Vincente saldivar... question...

Didn't the great featherweight champion Vincent Saldivar die some years back?... I seem to remember reading about it in boxing news. His date of death is not listed on Box rec.... I'd be grateful for any info on Vincente.
Has he been elected to the boxing hall of fame?.... 8)

He's definitely dead, and i'm pretty sure he was inducted into the hall of fame in 1998 or '99. I've done a quick search for you and it didn't turn up much about him at all, and nothing about his death.

I can't remember if Howard Winstone received the honour on behalf of Saldivar when he was inducted.

Winstone was definitely present for Saldivar's posthumous induction and I can't think of any other reason why he would have been there.

Of course, Howard died the following year.

But Winstone died in 2000 didn't he? while Saldivar died in 1985?....
...why isn't Saldivars date of death recorded in Box rec?.... bit of a poor show there!...

What I'm saying is, Saldivar was inducted posthumously into the HOF in 1999, Winstone died the following year in 2000.

I THINK (but don't quote me) Saldivar died of lung cancer.

But I might be confusing him with someone else.

I think I have something at home which reports on his death... I'll check on it and get back to you in a couple of days.

Sorry man, very busy! Layne was six foot 2 I beleive but that is a bit of a guess so I'll try and find out for sure in the future ok! 8)

Never seen him fight, but my dad said that Saldivar was his favourite fighter. Curious to know what style fighter he was, anyone?

He was a very good fighter, a great fighter, very aggressive with good power and fast hands... he had great stamina and would get stronger as the fight went on... he often started fights slowly but overwhlmed his opponents in the end. He had a great chin and despite being called a pocket marciano by many he was a much better boxer than he was given credit for..... bit like Roberto Duran really.
