Fighters with Exactly same names?
Fighters with Exactly same names?
Just wanted to know has there ever been a fight in which both fighters had exactly the same names?
Im not talking about John scully vs john mcdonald type of fights, but john scully vs john scully type of fights. I know there are two james toney's and i know they havent fought each other and im not sure about any other boxers having same names.

Al Jones (Memphis) fought Al Jones (Miami) back in the early 70s.

I believe it would have at least been possible for an aging Jimmy Ellis that lost to Frazier in Ali's absence to have signed to fight the Jimmy Ellis that George Foreman fought and defeated in his comeback.
In never happened....but the timelines might have potentially allowed for it.
Yeah...I'm having a bit too much time on my hands today I guess.

How do you figure? Their careers begin & end no closer than fourteen years from one another. Seems pretty far-fetched they could've met.BoxBuzz wrote:I believe it would have at least been possible for an aging Jimmy Ellis that lost to Frazier in Ali's absence to have signed to fight the Jimmy Ellis that George Foreman fought and defeated in his comeback.

I said possible.....In 1984 It would have pitted a 20 year old Jimmy Ellis against a 44 year old Jimmy Ellis.
I do believe that boxers of this age discrepancy have faced each other in the history of the sport. But yes Jimmy the elder retired young and Jimmy the junior started late so it would indeed have been somewhat of a stretch...but nevertheless possible.

1984? That's a whopping five years before Idaho's Ellis even turned pro, & still bordering on a decade after Ellis of Kentucky's retirement.

GI...are you going to make me open up a dictionary and give you the definition of "possible"? Cuz if that's what you want....that's what you'll get.Goodnight, Irene wrote:1984? I assumed by "possible," you meant within the realm of vaguely plausible reality, though. What you're proposing isn't.
Re: Fighters with Exactly same names?
Timecop possible.
Re: Fighters with Exactly same names?
Actually, I think I might have read somewhere that this fight actually happened in 1984...in Saskatoon, an exhibition fight in the back room of some bar, I believe...if memory serves me right.Goodnight, Irene wrote:1984? Sorry, I couldn't resist...
Carry on.

I thought under this topic the two guys with the same name had to have actually fought each other. I don't see on either record where Jimmy Ellis fought a fellow named Jimmy Ellis.

I actually overheard a woman on the bus this morning saying that she was at a party where the host intimated that a fellow he was casually aquainted with 20 years ago at college had once been heard to cry out in his sleep the cryptic phrase "It is true!".
Yet more proof, if any more proof were needed, that both these fights did in fact occur.
Case closed.
