Worst ever World champ?

Post by Cannibal »

This was a question posed on Bunce's show. Hatton said Witter  Froch said Calzaghe  Khan said Kotelnik

Kotelnik is a weak champion but far, far from the worst of all time and probably only got name dropped cause Khan wants his title, but that is REALLY bad promotion. Do you really want your fan base knowing that you are targeting a guy because he is one of the weakest world champions around and would be the easiest route to a title? Doesn't say a lot if you beat the "worst champion of all time" to become a champion yourself if that's how it's promoted.

Anyway, back to the point. Who do people here think is the worst? In recent times it would probably be Carlos Maussa, but I'd have to do further research to determine the ultimate worst.

What was the criteria... big 3 or big 4, or any definition of champion?

Paul Weir, the guy who "beat" Norris, Eric Aiken, Michael Bent, Alejandro Berrio, Carlos Maussa, to name a few in recent times.

I think it was big 4, but it is hard to tell as any pro they asked didn't give a serious thought out answer.

Yeah, I think he was joking about. He said he's the worst world champion "cause he won't fight me"

Wouldn't M'Baye be worse for losing to him?

M'Baye wasn't much cop really though was he? He won a title that Hatton vacated and was lucky(IMO) to hang onto it against Kotelnik and then he lost straight after that to Rees. But I still stand by Santana as my pick seeing how he "won" and "defended" his title against Norris and for certain I haven't seen a worse fighter to hold a "major" title in my lifetime.

Has to be Alex Arthur, was given the world title by fwank without throwing a punch, then lost it in his first defence to nicky cook, who then lost it in his very next fight to a unknown fighter.

They didn't even have a proper belt when he won it in Bolton. They had a WBO version with WBA taped over the front.

I wish I was making that up.

Alex Arthur - he got given his title without fighting Guzman and then loses against a guy who has moved up in weight, and who has subsequently been knocked out in his first defence.

Will we be able to add Khan to that list, once he's won his probably vacant title - whichever organisation it is with - and then loses it by KO?
