Mohammed should wait for his time - Okedara

Razak Mohammed may have to wait until later in October before fulfilling his dream of becoming the National Super Middle-weight title holder, if indications coming from Mojeed Okedara, the current champion, are anything to go by.

Mohammed challenged the national champion after defeating Bassey “Hitman” Ekpeyong in a recent non-title bout at the National Stadium in Lagos, in March. The challenge has since been accepted by Okedara but on the condition that Mohammed’s camp secures a promoter for their proposed bout.

“We have accepted his challenge but they have to get someone to promote the fight,” said Okedara’s manager, Onyeka Elum. He also said that Okedara’s immediate plan was to go to London to work on his “chances” of contending for the world title.

“Okedara is going back to London to improve his chances of fighting for the World Boxing Council title so tell Mohammed that if he wants to fight, we will give him a good fight after October.”

Mohammed, however, feels this move is another ploy by Okedara to avoid getting into the ring with him, insisting it wasn’t the first time the champion would be doing so.

Mohammed, who works as a carpenter when not fighting in the ring, said, “I will stop him and he knows it. That is why he would rather fight with unfit men than a person like me who spends every morning at the gym.

“Last year, I wanted to fight for the vacant National Super Middleweight title with Mojeed Okedara but a few weeks to the bout he travelled to London on supposed invitation. When he came back he arranged with Alani Suleiman to fight for the national title,” he said.

But Okedara played down Mohammed’s claims. “The fight was a bout that was never fixed. You know people talk for fun even if they do not have the potential for or cannot perform an act; they will always say they know and they can do,” he said.

Elum, however, counselled Mohammed to be more patient, especially as there were other boxers waiting in line for a swing at his ward’s title.

“By right, he is not a contender for the title. He should wait for his time. He is no match for Okedara, so he should wait in line for his turn,” he said.
