I just read this article over at maxboxing and it's about the 100th one i've read making the same sort of point. Now I don't disagree with it totally, but how many f**king times are American boxing writers gonna use the NBA/NFL excuse for why they are not producing decent heavyweights.

Sure that has a part to play, but do they not realise that boxing is not the first choice sport for anyone in Europe either? We lose our best athletes to other sports as well. The reason Europe is producing more world class fighters is because we are gaining ground as far as training techniques go and since the fall of the USSR, Eastern Europeans have become heavily involved in professional sports.

They seem to think that boxing is religion in Europe and there are massive live and tv audiences for fights, when in fact we have the same problems here as they do in the States. I wish these writers would do a little more research before rehashing the same crap that's been spouted for the last 5 or 6 years.

Agreed. I'd also argue that basketball was more popular in the 90s, which also happened to be a boom time for heavyweight boxing, so the theory doesn't really compute.
