Prizefighter...needs a re-think

Post by rhino222 »

i was disappointed this evening with the prizefighter competition. most of the contestants could not punch the skin off a preverbial rice pudding, i think the tournament should be a decent mix of experience, youth, punchers, stylist, unbeaten etc..... tonight really had not much of this.

the 'cuts' rule also needs re-thinking, surely a top-eye lid cut should mean the end of the tournament for a fighter. what is the point of having reserves if they are not going to be used even in the event of fairly bad top eye lid cuts?

the reserves need to be re thought too, surely one of them should not come into the competition 'cold' with the potential to be in the final. i think they should use the punch stats more and if a fighter has to be withdrawn due to injury then the highest punching loser should step into the frame again, or even count the KD's, or offer financial incentive for KD's.

all in all a poor nights entertainment, with too much confusement.

does anyone else think things need a bit of a re-think, especially as far as cuts and reserves are concerned?

I thought prizefighter was great for the first 2 shows but when the WW one came I found it very boring and very long. I don't think it will be around for much longer

I didn't realise there was one on tonight. So far my favourite has been the first one, thanks to Rogan and Dolan. I agree that there should be incentives (for knock downs, knock outs, fight of the night). One of the most important aspects of the tournament is big punchers. I want to see knock outs. :box:

Didn't see tonights but have been to one of them I thought at the time it was unfair to have the potential of a reserve comming in at the final not having fought but thougt as they have two they should have them fight one another so they are at least one fight in. The fans wouldn't mind another fight.

great call, and this would give the public extra entertainment, and give the 2 finalists an extra 20 mins to get ready for the final. shit , i like that idea.....barry hearn, listen, we are here, we will do your job for you !!!!!!

The biggest thing is you have to have bangers the idea was for prizefighter to be exciting so makes sence to load it up with bangers chinny or not.

Any idea who is in the cruisers?

Dolan
Keeton
Francis
Simpson
Steeds
Corbett
Krence
Ling

Probably asking a bit too much for francis to be in it same reason why i aint mentioned hide, who would be brilliant for this. Dunstan has a fight in the past year and he has bloody good wack on him but 40 may be a bit too old. Saying that corbett is bloody accient as well.

I just want them to be less frequent. I was concerned that they would take over the schedule from "normal" boxing, and whilst you might see todays as an "extra" one (considering there is boxing on Friday) - there is always a few times in the year Sky will have a Tuesday show... sometimes, in the good days, delayed action from the states.

True didnt really think of that and it does seem like its about 1 every other month. Proabably would be better to make it every 4 months but prizefighter is better than no boxing

This might sound crazy but I think one of the grate things about prize fighter is for fighters like Oakey is it is career rehabilitation in a night, your coming off a bad loss and you notch up three wins in front of a large TV audience and get some good hard rounds with different styles under your belt which will do no end for your confidence and the loss only count half because people can make excuses for you (freak show, short rounds etc)

If I was Enzo Mac/Audley Harrison et al I'd give it some serious thought.

I thought the best two were the 1st one - Rogan, and the MW's, excellent scraps in that

because thats what Prizefighter is about isnt it? all-action 3 rounders, let it all hang out because you havent got long to impress anyone, better to be a banger than a slow starter.

I'd like to see it as an elim for a shot at the British or something, that would be cool. the money is good for the fighter but a shot at the British title gives it an impetus for the fans i reckon.

I agree with the consensus that Prizefighter line ups should be smattered with exciting bangers - the Martin Conceptions and Cello Rendas of this world.

In this abridged, 'short form' of the sport, much like 20/20 cricket where fans want to see the big hitters like Flintoff and Petersen, Prizefighter fans want to see some slam, bang action.

The next Prizefighter heavyweight tournament should look a little something like this:

:TU:

and the Welters a little something like this:

I love the format and have no problem with the frequency of it. Have to say the LW version was lacking in name recognition, though. That, I feel, is more important than loading a card with bangers. As Rhino said, the best formula is to get a good mix of styles and experience levels in there. The first two were perfect in this regard.

I am hopeful that the Prizefighter series can alter manager's and promoter's perceptions regarding unbeaten records and matching prospects at early stages of their careers. Losing in Prizefighter does not mean the end of the road for these lads and it also shows that learning fights dont just have to be against the same old reluctant journeymen.

If Prizefighter means we see more good quality fights made for area, national and British titles where previously the opportunities have been missed (that light middle farce of a few years back springs to mind) then it will have helped the sport long term as well as giving it a short term shot in the arm (scuse the pun).

I thought Dunstan was in there. I'd make him a good outside bet if he is in it. He was a class operator in his day, and although he's getting on - he's not got a lot of miles on the clock.

What I don't understand is why Reid, a come forward brawler was in the reserves.

Is it just me, or does anyone think this was more a showcase for Tommy Gilmore and his boys than anything else?

Anyone know what happens in the event of a drawn fight in Prizefighter?

I was thinking it could easily happen. Fighter A scores a knockdown in Round 1 but Fighter B wins the next 2 rounds 10-9 and voila you have your draw.

If memory serves this nearly happened in the first final between Rogan and Dolan until Dolan (who had won the 2nd after being knocked down in the opener) got hurt again in the 3rd.

Originally a Prizefighter sceptic, they have grown on me, but this latest one (Lightweights) was poor, the worse yet IMO. How Brawley won is beyond me. Dave Parris is a fornicating shit referee. Brawley repeatedly held against Murphy and should have had points docked, and Holborn beat him clearly enough for me.

The cuts issue needs to be addressed quickly. Everyone with half a brain could see that McArthur wasn't going to last long. I know it's disappointing to see a guy lose out by a cut, but that's what the wildcards are there for.

Actually, Gary Reid and Damian Owen would have both made better participants than Burke or Brawley who, frankly, didn't add excitement.

Yes. This was a piss poor show which didn't fulfill the remit that prizefighter set out to deliver - it was meant to be a showcase for lesser known fighters, up and comers, old stagers and dangerous bangers, to bring together disparate styles to produce exciting and unpredictable results.

This didn't deliver on any level and the fights were just poor and dull.
