As usual the West MI GG had a lot of entries. Over 150 boxers entered the tournament. This includes the Open, Novice, Sub-Novice, Junior, Masters, and Female boxers. We only had 1 Masters boxer enter. He won't be competing. We do have a couple of female bouts scheduled.

The venue was packed, probably 2,000+ fans in attendance. The next round of competition for the West MI GG tourney is Wednesday, March 25, 2009.

There were 8 junior bouts, 14 novice bouts, and 7 open bouts.

Partial results for the W MI GG semi-finals:
Open class:
141: Johnny Garcia d. Brian McKinney - pts.
152: Nick Klein d. Antonio Urista - pts.
152: William Johnson d. Elijah Hoffert - pts.
165: Kurt Berry d. Michael Mosley, MLK - pts.
165: DeAnthony Walker-Hadley vs. Travis Bussell, Manistee - ????
165: Brandon Larvadain, Crown d. Germaine McKinney, MLK - pts.
165: Niall Shimmell, MGGA d. Mark Bailey, Hoose's - RSC-1
178: Antwon Herdon vs. Dan Glaspie, Hoose's - ????
178: Jarvis Edwards d. D'Qwan Harper, Rosario's - pts.
201: Rafael Hinton, Big House d. Travis McMillan - pts.
201: Jordan Shimmell, MGGA d. Brian Banducci, Crown - walkover
201+: Dave Mbah, unattached d. Ryan Bolen, MGGA - walkover
201+: Kyle McNutt, Rosario's d. Ryan O'Neal, MGGA - pts

Urista had defeated the 2007 NGG semi-finalist Barnes and then loses a close bout to Klein. Too bad this one wasn't in the W MI finals as the potential for a rematch in the State finals would be exciting. My son Niall looked great. His opponent had stopped his guy on Saturday, while Niall's opponent failed to show up for his physical. Last night Niall showed his skills. My other son, Jordan, had an opponent who also failed to show last night. I hope Hinton shows on Saturday.

Unfortunately, a second NGG semi-finalist, Ryan O'Neal, is out of the tourney as he lost a close bout last night.

Yes I do. I have the tentative bout schedule. It is easy to figure out. Start with the Sub-novice bouts and go from lightest to heaviest weight classes. Then do the same thing for the novice class and finally the open class. The female novice bouts are #8 and #10. Just remember it could change if someone doesn't show for weigh-ins. Currently there are 25 bouts scheduled.

I wasn't there so I can't say how Pinkie looked. I've heard from other people that they thought Pinkie lost. The fans booed him when he boxed out of his previous gyms, including both MGGA and MLK (Grand Rapids gyms).

OK, I watched the Pinkie vs. Urista bout on video. From that camera angle, I had Antonio winning by a total of 7 points. The first 2 rounds were 2 minute rounds, but the 3rd round was just over 3 minutes. It didn't really seem to help Pinkie to have the longer round.

Garza won, martinez seemed to tire out, and got his head rocked a few times. There was no second guessing this time about who won. but he and martinez are going to state in different weight classes.

He got hit with a couple good shots in the first round, I would not say he got rocked. Garcia dominated the fight and it was a good stop by the corner.

It was very appropriate for the corner to throw in the towel in White's bout against Johnny Garcia. White is good, but he just wasn't ready for Johnny's endless pressure. Johnny deserved the Most Outstanding Boxer of the West MI GG tournament award. However, I do think the trophy should be presented after the last bout. Yes, Kyle didn't look spectacular against Ryan O'Neal so he probably wasn't going to win it, but at least wait and see. What if he had looked amazing on Saturday? Just my 2 cents.

Pinkie clowns too much and got hit with obvious scoring blows when his hands were down. If he would keep his hands up and use his jab more, he could score more and keep his opponents score down. It is simple.

A coach told a boxer that he had the answer to all of his problems. "Just don't get tired." Amazing! Now there isn't any need to go to the gym anymore.
