Miami's Joey Hernandez continued his knockout streak Friday night.
Hernandez barely broke a sweat with a first-round technical knockout over Dillet Frederick in the main event of a card at the Airport Doubletree Hotel.
''I was prepared to go 10 rounds so I was moving and I saw everything he had,'' Hernandez said. ``I then saw an opening and I landed a good shot to the head and that was it.''
Hernandez's punch dropped Frederick (6-3-3) into the ropes. A dazed Frederick reached his feet at the count of nine but referee Jorge Ortiz spared him from additional harm and stopped the fight at 2:34 of the round.
Hernandez, who has stopped his last five opponents, is now 15-0 with eight knockouts.
Earlier, Jessy Cruz promised fans they would see a different fighter from last year when he made his 2009 debut against Anthony Fraguagada. The former state amateur champion and Cutler Bay resident delivered on his word with a third-round technical knockout victory.
''This feels great,'' said Cruz, who was 2-2 in 2008. ``I've been holding this frustration inside me for too long.''
Cruz, who scored his first professional knockout, stressed aggression in his efforts at overcoming his disappointing early record. Against Fraguagda, of Newark, N.J., Cruz stepped up his attack with four knockdowns.
Cruz connected with a right uppercut and left to the head, which floored Fraguagda in the second round for the bout's first knockdown.
In the next round, Cruz kept Fraguagda on the defensive, dropping him a second time with a left-right combination to the head. Fraguagda reached his feet but Cruz immediately answered with left to the head, sending him to the canvas again.
Sensing the finish, Cruz never allowed Fraguagda (0-2) to shake off the knockdown's effects and dropped him for the fourth time with a left to the head. Referee Jorge Ortiz waved the 10-count following the round's third knockdown and stopped the super-bantamweight fight at 2:14.
''I always had confidence in my ability, I was one of the best amateurs here,'' Cruz said. ``Hopefully a win like this brings me back in the game.''
In another bout, middleweight and Miami resident Eli Augustama knocked out Torrance King in the first round. Augustama and King were at close range late in the round, when Augustama landed a timely-placed left hook to the body.
King grimaced, fell to the canvas and failed to beat referee Sam Burgos' 10-count, ending the bout at 2:48.
In other bouts: heavyweight Carl Davis knocked out Moise Droz at 2:28 of the fifth round; super-middleweight Michael Oliveira won by majority decision over Vladimir Laguna; junior-middleweight Jonathan Suarez won by unanimous decision over Jose Roman; junior-lightweight Christopher Rudd won by unanimous decision over Antoine Brodnick; middleweight Wilkey Campfort scored a TKO over Spencer Harsley when Harsley failed to answer the bell for the second round.

Also Joey Hernandez's fight was no longer a title fight and was scheduled for 10 rounds. His opponent was not approved as a quality opponent for the belt..The fight took place at Welterweight

Can we get Joey ranked at Welterweight instead of Light Middleweight also. His fight this weekend was at welterweight and he is ranked as a welterweight by the WBC.
