2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
The semifinals matches for the New York Golden Gloves conclude on Friday, but so far I pieced together three weight classes for the finals in the open division, which are being held April 16th and 17th at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
112 - Juan Ramphol (Cops N Kids BC) vs. Jose Rivera (Omni BC)
152 - Steven Martinez (Cops N Kids BC) vs. Christopher Ventura (Yonkers YMCA)
165 - Marcus Browne (Cops N Kids BC) vs. Naim Terbunja (Veteran's Memorial)
Ramphol is the defending champion and two-time GG winner and faces Rivera, who he defeated for the NYGG title in 2007. Rivera lost in the finals in 2008 to nationally ranked Raul Lopez, but has captured a NYGG title as 112-pound novice in 2006.
Martinez is the defending 152-pound NYGG champ and national champ. He also won the NYGG at 152 in the novice divison and defeated Ventura in the finals of the NY Metros last year.
Nationally ranked Browne, who won at 165 in the novice division in 2008, will have his hands full with Terbunja, who represented Sweden in the 2008 Olympics, but has relocated to Long Island, New York four months ago.

Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
Any comments on boxers in other open division weight classes?
Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
three more days of semifinals action, as I get the results, I will post them
Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
two more open match-ups:
141 - Pedro Sosa (Cops N Kids BC) vs. Jeremy Fiorentino (Mendez)
178 - David Thompson (Brotherhood BC) vs. Ahmad Mickens (unattached)
Fighting in his first NY Golden Gloves, the 16-year-old Sosa is the youngest boxer in the tournament.
He also won the JO title at 145 pounds in 2008.

Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
I'm going out on a limb here and saying Ventura decisions Martinez in the final... ventura got madd skills and if he fights his fight he will win .. he cant stand and trade he needs to use his speed movement and combos and make sure he does his roadwork heavy for the next coupleweeks...
Pedro Sosa will stop this guy .. the final shoulda been Sosa vs Isaac which was fought last night which was close as hell..
Marcus Browne will be too much for Terbunja, #3 in this country is better than #1 in Sweden

Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
Is that the same David Thompson that had boxed at 201 pounds in the 2007 Midwestern Trials and 2007 National Golden Gloves?NYboxing wrote:two more open match-ups:

Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
I guess he dropped down in weight. They list Thompson 6-4/6-5 and he fought and lost in the novice finals at 201 in NYGG in 2006.
Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
yea that's the same Dave Thompson.. that guy works really hard
Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
Thompson didn't look like a guy who should drop down to 178. He was tall, muscular and lean. He must have lost some muscle mass in order to make 178 or he is really dehydrating to do it.
Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
132 - Shemuel Pagan (Mendez BC) vs. Vassiliy Zherebnenko (Brighton BC)
Nationally ranked 132-pound Pagan is seeking his fourth NYGG title and faces Zherebnenko in a rematch of last year's finals.
Friday night is the last day of semifinals action

Zeddie fought Pedro Sosa at the 2008 Silver Gloves nationals. Zed won, but he gave alot of respect to Pedro's power. Pedro is a hard hitter! They are both 16 yrs old. Our juniors that are now open are making a great transition. You have Pedro Sosa, Zeddie Adams, Alantez Fox, Eric De Leon. We will also being seeing Donald Anderson 165 next year. That young man is amazing. I saw the injury Pedro sustained at the 2008 JO's, good to see he has recovered well. Congrats on his award.

Re: 2009 New York City Golden Gloves.
Yeah, we (Alantez) fought Pedro in the Silvers in the round before Zeddie beat him and I thought we clearly won, but Pedro is a good boxer and I'm glad to see that he is going to NGG and it's a really impressive accomplishment winning the Ray Robinson award for the whole Daily News GG!! Congrats to him. I'm with you ZMOMMI in that I love to see our JOs coming up and making an immediate impact in the open class. I think that the other bonus for these young boxers is that they haven't had to readjust the to new format unlike a lot of other boxers. Donald Anderson is my favorite boxer to watch!!! I can't believe that he has another year in the JOs either but it's true. Open class boxers at 165lbs better just enjoy this year, because Donald will be the man next year - no doubt about it. Tell Zeddie that we said good luck in Utah.ZMOMMI wrote:Sugar Ray Robinson award (outstanding boxer) went to 141 pound winner and youngest boxer in the tournament, Pedro Sosa.
