Vegas style boxing in the UK?

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

Further to proposed changes in the UK gambling laws, it looks like we are already beginning to see the changes I predicted a few months ago.

Kerzner group, has just signed an agreement with the new owners of the millenium dome, to develop a large scale hotel and casino complex on the isle of dogs peninusula, ushering in the beginning of the gambling revolution.

Let's hope that the promoters in the country get in on the act and we get to see some major boxing events at these type of venues.

It may take a while before the public get into the vegas style experience, but once they do, it will mean we could see site fees and therefore a huge amount of money in the pot for future promotions.

The future for once, is looking bright.

Would be nice to see, do we really have the 'stars' over here for it though? - or do we bring in the big fighters from across the pond?

We have managed to lure Glen Johnson and In-Jin Chi over here to challenge for titles.

We may well have Hatton v Harris soon, and that is without big site fees.

Imagine what could be achieved with an extra million in the kitty from site fees.

allegedly has proven if nothing else, that fighters are WILLING to come and fight Hatton. Hatton is of course a rarity

I really do think that the casino set up could really inject some life into our boxing scene; more glitz, more glamour, more big venues, more crowds.

The thing is that in Vegas, they can attract a big crowd of casual fans to enter the arena of a hotel complex, we don't have that ability here. The only peoplpe who generally attend are hard core boxing fans, and there aren't many of those. I am sure that new fans are made this way, if you go to Vegas for a weekend, and take in a fight as part of the fun, you may just come away a boxing fan, in the same way as some of us have turned our mates on to the sport with a big contest at home on the box.

It can only be a positive thing surely if we get the big casino environments to stage our events in?

Excuse my ignorance, but are the casino's going to pay a fat site fee to the promoter and then let him keep the gate on top?

I can see how they would pay a site fee up front, and use it to attract paying customers. I can even see how the casinos might pay fees and let the promoters keep the gate in Vegas, where there is so much competition. Over here though we don't have any (soon to be one, possibly) casinos with decent sized arenas. We don't really have many decent sized arenas full stop. Why would this casino pay site fees and forego the gate when they could be earning money, either through gate revenue or hiring their hall? Who would they be trying to outdo? :-?
