Meehan calls out the Russian giant
Meehan calls out the Russian giant
By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing
WBA #1 Kali Meehan (35-3, 29 KOs) is calling out to WBA champion Nikolay Valuev (50-1, 34 KOs) after reading that the “Russian Giant” was considering a voluntary defense of the championship. The WBA #1 heavyweight Meehan talked with Fightnews today. “Nikolay Valuev has to fight me now, if he wants to have one more voluntary defense,” Meehan said. “I’m ready to fight him on May 30th.” Meehan went on to say, “I’m the WBA #1, so I should be the mandatory, but it doesn’t matter to me if I’m the mandatory or not as I’m confident of a victory. Not only a victory, but a KO victory! I will do to him what I did to DaVarryl Willamson. Valuev is scared to face me and so is his promotor Wilfried Sauerland. My promoter Don King is negotiating with the WBA, to give me this fight. I wish to give the boxing fans the fights they want to see. At the moment there is a lot of fat, lazy big men, tired after three rounds, and it’s killing our sport. Fight me Valuev, face me in the ring! I leave this in God’s hands.”
i didn't realise he is religious

It would be nice to see Meehan take the belt away from the human snooze button.

Is it only me and Mr. Bollox who see this as an incredibly obvious joke? The wink icon didn't give you any clue either?

We all see the joke.
It was funny the first time but is boring after the 10th. Like an alzheimic uncle who keeps telling the same joke all night.

Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
Is Kali going to fight anyone, if he doesn't fight the Giant, he should consider a top prospect to push his claims. Inactivity is never good ![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)
Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
he is ranked no.1. if that is not enough to push his claims then nothing is. he isn't going to get a title shot any quicker no matter who he fights.
Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
Yeah i know and agree he is number 1, but aren't there 2 champions in the WBA , so doesn't that make him really the number 2?buster007 wrote:he is ranked no.1. if that is not enough to push his claims then nothing is. he isn't going to get a title shot any quicker no matter who he fights.
Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
Does it matter? Neither of them want to fight him. If he is listed to fight a rated fighter, that fighter suddenly comes down with an "injury" and Kali is put in against a lesser light.
Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
i think meehan should either fight an average joe to keep active or just wait untill the champ (whoever it may be) is forced to fight him. its not worth the risk fighting another darryl williamson type fighter because his ranking can only go one way and that's down. he may have to wait up to 18 months for a shot at the title but it may be the only and sooner way to get his chance. if he doesn't fight between now and when he gets his shot then he will have to have trained like never before to give it his best shot as he may never get another chance.

Actually, shouldn't that double his chances of actually getting his mandatory shot?Hounddog wrote:Yeah i know and agree he is number 1, but aren't there 2 champions in the WBA , so doesn't that make him really the number 2?buster007 wrote:he is ranked no.1. if that is not enough to push his claims then nothing is. he isn't going to get a title shot any quicker no matter who he fights.
I think he's rated too highly, but being as the WBA have ranked him no. 1, they should at least honour their own rules.
Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
I can't stand the WBA, they are by a complete mile a dud organisation, nothing is normal to them, there titles remind me of a parent teaching a child how to share their toys..... 1 title for you....and 1 for you...now we all have titles, everybody is a winner.oliverfennell wrote:Actually, shouldn't that double his chances of actually getting his mandatory shot?Hounddog wrote:Yeah i know and agree he is number 1, but aren't there 2 champions in the WBA , so doesn't that make him really the number 2?buster007 wrote:he is ranked no.1. if that is not enough to push his claims then nothing is. he isn't going to get a title shot any quicker no matter who he fights.

Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
He has been fighting average joes, and KOing them in 2 or 3 rounds. This is achieving nothing. Having seen the mess he made of Williamson I do not see your point.buster007 wrote:i think meehan should either fight an average joe to keep active or just wait untill the champ (whoever it may be) is forced to fight him. its not worth the risk fighting another darryl williamson type fighter because his ranking can only go one way and that's down. he may have to wait up to 18 months for a shot at the title but it may be the only and sooner way to get his chance. if he doesn't fight between now and when he gets his shot then he will have to have trained like never before to give it his best shot as he may never get another chance.
Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
how is it achieving nothing?
it means he holds his ranking while fighting occasionally while he waits for his title shot.
if you had watched the fight you would know that meehan was struggling and showing little when he scored the ko. he was exhausted after three rounds. which is why fighting someone like williamson could jeopardise what may be his last chance at a title, not to mention probably a much needed payday.
ok then who do u propose he fight and why should he?

Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
I did see it. If Meehan was tired after three rounds, how did he flatten Williamson in the sixth? Which fight were you watching?
If you do not fight rated fighters you slip off the radar. Kali has challenged every heavyweight out there. When will one of them step up to the plate?

Re: Meehan calls out the Russian giant
he was struggling when he threw a bomb and won the fight. even he would admit that. he took the fight at short notice which was starting to show.
there would be plenty of guys ranked around 7th and down that would want to fight him. he is almost 40 and is a perfect candidate for up and comers to try and climb the ladder.
so there isn't a heavyweight that wants to fight him? none? so danny williams, james toney, hasim rahman are avoiding him as well as the klitschko's etc.

Nine days notice including travelling time from Sydney to New York with no hard sparring and to KO Williamson in six rounds is a hell of an effort. He was on the front foot when he hit Williamson, which hardly seems like struggling. The challenge is out there, why has nobody taken it up?
