Incidentally, if Barrera thought he had little chance of catching Khan then I’m sure a guy of his experience would have asked the ref to stop it because of the cut .. he was asked a few times

Barrera - like any Khan opponent, will have known to expect a quick flailing attack for the 1st 4-5rnds that looks good from the back of the hall, but actually is missing more than actually getting through .. and has has been repeated by quite a few opponents now .. Khan doesn`t carry much power when he does get through.
I really believe that Barrera had every confidence of catching Khan and stopping him .. sadly the cut was too deep and too early.
You can't ask the referee to stop it - it doesn't work that way. If you tell the ref that you don't want to carry on, then it would be a TKO, the ref has to stop it under direction from the doctor - or can stop it himself if he feels he doesn't need the doctors advice.

Barrera seemed to indicate to me pretty clearly to the doctor that he couldn't see, he was pointing to his eye and shaking his head repeatedly when the doc came over - so quite why the doctor didn't think 'hmmm, this guy is saying he cannot see, it's a terrible wound, and it's not getting any better I think this needs to be stopped.'

Quite why he didn't, we can only speculate - I'm not one for conspiracy theories personally, but I think it was a bad call by the doctor which I think has unfairly tainted Barrera resume, though not by a great deal.

Personally, I hope if he is to continue that he gets it reversed, gets one last shot at a lightweight title, and then promptly retires - win or lose.l

WHY? Yes, it was an accident cut, but people seem to have turned this on it's head. Had Barrera lost a world title on that cut then yeah, I can see why there would have been so much fuss.

People seem remarkably keen to "forget" that this WAS NOT A WORLD TITLE FIGHT! Under British rules (which, really, it should have been, as it wasn't for a meaningful title) he would have lost that fight due to his injury.

It was only because it was for some totally pointless "international" title that going to scorecards was an issue.

But when Murray suffered a similar fate to Barrera, the Brits were shouting what a travesty it would have been if he would have lost his undefeated record - thank god the WBC youth title was on the line.

Now the cut has fallen on the non Brit - its a different opinion and they should stick to the BBBoC rules.

Of couse, but if Barrera had wanted to he could have indicated - more strongly - to the ref and doctor when asked, and to his own corner - how could any ref have given the benefit of doubt then? it was always going to be a stoppage due to the cut, no way would it ever have been a retirement or tko with such an obvious cut - and one that had already been called.

He's a fighter at the end of the day. He was saying that he couldn't see, isn't that a hint enough!!!! He is a proud champion, he simply isn't going to say "I cannot continue" and there is still a fine line between the doctor/ref stopping it on a technicality, or MAB "quitting" (which would be a TKO victory). Marco would have fought on with no arms if necessary - he's a champion.

However, fact is - that cut was no worst in the 5th than it was in the 4th, so why stop it then? Answer... well we all know the answer.

It should have been stopped and declared a N/C. It was an accident, but a huge bit of luck for Khan who was gifted the decision. The stoppage in round 5 showed how Khan gets favours and chances other fighterts dont. When he he was dropped by Prescott the first time the ref should have stopped the fight but because it was Khan he was given the chance to recover. This sort of thing doesnt help people to like and support Khan and I give him no credit at all for getting the decision over Barrera. I think it would be fair if a rematch was to be made but I think its very unlikely. Has Khan impoved? difficut to say as he was hunting down a badly injured lion. To me the way he brought his hands up looked very mechanical, as if he was suddenly remembering the words of Freddy Roach, which for a few moments he had forgotten. They can protect Khan as much as they like but the elite will show Khan his level. Is Khan good enough for a British or Euro title? I think he may be, but World, NO.

Yes, it probably should have been stopped a round or 2 before the 5th.

Yes, it probably should have been a no contest.

If Khan hadn't have been the home fighter, or Warren's flagship fighter, those outcomes would probably have played out.

The reason I'm not feeling the outrage is because it was a one sided battering from the 1st bell, MAB's obviously not got much left. He wasn't able to do a thing with Khan, getting outsped and lit up for his trouble, consistently.

I feel a little bad about a legend of the ring taking more punishment that he should have had to endure, but you could also look at those extra rounds as an opportunity to go for broke.

If MAB was having any success, I'd definitely have had more of a problem with the stoppage. He wasn't though, he was out of his depth, bigtime. Another reason I dont feel outraged is because any kind of recompense would lkely invlove a rematch and MAB definitely doesn't need the kind of beating he would end up taking.

I'm one of those who picked MAB to KO Khan, if so many of you feel this was an injustice, I should feel the same way, but I just dont. Khan's on the way up and MAB's more than on the way down, he's done, completely done. It happened and it sucks, but there's no reason to hoist it up in the air and scream 'travesty', it's just not worth it.

And to whoever it was that said the fight would definitely have gone the full 12, you're having a laugh, surely??

Don't see how anyone can say this, yes it was a one sided battering, but only because Barrera could not see Kahn's punches coming.
Kahn could not hurt Barrera even thoe he was half blind we need a rematch

I admit Barrera did not have it easy with the cut, but "robbed" ? Come on now..

There have been plenty of other boxers who have been cut just as bad, and have been able to hold their own and do what enough to go the distance even.

Barrera was being humiliated in there, and virtually looked lost as it was.

It's over, Khan won, move on.

No Barrera wasn't robbed, Khan wasn't gifted - we simply do not no - King isn't asking for it to be a Barrera win, but a no contest.

I've NEVER seen as bad a cut.

Can anyone imagine the whining if Barrera had been stopped in round one?

We all tuned in or went to the fight, to see Khan tee off at will on an old Barrera.

At least Barrera got a chance to land a half decent left hook in round five.

IF it were the other way round, Khan's team, Warren, the referee, the doctor and everybody and anybody British/English would have made sure the 4 round rule was excersized, I was really surprised it wasn't!

King has a valid case.

No. It should have simply been a non-title fight, sanctioned under British rules, which would have meant Khan won when it was stopped.

The point everyone misses is that this "scorecards decision" thing was only an issue because they tagged some WBA (?) Interwhotsit title onto the bout.

Seriously, you all need to stop buying into the hype. This was NOT a world title bout, and shouldn't have been fought under international rules.

I disagree Whicker, this might not have been a world title fight - but it was a world class fight. Had this fight taken place in the states the 4 round rule would have applied, no matter what title was on the line. This is the type of fight that needs to be sanctioned by a world body and governed by international rules - its as "world" fight, if not a world title fight.

The British rule is silly and needs changing anyway... I agree if a punch causes the problem then Khan should have won no matter when in the fight.... but it wasn't. Barrera has now (unless King wins an appeal) lost his #1 ranking on a technicality. It wasn't even Kevin Mitchell vs some un heard of inport for the WBO intercontinental title, this was a meaningful fight.

When referees and doctors can see a cut so bad and don't stop it untill they KNOW the house fighter is going to get the win , Its ludricous to think that had Barrera asked them too stop it or indicated he did'nt want to go on that they would not off awarded a tko. Another thing Barrera was actually slipping a lot off Khans punches until the cut . who's to say iff he could see what he was doing he would'nt off slipped and landed a big left hook on china chin.

Any waay i could'nt care less who he fights next because this one has definetly elevated him into ppv fights and if they bring puddings people won't buy if they bring someone world class he gets bowled so who cares. the day he has to stand up and be counted is'nt too far away.
