Hamed/Barrerra

Post by Roars Like Me »

Did anybody see the rerun on sunday, it was the build up and little bit of the fight.
I don't recall seeing it before but it was quite interesting. The media tended to make his brothers come across quite badly. In this show, at least, they seemed fine to me. Hamed's first day of sparring was rubbish and that luckily that was aknowledged by Manny Stewerd. He did say he thought Hamed was the best Featherweight of all time before that mind you, I think he is always over generous when it comes to promoting fighters that he is involved with.
Anyway it kept me entertained yesterday, I kinda miss the egocentric little shite.

The folder, Naz - you should've looked through the folder!

I wish there were more boxing documentaries with a mix of active and retired fighters in them.

I'd like to see something about Lloyd Honeyghan, he sounded like an interesting character. Does he have an autobiography out?

I vividly remember a part of that show where Hamed and his crew arrive in their penthouse suite. Hamed just goes on and on like some spoilt rich rapper sort. He seemed far more focussed on being a celeb, the fight was in the back of his mind and was in the bag as far as he was concerned. Cant win them all!

One thing kind of surprised me from the lead up to the Khan fight though. The press kept describing how Barrera had previously DESTROYED Hamed. What constitutes destroying some one? I'd have thought blasting them out or at least knocking them out, not necessarily cleverly dealing with your opponent without being particularly troubled on your way to a UD. Don't get me wrong, Hamed was effectively outclassed on the night, but destroyed?

Yes mate, it is. Flying your hairdresser over  :shame:

As for what constitutes "destroyed".... I'd say beating a fighter to the point where he's never the same again... like here. We don't know if he was destroyed physically - very unlikely, but Barerra definately destroyed Naz mentally.

I'm splitting hairs now, but 'destroyed' still doesn't seem particularly appropriate, whatever way you choose to look at it.

The hair cutting scene was cringe worthy TV. I also remember a funny part with Chris Eubank waffling on for ages and Naz turning around and saying something like "what the fornicate are you talking about chris?"

What was the name of this documantary?

Couldn't agree more - MAB had effective tactics and fought a good fight, but Hamed more or less played into his hands, and strangey turned up for what should have been his defining fight in the worsy condition, both mentally and physically, of his life. The star lifestyle got to him then, and he paid the price.

Wierd thing is, I think a year before, Naz would have had far too much even for the Babyfaced Assassin.

Great documentary, it showed just how much success had gone to Hamed head, had the fight taken place when it was originally meant to (96) Hamed would have flattened MAB.

It was on ESPN a couple of months back, truly embarrassing.

The haircut scene is the worst, where he gets a skinhead and the twat describes it as a piece of art.

Naz could only say: "That haircut is proper"

donut....his brothers are tossers as well....

I hated Hamed and I couldnt have done a better hatchet job than that...it was proof that all Riath was good at was spending his brothers money!!

It was a horrible fight to watch because I think on pure ability Hamed could have beaten MAB. But, you reap what you sow, as they say. The arrogant twat who wouldn't listen to his trainer and lived like a king, got too big for his boots and got served.

I was disappointed, but after watching the post-fight interview I was encouraged with how mature and sporting Hamed came across. He gave MAB his full dues but said he'd be back. As we all know he did eventually come back and was lack lustre to say the least. Despite what he said post-MAB, I don't think his head was ever quite right again and he didn't like the fact he was no longer top dog. Where as other fighters are able to go away, gather their thoughts and get their body and mind right for a proper comeback, I don't think Hamed could do it. For him it was too much to ask to go from being King of The World to anything less and he was scared that he might never get back to the top.

Ironic that a bloke who loved to indulge in the psychological part of the sport was ultimately beaten by that same part of the sport. Hamed didn't end up with a bruised ego, bruises heal. Hamed ended up with a badly scarred ego.

The haircut scene was outrageous. The fella flies all the way across the Atlantic and I swear he relieves him of about 11 hairs. It looks EXACTLY the same as when before he had it cut. I'm mean FFS I have shed more in the shower. If your going to leave Blighty to cut a man's barnet he could have at least have went to town on it. Chelsea Skinhead or something?

I don't think anyone can say that a prime Barrera vs a PRIME Hamed would have gone Naz' way. I think Barrera completely outclassed him, and also showed a chin on him that many people didn't think he had at the time of the fight.

Hamed never fought anyone in Barrera's league to really judge him.

Thats not saying he didn't have the ability, but I think it does Barrera a huge disservice to say that. Hamed was far closer to his prime than say Tyson was vs Lewis, Ali was vs Holmes etc.

Hamed was in his prime - he just wasn't prepared mentally or physically.

Actually, I do think the Morales fight took something from Marco. Never fought with the same intensity after. Obviously, he was still excellent and hardly shot - but never fought with quite the same desire and work rate after that night.

Completely schooled Naz all the same.

A prime is a subjective thing.

I would say that Hamed & MAB where both in their physical primes in 1996, had they fought in 96 I’m convinced Hamed would have knocked Marco out because Marco would have got involved in a punch up.

Fast-forward to 2000 and perhaps there both still in their physical prime, but Hamed has now lost the plot, arrogance has blinded him to the threat that Barrera poses & his attempts to add fundamentals have screwed up his style.

MAB on the other hand has tasted a knockout defeat & he’s learned from it, he knows he cant trade blow for blow with Hamed, so he boxes clever, refuses to engage Hamed in a punch up & boxes the unprepared Princes head off.
