Nelson-May date set!
Longtime WBO cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson will return to Germany to make the thirteenth defense of his title against Rüdiger May on September 4. Nelson, from Sheffield, England, defeated then #1 Alexander Petkovic in Bayreuth last November. May, the mandatory challenger from Köln, comes in with a record of 39-2-3. Promoter allegedly said, "This will be a tough fight for Johnny but he is a model professional and expect him to keep hold of his title. Going to Germany would normally be a daunting prospect for any fighter but Johnny has travelled around the world fighting opponents in their backyards so he will not be bothered by it. Providing Johnny comes through on September 4, the fight I want to make is between him and the young Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli which I want to put on in December."

May came over to Sheffield to spar Nelson for the Petkovic fight. Johnny's now returning the favour by going to Germany to give his mate a crack. Don't expect too many fireworks in this one.

There never are these days when JN fights.

Effective and techincally very good but pleasing to the eye sometimes not.

johnny's fights are normally like sparring sessions..... this one loooks like being even more so!!!!

Nice touch by Johnny giving May a crack, decent money for both of them and little risk of May causing an upset

Well, he's in the final furlong of his career now so I wouldn't expect too much.

Johnny's career has been a bit of a dissapointment, it's a real shame he never got a crack at Jirov, Mormeck or Toney, I would have given him a chance against all of them, even Toney, who could be outboxed even in his prime.

I have always had a soft spot for JN despite some of the dull as ditch fights he has been in.

He has made a decent living, but I can't help feeling that he could have achieved a lot lot more and that the only thing stopping him has been himself.

in terms of training though, a model pro

Yep, that's my thoughts. After a very slow early career with lots of defeats, Johnny managed to become a technically excellent fighter, and has maintained excellent shape throughout his career. I too think he could have done more, but think he was just content with a decent living and less risk.

I don't think it helped that by the time he became a well rounded fighter he was already past his physical prime.

Well, if this his final fight then its a bit of a dissapointment. I would have been tipping the upset but reading Johnny's quotes on the teletext - it appears he's got May's number.

Nelson possibly by a SD, but should be a UD.

An interview with Nelson from last Friday I found.

Veteran champ fighting off the desire to retire

JOHNNY Nelson's last challenge to boxing is simple: 'Get me more fights or I quit.'

It could all be over by Christmas for Sheffield's reigning WBO cruiserweight champion. It will be if promoters can't find him a bout in between his September title defence date with German challenger Rüdi May and the turn of the year.
Nelson who has reigned as world champion cruiserweight for a hugely creditable five years, is adamant. "If they come to me and offer a fight in March or April, I'll say 'no thanks' and walk away."
At 37, no-one would blame him. He has fought 57 times, defended the WBO belt 11 times, been hero-turned-villain-turned-hero.
Veteran trainer Brendan Ingle insists that Nelson, the hapless amateur who turned ultra-proficient pro, is the biggest success story to emerge from his Wincobank gym. No matter that Herol Graham and Naseem Hamed preceded him into boxing's big time.
Graham quit and mistakenly tried again; Hamed quit all but talking about it. Nelson knows the clock's against him and is prepared as he could be for the final bell.
"This time last year I said I've got 18 months left at the top level, when I know I'll be able to perform at that level," he said. "Over the past three years, I've boxed once a year. That's not the fault of my training. I don't know who to blame but I cannot fight just once a year. The older you get the harder it gets. I can't afford to be getting ring rusty."
Alarm bells raung in Nelson's head when he scraped a draw with Guillermo Jones in 2002. Since then only one more fight has been fought.
"I've said that if things carry on as they are I won't be boxing next year," he said.
"If they could squeeze me a fight in after September before Christmas, fine.
"I've been the champion for five years and it's just not logical that at 37 I should be boxing once a year."
Nelson will go to Germany to meet the challenge of May. It will be the last fight under his current contract with allegedly.
"John Ingle and Dominic Ingle have a few irons in the fire," he revealed. "I know there are opportunities there. I know Frank is interested and wants to continue with the contract but anyone with commonsense wouldn't carry on like this. I need to be boxing every three months."
Whether Nelson on or not boxes beyond September remains in the balance but it won't be a fighter broken in any sense of the word who departs the ring.
He's comfortably off and has been offered TV work following fights with Sky Sports.
"It will be a very easy decision. I love the game but I'm not an idiot," he said.
