Latest industry studies show das Krauts are well ahead of the Poms in terms of per-capita beer consumption:

LONDON, England (AP) -- Despite Britain's reputation as the home of beer-sozzled thugs, Germany is now top of the European league for beer consumption, according to a survey.

Time to step it up, lads - nothing less than national pride at stake here. If things keep going as they are, you'll see the Italians and the Spaniards pass you as well, and that would be shameful indeed. Bad enough they have better weather and sexier women - if you Brits can't even hold your own with them in the pub anymore, that would be a sad day for England ... so time to leave your car keys with the barman, roll up your sleeves, unbutton your shirtcollar and get to it! "England, England, über Alle, Alle Bierdrinker in der Welt..."

We cannot let this shocking development carry on. British lager louts of the world unite, and get down the pub this weekend and drink as much as possible.

Drinking beer may be the one thing we can beat the Germans at.

I seem to recall that it was the czechs that drinks the most beer in europe with the germans on 2nd place, the irish on 3rd palce and the danes on 4th place.

They all drink out of litre glasses so I would kind of expect the germans to drink more.
So long as we don't so far down we end up drinking low calorie 3% 'light' beer like the yanks, I won't really mind

but if you drink more than 3- 5% beers ina session your an alcoholic and need counselling apparently. Better book myself in.

I think the term should be "British Drinkers" or "British Boozers".

A 'Publican' is a licence holder i.e. bar manager!!

It's a decent point, the majority of landlords i've ever seen are definitely heavyweights.

And i'll be damned if i'm going to let a German beat me in any competition. Let the hard drinking commence.

I was at the Munich Beer Festival last year, and I can vouch the Germans certainly put it away in a highly efficient manner.

At one point, the toilets being very crowded, I tired to find a place to have a piss. I then came across a German, helping his completely unconcious mate have a slash - which was a sobering sight....

He had him gripped under his armpits, and was pointing him towards a wall with his pecker out.

His unconcious mate was dead to the world, head lolling forward on his chest as he blasted an almighty jet onto the wall.

I was killing myself laughing, and this guy just continued to piss for ever - no end to it, he must've drunk around 18 jars, and the whole time he was fast asleep.

Eventualy his mate lost patience and dropped the poor guy in a heap by the wall, where he continued to piss into the air like an out of control fire hose.

Very surprised by these figures. Every year when top drinkers in Europe are published, in my experience the Belgians invariably come out on top by a country mile.

must admit the older I get the less I like beer, give me a bottle of St Emillion grand cru anyday....(oooh lad di daa)

tho i must admit I dont drink red when Im in a pub that would look a bit light on the loafers.

I have a top 50 list from 95 that shows whish countries that drinks the most alcohol. Luxembourg leads, France 2nd and Portugal 3rd.

Yes, I just mean beer. Stats I've always seen that get dragged out every year about beer/lager usually have the Belgians, Danes, Luxemburgers, Germans up there above us.

Burp, erm, I mean, bump.

About beer & ale supposedly not being a real man's drink, that's a bunch of hooey (a.k.a. "bollocks" to you limeys). You gonna drink a glass of cabernet or a few vodka shots on a hot summer's day or to help you down a massive plate of spicy food? If all you want to do is get blitzed, by all means go for the hard stuff, but if you want to have a nice long session of eat, drink and be merry, it's beer you want.

Remember - it's not about the alcohol % of the drink, it's about the alcohol % of the drinker. ;)
