For the fight with Jimmy Ellis February 1970.
Frazier sparred with,

Charlie Polite

Larry Holmes took time of from being Muhammad Ali's sparring partner to become a sparring partner for Joe Frazier for the Ali vrs Frazier rematch in 1974.Frazier paid Holmes $375.00 a week, and expected him to spar with him a day after Frazier fractured one of Holmes ribs, said that it was too close to the fight to be taking a day off.
Also Jimmy Young was a Frazier sparring partner for that fight too.

The Heavyweight who believed in quality sparring and invested more in sparring partners than any other was Wladimir Klitschko.. He would solicit virtually all the top Heavyweights, and had as many as 15 in camp, sparring up to 16 rounds in a day.. Wlad boxed all the present Heavyweight Champions: Joshua, Wilder, and Parker in his camps.. Joshua said he kept his eyes peeled in camp to study everything Klitschko did..

AJ also believes in sparring many opponents for a tremendous # of rounds.. Makes sense, cuz It's the nearest training to actually fighting somebody.. However, it takes a massive amount of money to hire quality Heavyweights for sparring, fly them in, put them up in style, feed them good, and have them at your beck and call -- so it pays to be the Lineal Heavyweight Champion of the World -- so you can afford it... That's completely lost to Tyson Fury and other lazy louts.

Duane Bobick was actually a sparring partner to Joe Frazier even earlier then that,
when Frazier was in Manilla
preparing to fight Muhammad Ali in October 1975.

It's a different day... with much more elaborate camps that have more amenities for the sparmates..

Instead of 40 bucks a round they might get 10's or even 100's of thousands of dollars if they can handle the work.. If you beat them up you have to pay them.. I remember when getting hit and all beaten up wasn't a big deal.. Get beaten up and floored a couple times where they had to replace you with a fresh sparmate -- just rest up for 24 hours and maybe you'll box better the next day.. Nowadays, if you get drilled they give you a little bonus and send you home.. With all the guys having problems from getting hit too much -- they're not going to keep you there and pound the daylights out of you every day.

I also read somewhere that Joe Frazier had once sparred with Jerry Quarry in around 1966 at the Main Street Gym in Los Angeles,
several years before
they actually fought in the ring..
but I can't rememeber the source.

Frazier DID spar with Quarry and obviously got the better of him.. EVERYBODY knew about it because those stories go from gym to gym... The stories pissed Quarry off to no end.. He took it personally and that's why he fought like he did in their 1st fight.. He wanted more than anything to beat Frazier in a straight up slug-fest -- what's the sense of being Irish if you can't be thick as a brick??? ... Quarry was a strange guy.. He was probably the worst prepared and fought the worst vs the best opponents.. Except for Chuvalo.. That would seem to be an easy fight for him, but he blew it.

His 2 best fights were against Thad Spencer and Ron Lyle.. Maybe because he felt extremely confident of victory.. Against Frazier and Ali he was terrible.
