Boxing books??

Just read "Standing Eight" (Jesus Chaxez) pretty average.

I liked Eubank and "Hands of Stone". "War baby" was a bit sluggish.

Not read the Atlas Book yet, but it comes highly recommended.

Hands of Stone is the best boxing book I've read, an absolute must for all boxing fans

Just completed The Biggest Fight by Michael Watson. Only took a couple of days. A terrific read I would recommend it. Think somebody said they were building up to it as it would be sad. Far from it really, the tone is one more of courage and triumph - in boxing, in recovery, in the court and in life in general. It doesn't drag it's feet and the final chapter about Watson's London Marathon almost brought a tear I'm not ashamed to say. Good guy

i have always wanted to read that book as it seems an interesting idea.

i think there was actually a documentary on it cos I am familiar with the story but I've never read the book. A black lad if I'm correct, by which I am just trying to establish we're on about the same thing

it got a lot of press at the time if i remember at the time, i always thought it would make a good subject for a documentry. Of course in this day and age they would want to take a famous d list celeb and make it into a show. It would be more interesting to get a member of the public and train them up to see how they would deal with a full on training camp and diet preparing for a fight, i'll do it.

tell me about it. I did some boxing training for about 3 years in my mid 20s but always work or football or a knee injury stopped me taking it up seriously. I'm 30 soon and a mate who had to stop football cos of his back has got into boxing at 29, licence etc..but as yet to box. I am 30 shortly and am wanting to do the same, after that I can't get a licence. Am in fairly good shape and am getting trained by my brother who is a pretty decent boxer.....I need to drop two stone though we think and the dieting is a bast*rd!

I would recommend

"Chaos , Corruption and Glory" and " A Year in Boxing " by Thomas Hauser.

"Dark Trade" by Donald McRae

"Wrecking Machine" by Alex Wade.


Also , a sort of different boxing book about bare knuckle boxing called " Tarmac Warrior " about the life of Gypsy fighter Billy Cribb. One of the craziest books ive read.


Has anyone read "Irish Thunder: The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward" and is it any good?

anyone read Jock Mcavoy Rochdale Thunderbolt book.

Remember me grandad used to tell me a story that Jock was sitting in his car at a petrol station after he'd finished fighting and was a bit washed up and some punk starting taking the piss so Jock feigned to be deaf in one ear and beckoned the guy over and when he got close BOOM, he put him spark out. Now I don't know if that's true but I would imagine so as me grandad came from Rochdale.

I read that, (if it's the one by Brian Hughes). Enjoyed it.

10. This Bloody Mary is the Last Thing I Own by Jonathan Rendall - I can't remember too much aboit this, but I remember I really enjoyed it. I remember it a being an unusual look at boxing

I'm re-reading This Bloody Mary is the Last Thing I Own at the moment and would dearly love to read Scream: The Real Mike Tyson also by Rendall, but the problem is I've no idea if it was ever actually published.

It has an ISBN number and depending on what site you look at was either published in Oct 2007 and is currently out of stock or is yet to be published. My local Borders don't have a copy and reckon that an airport-only paperback edition existed at some point but only in Asia (!?) and that the UK hardback was cancelled.

Has anyone ever seen the book or know for sure if it was published or not? Any idea where I might get my hands on a copy? Thanks and fingers crossed.

Ye a great insight to the 4 kings also Buchanan's book is really good I've just red Benn and Eubank Eubank is just as i expected he was crazy and talked the truth whereas i thought Benns wasnt good but 4 kings is by miles the best ive seen

Harper Collins confirmed in an email that the book has been "abandoned" but didn't explain why.
