Sneaky Setanta
Sneaky Setanta
I get Setanta 1 on the monthly subscription which makes big claims to being the home of boxing. First the Hayemaker bill was on their second channel on Saturday and now next week's Holt-Bradley is as well.
Rotters. Sky used to pull this crap as well. I think I'm more inclined to bin them off than shell out for more channels.

Whats your point?
You paid for boxing and got to watch boxing...

Re: Sneaky Setanta
The point is he did not get to watch boxing as it was moved to another one of their channels
Re: Sneaky Setanta
they repeat it the following day and about 300 other times, till you are completely sick of it.
But it pisses me off too.

Re: Sneaky Setanta
in all honesty didnt realise you could just subscribe to the one channel . i get them all and though there was no other option
Re: Sneaky Setanta
How much are you paying a month just for SS1?
Re: Sneaky Setanta
i think freeview customers only get setanta 1. not sure how it works. i get the full package.
the reason setanta give for puting late night fights on setanta 2 is that they can only broadcast on setanta 1 on freeview until 5am i think. and they dont want to be switching channels. most of the us broadcasts go on until after 5 am. i think they switched channels at 5am approx for either calzaghe v jones or hopkins.
maybe they should start doing that more regularly even though its abit of a hassle , at least freeview customers would get to see the late night boxing live. id prefer them to do that and keep freeview customers happy (i understand freeview customers pay a fee as well). the more customers setanta has the better. they are the only tv station who give us foreign fights live regularly. sky have given us about 3 american bills in 7 months (hatton v malinaggi, pacman v de la hoya and moyorga v mosley last september. hatton v pac will make it 4 bills in 8 months.
i know alot of people are threatening to cancel over on the setanta website over this situation so if they could come up with a solution that would suit everyone it would be great. i dont want to see setanta losing subscibers due to this , because without them our boxing coverage (especially foreign action) would be fairly well stuffed. there is some fights that setanta dont show but you dont see sky showing them either. sky had until a couple of days before the marquez v diaz fight to get it and they did not. sky seem to have no interest in american boxing at all unless its hatton or oscar
i guess setanta thought that the scotland v holland match would be more popular for freeview viewers than the boxing. thats the only reason i can see that they put soccer on setanta 1 and boxing on setanta 2.

Re: Sneaky Setanta
Setanta are busy pissing off fans of rugby league too. Lots of RL fans signed up on the promise of three NRL (Aussie) games a week + magazine shows etc. This has subsequently been cut to one game to week and infrequent magazine shows.
Most people look likely to pull the plug on their subscriptions because of it. Wouldn't be surprised to start treating boxing the same way.

Re: Sneaky Setanta
I'll tell you what - if you are an armchair fan of boxing you had better get behind Setanta. Get all their channels.
If you don't, they could very well be gone before you know it and then you're left with a virtual monopoly again.
They are doing a very good job, in my opinion.

