by a supposed respected sports journalist - Jeff Powell

(Daily Mail - Mrach 16th page 69)

"Amir Khan is not so much back on track, as on the launch pad for a stratopheric rise to world titles and beyond. So overwhelming was Khan's blood-letting destruction of Marco Antonio Barrera in Manchester on saturday night, that his renowned American trainer, expects him to succeed Manny Pacquiao as the best pound for pound fighter on the planet, in due course. Freddie Roach should know. He schooles both Pacquiao and Khan at his Los Angeles Sweatshop and reports " When the pair of them get together in the ring to spar, it's like a cock fight, they are both so fast " Speed is the quinteessence of the modern champion and Roach enthuses, "Amir is a world class fighter already. The lightweight championship is only a couple of fights away, but since he has many of the same qualities as manny, he can be more than that. He's my next superstar. This performance against Barrera is his first step to greatness"

Then Powell says in his next paragraph, something which contradicts his first few paragraphs

" All right - as we suspected, all the more strongly, when this former king of the super-featherweights almost failed to make the 135lbs lightweight limit - this was not the Barerra who wrecked Prince Nasemm Hamed's career eight years ago. If not quite an EMPTY SHELL OF HIS OLD SELF, the 35 year old veteran of too many ring wars looked a SPENT FORCE......"

I don't know how journalists like this earn any decent reputation. It's ok for Freddie Roach to bull his man up and talk rubbish, but Powell is supposed to be a seasoned sports journalist, someone who should be able to tell the difference between hype and the real thing. Amir Khan fought a shot or extremely faded Barrera, a guy who is 35 years of age, has been inactive for a couple of years and only had a couple of fights at in the lightweight division. How on earth they can claim that Khan could become the next p4p king off saturday nights performance is unbeliveable and smacks of either delusion or sheer desperation to bull up a British fighter, now that Carl Froch is our only world champion.

Lets get the facts straight here. Khan has'nt even fought for a British title and taken on the likes of Thaxton or Murray. He has'nt fought for a European title. He has fought a lot of journeymen, no genuine calibre lightweights, mostly blown up super-feather weights like St.Clair and Gomez, been put down by the likes of Limond and sparked out by the unknown Prescott. That is the reality, which seems to have escaped the notice of people like Jeff Powel. All of a sudden, he spends a few months with Freddie Roach, faces a complete nobody in his comeback fight and then a shot or badly faded Barrera, wins both fights and can suddenly challenge Manny Pacquiuao to be the next p4p king.......Let's get real here

Khan has been managed well and has had good PR and media exposure from the start and can make a lot of people very rich. He is being treat with kid gloves and kept out of harms way, until he fights for a world title against a genuine lightweight elite fighter. Win or lose that fight and he will almost certainly lose, Khan, Warren and all the backers make a whole lot of money. If Khan trod the route to a world title in the orhadax way, ie, British and European titles, defend those titles, fight a few genuine top ten ranked lightweights, then get an eliminator etc etc, he would have lost well before being considerd for a world title shot and Warren and his backers know this, hence all the hype over beating a shot Barrera.

I personally don't think he deserves a world title shot, based on his performances, the titles he has won so far and the quality of his opponents, but it's boxing politics and finance that will get him a title shot and conveniently put his poor quality opponents and defeat to Prescott to one side.

Thoughts ?

I don't get what you find so offensive here?

yes it does but at the same time we all know he did not win that match fair. the only reason he won was coz MAB had blood pouring down him and was unable to carry on. however if Mab did not have a cut i reakon he would have caught khan and ko'd him.

Powell is a prick. His dirge on football is just as bad.

It's about selling papers and generating responses etc, I doubt he writes what he thinks.

Well i suggest you re-read the thread

My point is that Khan's career to date does'nt match up to the expectations and the blandishments that Powell is giving Khan. To suggest, as a seasoned journalist and someone who you say "knows his boxing", that Khan can become a future p4p king and beat the likes of Pacquiao, is utter nonsense, bordering on self delusion....

