Kevin Mitchell update
Kevin Mitchell update
Kevin Mitchell hopes to fight Roman Martinez for the WBO.world title and then honour his word and defend the title against Steven Foster. The hand injury he sustained many years ago which required surgery "ie a snapped tendon" has been a success and he has been back in trainning for the last couple of months. These could be exciting times for mighty mitchell and dont be against him becoming world champ in 09.

Re: Kevin Mitchell update
agree. its there for the taking. like to see it at the 02 im sure it will sell alot of tickets
Re: Kevin Mitchell update
The WBO are a joke if this take places. At least with the WBC, WBA and IBF Mitchell wouldnt get a shot at their titles in such a manner.
He scrapped past Carl Johansson in a decent fight, with a tough-hearted display that impressed me - but certainly it was not a world class performance.
I rate the lad but he's done nothing since the Johansson fight and suddenly he's racing through the back-door to a 'world' title shot. For the sake of preparing properly for a world title shot, not to mention doing something towards actually earning such a shot surely the lad has gotta face-off against the winner of Ricky Burns & Gomez?
But good luck to the lad on the injury front.

What are you talking about? In what manner is he getting a shot at the WBO title?liamlion wrote:The WBO are a joke if this take places. At least with the WBC, WBA and IBF Mitchell wouldnt get a shot at their titles in such a manner.
Mitchell is ranked in the top 15 by the WBC, IBF and WBO. He can be a voluntary defence for any of their champions.
I fail to see how Kevin Mitchell getting a shot at the WBO title makes the WBO a joke.

Always enjoy witching Kevin fight - he goes about it the right way. Dont know if he has the talent to be a proper, established world champ but in reality few have. Will be good to see him back from injury soon.
Re: Kevin Mitchell update
...being part of Sports Network's efforts to keep the WBO title within their stable at all costs... Alex Arthur literally picked up the title, then Nicky Cook gets bombed out and then suddenly Mitchell jumps straight to the front of the queue to meet Roman Martinez!! How is that justified??... Mitchell hasnt even established himself as the best super-featherweight in Britain at domestic level (he hasnt yet defended his British title).Horse wrote:What are you talking about? But my point being...do you honestly think Mitchell will fight for the WBC or IBF titles? Will he bollox, because those governing bodies cant be manipulated by Fwank the way the WBO is!Horse wrote: Mitchell is ranked in the top 15 by the WBC, IBF and WBO. The lad hasnt fought since June 2008! His last performance against Estrada was poor. Before that Mitchell struggled big-time at British title level with Carl Johanneson and before that he fought against Edison Torres (and dont remind me of that one, because I was there!). Essentially, the lad has no recent form to be warranting a challenge for a world title... but then thats no surprise to fight fans in the UK, to be fair we've seen plenty enough of WBO fights to know that there is little justification in their sanctioning.Horse wrote: I fail to see how Kevin Mitchell getting a shot at the WBO title makes the WBO a joke.

Was not a fan to start with...But he is good little fighter!

Re: Kevin Mitchell update
I too am a fan. I just think that this is the scurge of british boxing...hot young talent, bypassing tough domestic rivals and taking an easier route to a second-rate world title.
Mitchell should be calling out Ricky Burns and the like. Tough fights against your domestic rivals on the way-up can really setup a fighter to go onto bigger and better things. Its part of the boxing education surely?

Re: Kevin Mitchell update
Why fight Burns at British/Commonwealth level when he can defend the WBO title against him for more money.liamlion wrote:Mitchell should be calling out Ricky Burns and the like. The WBO is not wrong to have Mitchell in the top 15. If Martinez and his promoters agree to make a voluntary defence against Mitchell, then how does that make a joke of the WBO?
Even if Mitchell was made the WBO mandatory, that would be far less pathetic then making Jennings and Lockett mandatories.
Re: Kevin Mitchell update
Because the reality is that its not a genuine world title fight, despite what is written on the tin. To sell the fight as anything else is nothing short of attempting to defraud the general public, a trick that has been exploited to the enth degree by sports network - hence one of the reasons why they attract so much criticism on such boards as these. Surely enough is enough of this shit - its a solid british & commonwealth title level showdown with the winner to go onto bigger and better things. Lets not delude ourselves that its anything more, regardless of whether or not the fight poster has the letters 'WBO' printed on it.Horse wrote:Why fight Burns at British/Commonwealth level when he can defend the WBO title against him for more moneyliamlion wrote:Mitchell should be calling out Ricky Burns and the like. Per se, it doesnt. However if the WBO enforce the fight on Martinez then I think we know the answer. I suspect this is what may happen.Horse wrote: The WBO is not wrong to have Mitchell in the top 15. I was actually going to refer to Jennings and Lockett as examples of WBO sanctioning at its finest. Regardless of this however, such examples would not in anyway justify Mitchell being mandated for a shot at the title. The old adage comes to mind... two wrongs dont make a rightHorse wrote: Even if Mitchell was made the WBO mandatory, that would be far less pathetic then making Jennings and Lockett mandatories