Re: Sneaky Setanta
Surely if you are going to buy Setanta, you buy the whole thing. Why pay for just one channel?
Re: Sneaky Setanta
True. I had to buy the whole thing because they have invested quite big on boxing and I was sick of downloading the fights the next day usually failing to avoid the results.forcefraser wrote:Surely if you are going to buy Setanta, you buy the whole thing. Why pay for just one channel?
Regardless, Setanta > Sky Sports
Re: Sneaky Setanta
I gwet Setanta through freeview at £10.99 a month. I've no compulsion to pay a subscription for more entertainment channels because I get enough crap as it is.
Re: Sneaky Setanta
you can only buy the whole thing if you're a cable/satellite subscriber - some people aren't, they only want to pay for what they want to see - boxing.forcefraser wrote:Surely if you are going to buy Setanta, you buy the whole thing. Why pay for just one channel?
At a time when people are saying Setanta are experiencing financial difficulties, I would have thought they would be doing everything within their power to keep all subscribers happy.
By putting this weekends boxing on Setanta 2 (and also the Jennings fight on 2) they are alienating freeviewers. I do understand why the Hayemaker bill was on 2, due to the scotland game (not that I was happy about it).
I don't buy that whole argument that freeview shuts down at 5am, so lets put it on Setanta 2. I'm most boxing fans would be happy to see some live boxing on Setanta 1, even if some of the action did cut off (although the fights are usually finished by then).
I have been umming and arrring for some time as to whether to cancel my subscripton - at the end of the day if I'm paying for something, I want to see some return on it. At the moment Setanta are not delivering - the same goes for the Aussie RL games which are shown live - at 8:30am when freeviwers can't watch anything until 12pm.
I'm going to wait to see if they get the Froch fight, if not I cannot justify paying £132 per year for something that I rarely watch.
Re: Sneaky Setanta
It you have freeview and want setanta its £10.99 a month as it is for Setanta 1
YOU DONT GET ANY OTHER CHANNELS UNLESS YOUR WITH SKY/VIRGIN ETC ETC
So £10.99 FOR ONE CHANNEL - I got Setanta to watch boxing and missed a few fights due to them showing it on SETANTA 2 and not 1.
The final straw when it was the Jennings v Cotto fight when it was only screened on SETANTA 2 - I cancelled my subscription as I only wanted it for the boxing and feel that £10.99 for one channel is more than enough to pay for maybe a couple of events a month.
I was told the following reasons when I spoke to them - "UFC is on that night and its more popular so we cant show it" (the UFC was on at 8pm - Cotto Jennings was some 7 hours later. Then to be told "you can watch the repeats" which defys the whole object of paying for LIVE boxng and stopping up to watch it LIVE.
"we cant show it on setanta 1 because we'd need to change channels after 3am" - they couldnt explain why this was the case with channel 1 and not 2, and also why this was such a massive problem to do as they had done it previously.
I was being treated like a mug and many other SETANTA subscribers have cancelled due to this. So its Setanta shooting themselves in the foot, not people not supporting it

Re: Sneaky Setanta
damn right, if they want the subscribers then they have to do their bit, if they're treating freeviewers like 2nd class citizens then they will vote with their feet.davidas wrote:So its Setanta shooting themselves in the foot, not people not supporting it
I'm not a charity I'm not going to pay for something which I don't feel is good value, Setanta has gone downhill massively in terms of boxing available to freeviewers, many of which feel the same as I do about.
Re: Sneaky Setanta
Sneaky... I got charged 3 times this month.
12.99 for one subscription
15.48 for changing my billing date

Let see what kind of freaking out we would have on here if they pulled out of boxing!
Re: Sneaky Setanta
The point is that the are pulling the old Sky trick of putting fights on subsidiary channels which some subscribers don't have. Setanta don't have to do that. If this happens continually then I and I gather many others will cancel their subscription and then they will be in trouble and their boxing coverage will be stuffed. Even the Bunce show is only shown on Setanta 1 on repeat, so you can't contribute.
It's thus up to Setanta, take the piss and run the risk of alienating punters.

Was it that late? same but i am on a monthy thing with sky and yestersays fight night was on sky sport 2 so i was stuck with test cricket :x
Re: Sneaky Setanta
Why exactly does Setanta 1 have to shut down on Freeview at 3am?
Anyway I can't get cable in my area, and can't really afford to have satellite put in and subscribe to the full setanta package on top of that. So I opted to just buy a Setanta Freeview Box and pay the 10.99 per month for Setanta 1. I only did it for the Boxing because I felt Sky's boxing coverage was pretty crap.
So think about it, 12.99 a month on cable/satellite gets you the full package (is that a total of 9 channels?) and a mere 2 quid less per month gets us freeviewers the one channel. You'd think they'd make some effort to put the best stuff on what is essentially their premium channel (by their maths Setanta 1 is worth 10.99 a month, the other channels are worth 38p each per month!). If the boxing is going to regularly be shoved onto Setanta 2 because of this bizarre 3am shutdown rule for Freeview, then effectively there's no point in me having the Setanta 1. It certainly won't force me to fork out for a Satellite package so I can get access to the other Setanta channels, so I (and many others I suspect) will just end up cancelling.
