Calzaghe ?

Post by Exile »

Doe's anyone know what the hell is going on with Joe at the moment, has there been any developments in regards to his next fight now it seems that the Johnson fight has gone for good? Will he continue to defend his SM belt against bums or is there still plans for him to move up against anyone dangerous.

I thought he was meant to be fighting this month but it has all gone a bit quiet since the Jones - Johnson match was announced. Are we going to see another Calzaghe vs TBA :x

Sounds like it's back to 168lbs for Joe I'm afraid.

Maybe its time for Joe to pull a Hatton and demand a half decent challenge. In my opinion he has the talent to make his mark in the light heavy division with some potential money spinning matches out there. He has to forget about a record that nobody cares about due to the quality of the punchbags he's been beating on, the only interesting Super middle matches at the moment are either a rematch with Reid or fight with Lacy.

Joe needs a big fight soon before he ends up stale in my opinion.

I agree with you 100% mate.

Joe is in his prime (or maybe just about to pass it maybe?) He has the class and ability to mix with the very best at 175lbs. The only fight that interests me at 168lbs for Joe is against Lacy.

He says he wants to drop back down and break Eubank's British record of 14 'world' title defences (he and Eubank are currently on 14 WBO title defences each). Then he claims he wants to challenge for a genuine light-heavyweight title.
My guess is he'll stay at super-middleweight till he retires.

That would be a great shame IMO.

I thought Joe said recently that it was getting very hard for him to make 168lbs?

It would be sad for a talented fighter like Joe to lose to an average fighter because of weight problems.

FW site
allegedly has announced that he has opened negotiations with WBC light-heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver in a bid to secure a showdown with Joe Calzaghe.

WBO super-middleweight king Calzaghe was due to fight Glencoffe Johnson this summer for the IBF light-heavyweight title.

But when Calzaghe pulled out with a bad back, it looked as if his dreams of becoming a two-weight world champion were on hold.

He has spoken this week of campaigning again at super-middleweight - but may not need to if Warren can make the Tarver deal.

"I'm confident that progress will be made," said Warren today.

Tarver, 35, is 22-2 after sensationally defeating Roy Jones Junior earlier this year.

Calzaghe, four years younger than the American, is 37-0.

If allegedly can pull off both Hatton and Calzaghe in big title fights this year than fair play to him, looks like he's listening to the fans (or his fighters :D )

A Tarver vs Calzaghe match would be mouthwatering and just the type of fight Joe needs. I reckon Joe would have to go to the USA for this to come off as Tarver would cost Mega $$$$ to go to Wales.

A fight with Tarver would be the ideal fight for Joe now, the time is right for this one. I've always thought Joe stood a very real chance of beating Tarver, if he can avoid being hit with Tarver's money punch. Tarver knows who Calzaghe is, and is keen on the fight. Unfortunately Tarver is big bucks at the moment, which may be hard for Warren to deal with. I think it will be back down to super-middleweight WBO level.

If he wants to break the Eubank record it's all set-up perfectly for him with a Veit rematch. It's interesting but impossible to guage whether Calzaghe would have made 14 defences of a genuine world title. My gut feeling is that he would not. We'll never know.

To be honest, I'm not sure that Calzaghe is at his peak just now. I still think he can pull off a defining fight, but I think he's now in the twilight of his peak years.

How will Calzaghe be remembered? The public at large will forget about him soon (if they even knew who he was), boxing fans will always remember him as an ideal 'what could've been' example in reference to other up and coming fighters. Perhaps his greatest contribution to the sport will be to serve as a benchmark for young British boxers coming through who have real desire to win genuine world titles and compete at the highest level.

The phrase "don't go the way of Joe Calzaghe" may well be ringing in their heads.

I'm betting on Calzaghe v Mundine. Just an instinct.

Not a chance in hell . Mundine would'nt get in the ring with Joe for any amount off money.

Now Joe and Green theres a mouth watering fight, or at light heavy Joe and briggs , Briggs can whack but his chin is questionable at the elite level.

