17th September 1901 Jeffries WKO4 Hank Griffin in San Francisco. Although Jeffries was champion this was not recognised as a title fight.

I have that as a 4-round exhibition in LA.
It was not a title bout because it was not an official bout.

No, both Griffin meetings of Jeffries were in Los Angeles, though there may have been a third I don't know of in SF (?). I'm referring to the fight they purportedly had, as Jeffries first fight in 1896. Not the 1901 Exh. anyone?

So there's no one here who's done their homework who can school me? Everyone rushed to answer when it was the easily-found date...

Until I see an independent account of this "fight" outside of standard boxing novella, I refuse to accept that it ever took place.
Jim Jeffries did not fight Hank Griffin in a finish fight which ended in a KO in 14 rounds in 1896.
Local or not, there would have been SOME report in SOME newspaper SOMEWHERE. If it's out there, please share. Anyone?
