Re: Potential British World Champions?
Munroe-definitely not, he fights in the strongest division in boxing.
Jamie Moore-maybe
Woods-maybe if he can avoid Chad Dawson
Macklin-after Saturday night I'd give him a chance if the belts became fragmented
Kevin Mitchell- he's quite likely for me, I'd fancy him to beat Roman Martinez and he'll probably get his chance soon.
Kell Brook-looks up to it technically and has enough power, possibly a bit chinny but with his age he's bound to get the WBO title at some point in his career.
Junior Witter-Might be fighting for the WBC interim title within the year and Devon Alexander aint nothing special so Junior has a decent chance.
Khan could grab a belt with the right opponent, no chance of being the true champion though.
Haye could possibly do it at heavyweight.........or be brutally ko'ed you just don't know.
Ricky Hatton is the Light-Welterweight champion of the World despite not possessing any of the 'big 4's' belts. He'll probably encounter one of those belts again before he retires though.
Enzo Mac could grab a belt again at some point.
Carl Froch has a belt.
After that the guys we'd be naming would be prospects and not fighters who have established themselves beyond British level really. But there will be fighters in there who can do it, they just have to show their promise in the time to come.

Not sure of your thinking here, Moore gave Macklin the licking of his life yet you seem to rate his chances higher than Moore's of winning a world titleBigEars wrote:Munroe-definitely not, he fights in the strongest division in boxing.

Re: Potential British World Champions?
Maybe that was the perception but I give Moore a higher chance. His disadvantage is that he has a smaller time period to do it and I think he has a lot more wear on him. Macklin has improved considerably aswell.Hagler2002 wrote:Not sure of your thinking here, Moore gave Macklin the licking of his life yet you seem to rate his chances higher than Moore's of winning a world titleBigEars wrote:Munroe-definitely not, he fights in the strongest division in boxing.

Moore could possibly beat the current version of Vernan Forrest, I'm not so sure about beating the other champions though.
Macklin is promoted by Warren and thus should Pavlik move up in weight, Macklin could get an easy(ish) WBO shot if he's done anything of note in the near future.
Being a Warren fighter makes it much easier to be a 'World Champion', look at the like of Nicky Cook. No disrespect to the guy a very good British, Commonwealth and European champion but he's simply not up to it at World level.

I found the comment on ITV4 on Saturday night somewhat unfair to Jamie
"macklin, who was winnign the fight with Moore until he ran out of steam"
Not how I remember the fight thats for sure.
nice to see Jamie in the ring congratulating Matt and also chatting to elcock afterwards too.

Exactly, its not just how good the fighter is Hagler, its how deep the division is. Middleweight is a weaker division than Light-middleweight and with Pavlik and Abraham due to move up to 168lbs it will mean Macklin has a better chance to become a world champion than Moore.

As soon as I saw Martinez ko Cook I thought this as well.BigEars wrote: Kevin Mitchell- he's quite likely for me, I'd fancy him to beat Roman Martinez and he'll probably get his chance soon.

He was, but he ran out of steam in round 3 and got knocked out in round 10.Wales wrote:Hagler2002 wrote:

Macklin was completely f*cked at the weight. Rumours said he lost 8lb in 4 days.
Re: Potential British World Champions?
From my memory Moore had seized control and was in the lead
Re: Potential British World Champions?
same here chris. I dont remember macklin suddenly slipping through exhaustion. I thought moore boxed superbly and old manned macklin.

i think both suggestions (exhaustion and getting old-manned) are correctWales wrote:same here chris. I dont remember macklin suddenly slipping through exhaustion. I thought moore boxed superbly and old manned macklin.
this is the fight that Jim Watt called correctly from rd2, that Macklin was putting too much into his shots and not paying enough attention to defence, and that it would prove to be his undoing.

Re: Potential British World Champions?
Brook, Moore, Khan......possibly Cleverly?
Perhaps a WBO champ as the well doesn't run that deep at the weight and most of the champs are getting on? A stretch, I know....
Witter has had his day IMO, though he still has class. Woods is the same.
Haye at heavyweight is another probability....

Re: Potential British World Champions?
What "type" of World Champions are we talking about?
David Haye, Ricky Hatton or Joe Calzaghe types or Enzo Maccarinelli, Nicky Cook or Alex Arthur types?
If it's the first, then taking out Haye, Froch and Hatton, then none listed will become the genuine number 1 at their respective weights.
A couple might blag a strap due to influential promoters and careful matchmaking though.
Billy Joe Saunders would be my tip for number 1 status providing he is matched correctly. Hope he doesn't spend the next 4 years knocking over stiffs before landing a WBO strap, he has the talent to gun for the real major honours.

Re: Potential British World Champions?
I'm gonna say Matt Hall if matched correctly, way way better prospect than cleverley and maybe even brook.

Re: Potential British World Champions?
After Macklin's demolition of Elcock you'd give him a shot in the piss poor middleweight division, would love to see him fight Duddy.
Re: Potential British World Champions?
For me:
Jamie Moore can get a world belt he looks in good nick.
Matthew Hall with Warren behind him can get a WBO belt or something.
Kel Brook should get one if he keeps his head down.
Cleverly could blag a WBO belt under Warren but for me isnt the real deal yet.

not sure about any of those tbh.TheCobra wrote:For me:

moore wouldn't beat guys like martinez, santos, dzinziruk or forrest.
verno phillips is the only beatable one for moore (have the ibf stripped him yet
no way on hall.
same goes for kell brook.
that welterweight division is so tough right now.
cleverly's lack of wallop worries me a bit.
kevin mitchell has a chance cos of the state of the super feather title picture right now.
same goes for khan with marquez likely to chase the money at 140 and titles splintering.

Maccranelli or Rees are well capble of gaining world titles against the right opponentswhicker wrote:Who have we got at the moment? Haye, unlikley, Khan - could be, Witter, ??? Hatton- ???,

The bigger question is whether we have another Hatton, Froch, Haye etc and at the moment there is no-one of that calibre on the fringes of the world scene. We will have to wait a few years yet to see the likes of Brook, Gavin or Saunders reach that level, but for now the cupboard is pretty bare.
