Untrue. It was the year before he fought Marciano. His win over LaStarza was huge at the time:

I seem to recall LaStraza drawing with Marciano or somthing like that..... so the ref was asked his opinion and he gave it to the Rock

I hadn't heard that before , about Cockell being runner up to Bannister .
Its incredible when you think of it with the magnitude of Bannister's achievement .
Even by British standards Don was hardly a legendary fighter . Says something about how popular boxing was back then .

When Bannister broke the four minute mile, Parliament was interrupted. It's the only time a sporting achievement has halted proceedings in Parliament.

I dont know about that but I do know that the first Marciano - LaStraza fight was VERY contraversial, many people claim Rocky got the edge because of who his manager was, Al Weill.