Powell can't hide behind Freddie Roach's words, because he uses Roach's words to quantify his belief, that Khan, can not only win world titles, but achieve greatness, by taking the mantle of p4p king. He could have easlly of refuted what Roach was saying or played his statements down a little, but he used them to advocate his own point of view. It's poor journalism, to simply pour out hype and make grand gestures and statements, when there is'nt a shred of evidence to support such claims and that can be seen quite easily, if you care to closely look at Khan's career, the opponents he has faced etc etc.

Powell should know better than to jump on the same bandwagon as allegedly, Sky sports, all its paid employees, associated media and boxing pundits like, Jim Watt, johnny Nelson and Nicky Piper, who all have a vested interest in what they say to a camera, due to their allegiance to Sky Sports Network....

To Claim that Khan may win a British or European title is credible. To claim that Khan will get a world title shot down the line is credible, considering his financial marketabilty. But to suggest that he will go onto win world "titles" and become a future p4p champion is utter nonsense and an opinion that deserves it's place in local rag or an over-crowded and excitable room at the Old Nag's head, amongst drunken pundits who neither care what they say, or say it to court controversy.

Jeff Powell has won awards for his writing Tony. He is not the sort of man who would put in any type of satrical humour in his articles, unless it was laid on thick enough for your average joe to see. He speaks for the average mail reader, who is more interested in Liverpool beating Man utd, than in Khan beating a fighter, who's name they could barely spell correctly. Powell knows this and that's why he is comfortable writing this tosh, because he knows that most die-hard boxing fans are'nt going to read it and be able to dissect his innane rantings about Khan.

No humour in that article Tony, Powell would'nt risk being made a fool of, he has a reputaion to keep amongst his peers and has far too big an ego to risk people not seeing any supposed humour and taking what he said at face value. No, Powell says what he does because he sincerely believes it, but i say he should take the blinkers off, have some objectivity and stop talking to allegedly :DDD

The Daily Mail are poor for sport, might have been the Mail, or maybe independent who dod a top 50 promising footballers list and ended up putting a fake footballer in from an article on wikipedia. Just shows how deep their knowledge and research goes.

Very true and their boxing coverage seems almost to be an after thought.....

Looking back, i can remember some pretty over-excitable articles on Audley Harrison and they were also by Jeff Powell, so i should hsve known better really :D

I am staggered how poorly the u.k press has reported the Kahn fight just reading hte sun now

BLOODY MARVEL BRUTAL KAHN BATTERS BARRERA TO GET BID ROLLING

Amir kahn moved one step closer to being crown king with a brutal two fisted assasination of Barrera.

It really is a discrace that Kahn can get so many plaudits from a fight that should have been stopped in the 1st or 2nd round and rules a N.C.

of cause he looked good fighting a half blind man, poor journalism all round

Very true,

The papers write for the masses and can get away with writing such tosh, because most casual sports fans and joe public will believe what is written about Khan. Something very dodgy about the fight not being stopped in the 2nd or 3rd round. It was'nt up to Barrera whether he could carry on, it was up to the ring side doctor and that cut was as bad in the 2nd and 3rd round, as it was in the 5th round, so it all stinks badly. All the headlines are about Khan battering "bloodied" Barrera, but if i head butted Mayweather, he would bleed aswell  I say let Khan fight one of Diaz', Funika, Guzman, Pacquaio etc etc and see if he has the potential of becoming a p4p chanpion :shame:

The coverage of boxing by the Mail has always been sub standard - In fact they are generally anti boxing.

So, quite honestly, a respected boxing journalist writing for the Daily Mail is not possible.

im not really by the way.

Depdns mate when I was writing for the BBN i liked boxinf news but now Im bit more of a casual fan I prefer BM.

Depends how much depth and detail you want also BN has a sizable chunk devoted to Am boxing and is more brit focussed I would say, bit too much detail for my liking these days though. Then again BN is weekly and BM monthly so i guess BN has to be more detailed to fill the pages.

BM is more generalistic but I prefer it these days as it gives me somink to do while im laid by the pool that doesnt make my head hurt. :TU:
