think its time for Gomez to give it up, good fighter in his time but that time has gone. Never looked brilliant since Johanneson loss.

"nice" bit of holding and hitting from Burns which hurt Gomez just before the end.

I know Hagler might pull me up here cos I said his bet of inside 12 rounds might not necessarily be water tight but.....

did anybody else not think when this fight was made Gomez would be up against a huge obstacle? He looked worn against Johanneson, which isn't to say he didn't fight well that night, but you judge somebody's decline by how good they were and how good they are , don't you?

I just thought it was last chance saloon versus Johanneson, last chance saloon versus Khan...and Burns is so much fitter in 2009 than Gomez. How many times are you meant to go to that fckin Saloon? That's my take on it anyway.

I would like to see gomez stop fighting but have a funny feeling he may be back in the ring.
Does anyone else get this feeling?

That round by round was rather biased to gomez, I gave him nothing except a round where Burns got a point docked. Burns out-jabbed him all night and was just the younger, better man on the night. Gomez is shotter than shot, hes come back hes had the extra paydays and that really should be that he gassed massively at the end and just looked like he really had gone to the very bottom of the well.

Burns set up the right hand, which led to the finish, with a forearm to the throat. Boxing turned MMA.

Surely the end for Gomez. He had nothng in that fight, threw a bout 5 punches per round.

Burns is no power puncher, but if he were, with the clean shots that Gomez took, he would have been out of there much earlier.

I`d like to see Gomez call it a daynow, he just does not have it anymore.

Burns v Mitchell would be the obvious choice now? Mitchell to stop him inside 10 rounds.

Burns will get stopped by Mitchell.
Johanneson must come back stronger.
He must get confidence from seeing Burns dominate in this way - having totally dominated Burns.

I was very unimpressed with Burns, he looked petrified to fight on the inside. I know thats not his game, but hes not got much bottle. Really, he shouldve got that version of Gomez out of there within 3 rounds, puncher or not. Kevin Mitchell will eat him.

Mikes old, no legs and cant pull trigger. what a little scrapper hes been tho. Time to call it a day or the BBBC should step in.

Thought ref was very compassionate to the old war horse.

If you look at his career, he gets given many chances:

Following his loss to Peter McDonagh, he fought (and stopped) two decent journeymen. He was then given a British title shot, against Johanneson, which he lost. Following that he had a single fight (against a journeyman) and got a shot against Khan.

He then beat three journeyman fighters, and got this title shot against Burns.

.....

If he is still up for it, it isn't unlikley that he will pick up another couple of wins against journeymen, and be lined up for another title shot.

Yes, it left Gomez completely defenseless to take that shot. Very naughty, completely intentional also.

Gomez is finished, I want to see him pack it out now - but I just don't think he will, and I don't think 2 four round contests will be enough. He likes the big stage so much. I can see "50 fights" becoming "50 wins" etc etc. Maybe for his 50th fight, maybe he can go for a Celtic/Irish/English title (whatever he is eligable for) and that might be a fitting end.

Gomez has been honest in post fight interviews in the past, remembering the one Spencer Fearon did after the Khan fight. I just hope he doesn't start to say "he's back" in future fights. It left a bit of a bad taste for me when he was declaring that he knew the snap was going a few fights before - why didn't he say this pre fight. Reminded me of Nigel Benn at the end of his career.
