Frank Mantell
Frank Mantell
Several of Frank Mantell's bouts are attributed to another fighter named Frank Mantell on Boxrec. It has been printed in the recent Harry Greb bio that Mantell retired after one more fight after being KOd by Greb. Not true. Mantell fought on for several more years part time and notched several more fights on his record.
Re: Frank Mantell
I assume you are referring to the boxer in the database out of Wichita. Do you have any specific bouts that are not attributed to Mantell?
Re: Frank Mantell
right off the top of my head his fights with celmars, krohn, and wiggam.
Re: Frank Mantell
Your memory is good about the 3 fights you mentioned. However, they were against Frank Mantell(Canadian Champion-later of Wichita) and are properly entered. All three bouts have been newspaper verified by me.
In regards to the OTHER Mantell. He retired and went to work for the Dayton, Ohio police department. He then quit the police department and tried a comeback and fought 2 more fights. Greb and Gibbons. Could not find any more fights after that. Gibbons beat him soundly.

Re: Frank Mantell
Not true. The newspaper reports show pictures and drawings of Mantell and he is indeed the Frank Mantell who fought Greb, Gibbons and other notables. In fact in all of those reports they do writeups on his background, where he lives, and what he has been up to and even mention some of the fights which are cross referenced with other fighters. He is indeed the Frank Mantell of Dayton/Pawtucket who briefly claimed the MW championship and who supposedly retired after being stopped by Greb and Gibbons.
Re: Frank Mantell
The Wiggam bout is definitely THE Mantell. The Sandusky Star Journal of December 27, 1920, is pretty clear in identifying him.
