Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
I've nominated Nate Campbell, Junior Witter, Winky, Williams and Margarito.
But the list was VERY hastily compiled.

Coo eck, great shout.
Re: Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
I`m not so convinced that Junior Witter was truly `Most Avoided` ... of course the myth has built up he was, but he was given a shout against Zab Judah who was pretty hot news back then ... and he pulled out against Kelson Pinto.
Sure Hatton has made it clear he doesn`t want to give him a pay day .. not too sure being avoided by one guy really makes him `Most Avoided`??
mathew barney .. for various reason that usually apply to most awkward types that get the label :(

Johnny Nelson waas avoided a lot whilst still world champion.
On a side ntoe, the most prominent boxer of the past 10 years who has avoided the top boxers is Antony Mundine.A huge mouth, but can't be that confident in himself as he takes on soft touches.Last time out he boxed Shannon taylor, a career welterweight who got ko'd in 3 by Mosley.

Of course Junior has been avoided - when he was WBC champion, he still could'nt get a lot of people in the ring with him. Even Dimitrius Hopkijns turned down a fight with him -imagine turning down a WBC title shot?
Re: kelson pinto. He genuingly injured his hand and was forced to pull out & was gutted to do so.

Slightly straying ,but talking of a fighter of today that is being avoided ,has clottey got a fight or anything in the works?
Re: Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
Cotto was being lined up but that seems to have fallen through.metropol wrote:Slightly straying ,but talking of a fighter of today that is being avoided ,has clottey got a fight or anything in the works?

Glen Johnson must be up there. Although much of his hard luck story might be a fragment of my imagination based on some squiffy decisions.
Juan Manuel Marquez must have wondered when the big time would come, and it took his fight against Paquiao to really make it happen.
Personally, though, I see Wright, Margarito and Williams as being the main three. Williams getting Wright and a 154lb title shot in two fights is not the end of his journey: Bottom line, the 147lb royalty of Cotto, Mosley and Mayweather should be fighting him, but wouldn't get anywher close to him if they had a suit of armour and a mace.

Remember, no one wanted to fight Witter for the British hence the lonsdale belt being given to him.
Hatton ducked him all his life.
Hopkins RAN like a dog.
There are others.
Re: Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
Witter being avoided is definitely true.
But he kind of shot his bolt a bit all on his own.. His momentum before the Bradley fight was really gathering pace and then he got put down heavy and lost on home soil in front of millions of tv viewers.
I feel a bit sorry for him actually, as he can put it together when he has to. I was ringside for the Vivian Harris fight and Witter was terrific.
But his timing has always been unfortunate for him. For example :-
Junior was stinking the shop out against Andriy Kotelnik the month after..
..Hatton stopped P4P Kostya Tszyu in front of 25,000 on Sky Box Office.

Re: Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
Definitely Winky Wright for me. If it wasn't for Shane Mosley giving Wright a shot then i think Winky would have still been trawling on undercards for the last few years.
His precise destruction of Trinidad is one of the most complete performances i have ever witnessed.

Re: Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
Winky Wright has to be #1, Paul Williams #2, and #3 could be JMM or Margarito before they got the Pacman and Cotto fights.
Re: Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
Winky Wright priced himself out of loads of fights, if you believe the rumours.
Re: Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
I don't think Witter was avoided because top fighters were afraid of him, I think he was avoided because even with his success he still wasn't a household name even in his own household.

MOst avoided fighter? Definitely Tommy Morrison. No one wants to fight him. Would you?
Re: Most avoided fighter of the past 10 years?
Calzaghe himself was pretty avoided in his prime.