Green to walk through Calagzie , Calagzie to stop Briggs.

How is Greens stamina?? I heard he had big problems with super tough Sean Sullivan... didnt he basically get tired beating up Sullivan??

What like Johnson for the IBF LH Crown?

In my opinion, Hatton has earned the right to make such demands.
Whether or not the back injury was genuine, Joe's recent behaviour has been a joke. Perhaps he should start acting like a professional sportsman first.

I'm starting to feel that although Hatton and Calzaghe get compared quite often, they are very different creatures. Perhaps not by virtue of where they have been, but certainly by virtue of where they are going.

Just to temper this a little. It does appear that Joe is in a bit of a state judging by recent reports, he is obviously more than a little distracted from boxing, and is going through a messy sounding divorce. I can forgive him if he isn't in the right frame of mind right now, but he may have missed his best chance.

I don't see Tarver focussing on Joe, he has a potential third fight with Jones Jr, and is already talking about a contest with Jirov or Toney at heavyweight.

To be fair Joe had a 'half decent challenge' scheduled last month and did his utmost to completely cock it up.

It's a shame really cause is Eubanks Title defence record something highly thought of in the UK, nevermind overseas?

No offence to Eubank the fighter but statistics as we all know can be very misleading.

I hope Joe can find a better goal to reach for, and soon.

If i was Calzaghe i would stay away from both Green and Briggs at either weight, both have massive right hands and Calzaghe has a weakness for taking that particular punch. I doubt Calzaghe is majorly bothered about a big fight, he strikes me more of a "take the money and run" sort of character, out on the town with girls living as a celebrity of sorts in Wales. I doubt he really is that bothered, to the none boxing public 15 consecutive "world" title defenses sounds impressive enough anyway, let's face it if he was so bothered about getting that career defining fight then he would spoken out like Hatton did or gone to America with a different promoter.

The Super Middleweight division isn't as weak as people make out anyway, there are some fights left out there for him. Danny Green would probably travel over but he would probably be a big risk with his power and if Calzaghe won he lacks the big name status to make the risk worthwhile. Mundine is a viable option but he makes loads of money and would want mega bucks to travel to Britian and fight, he is a really talented fighter with natural ability but lacks punch resistance which will always hold him back...Jeff Lacy would be a great fight but Calzaghe would need to trvel to America and it's obvious to me he will not do that.

I don't know if Green is that big a risk, I think Calzaghe is a far better technician and would find him and hurt him. Calzaghe is an underrated boxer, and Green is still pretty, well, green. He seems to punch himself out at times, and gets reckless.

I don't even know why you guys bother talking about Slappy, I won't go so fa as to call him a coward because he gets bashed in the chops for a living and I don't, but in boxer terms he's definately not ambitious. The Tarver talk is just talk, Slappy has never fought anyone and I doubt he ever will. Everyone rips the piss out of Ottke while Calz is exactly the same, but Brit fans still give it the old "well he'd beat so and so if they fought" bullshit. He's an also ran, and to me quite uninteresting, a waste of talent blah de blah

Whilst i agree with most of this post i've got a little issue with a couple of the points.

Calzaghe has fought some reasonable opponents, admittedly those fights were interspersed with the Pudwills and McIntyres of this world, so to say he's fought noone is a little harsh. I'd settle for saying, he's very rarely fought anyone at his level of ability.

I also wouldn't bracket him with Ottke. Calzaghe has clearly become content with staying in this country and fighting in front of his home fans, but the difference is he's never needed the officials to give him the wins. Comparing him with Ottke is again a little harsh.

The sentiment of the post is spot on though, he's become very unambitious and a less than great fighter to follow. To me it looks like he's made a decent amount of money and he's happy with that. I can't really blame him, but he's let his boxing prime slip by and he doesn't come across as particularly bothered.

Boy will there be some crow eaten on this site if Tarver and Harris both come off.

I shall go straight to Mr Fearnley-Whittingsall's book for some recipes for you!
