A couple of big calls there...VIC Darchinyan has agreed to terms for his biggest payday yet by taking on Joseph Agbeko in Miami on July 11.
Darchinyan and his manager Elias Nassar were involved in negotiations for more than six weeks before they finalised the IBF bantamweight world title stoush on Sunday.
The 33-year-old Darchinyan is expected to pocket more than $1 million should he flatten Ghanian-born Agbeko and win his seventh world title in a third weight division - a feat that would easily make him the most successful Aussie boxer in history.
"There is an economic downturn, and the fight could have been worth more, but there has still been plenty of interest in Vic," Nassar said last night.
"He's in Russia at the moment where he has been training and honouring business commitments where he is promoting the fight to the Russian and Armenian communities.
"The fight in Miami is in the middle of July and it (temperature) could be around 50C.
"We'll head over to our training camp again in Las Vegas where we've been the past four times."
Darchinyan became the undisputed super-flyweight champion in February when he stopped Jorge Arce in the US. He has to add less than 2kg to fight as a bantamweight and has already started to follow a strict weights program to make sure he loses none of his power.
Nonito Donaire, the only man to beat Darchinyan, was mooted as an opponent, as was WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel.
Should Darchinyan have no problems with bantamweight and defeat Agbeko, who has won 26 of his 27 fights, super-bantamweight champion Israel Vasquez will be on the slugger's immediate radar.
Sydney-based Darchinyan is a superstar in his native Armenia and the US, where he has continued to wow fight fans because of his prowess, but he continues to struggle for media attention in Australia.

Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
In any case, I've only got Vic winning three world titles. Even if you count the IBO, that still only makes five. Where did the other one come from?
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
Its all bullshit, He isnt the best ever from Australia. 3 weight division now is the same as one weight division back in the day.
Honestly at 118 Rose would have easily beat him.

Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
So would Carruthers, Fenech and Ferreri. And Elly Bennett may have decapitated him
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
If Curruthers and Rose were around today they would be multi division champions probably over 4-5 weights.bollox wrote:So would Carruthers, Fenech and Ferreri. And Elly Bennett may have decapitated him
Fenech would have few more as well.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
if they didn't rob fenech with a draw in nelson 1 he would have been 4 division champ .then he would have went up a division full of confidence and beat the feather fisted pernell whitaker on sheer work rate alone to become 5 time world champ in different weight divisions.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
Fenech would have been easily beaten by Whitaker. He should have stayed at feather. Vic will find out at some point that going up is not all it's cracked up to be. He's the unified titleholder so why not stay there?
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
Best ever-no. Bloody good and top value to watch yes. Do think it is shameful he has not had the exposure he deserves in his adopted country. Unsure why-perhpas a case of the reduced interest in the lower weight div fighters and/or the diminshed interest in boxing from the media since the Mundine/green rivalry.Though sadly Mundane still gets attention for his very very very lame efforts in the last 2 years.
As for Fenech/whitaker. I am a huge fan of Fenech the fighter but think Whitaker would have done him in badly. Considering he was KOd by 2 relatively light punchers in Grove and Holiday going up another division would have been bad for him. If he was at his top and under Lewis then it would have been an interesting fight(great contrast of styles)but....think Pernell would have won, possibly by KO. Dont think Hurtado would agree with the feather fisted comments. OUCH.

Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
pernell whitaker didn't fight to knock people out he was a counterpuncher but you couldn't counterpunch the volume of punches fenech through .don't forget fenech only got knocked out because he wasn't hungry after the nelson 1 robbery .that was shown in nelson 2 .but i would have liked to seen the same fenech that fought nelson 1 that through nelson around like a rag doll fight whitaker. and whitaker wouldn't have been strong enough to hold him out pernell whitaker was lazy
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
when you are talking about hurtado that whitaker beat .that was 5 or 6 years after the fact . i'm talking about the whitaker that narrowly out pointed nelson , the same nelson that was going to be knocked out by fenech had he not tore his glove or something like that to get a rest in nelson 1
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
I agree Pre Nelson 2, Fenech Vs Whitaker would have been a great fight. I don't know if Fenech could have beaten him but with his style and workrate would give Whitaker nightmares. Whitaker needed room to be dominant in fights Fenech would give him no room at all.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
Your "lazy" comment David is an interesting one-the example i gave of Hurtado(if my fading memory serves me correct)is perhaps even an example of that ie he was down on points and the corner told him he needed a KO and hey presto....put in an effort and did the job. Certainly woulda been an interesting one.To me a chin is a chin and as you step up at some point it will be tested. Whitaker still would of hit harder than many of Fenechs opponents and he was so open to the right. It would of been a great fight with Fenech in top gear- defensive genius Mr Whitaker...hmmm,perhaps against fighters who arent hitting you every 1/4 of a second.I just figure if Grove could catch and devastate him then Pernell would have eventually got one in.A chin is a chin and its not like the preNelson2 Fenech never got hit.
Still mate, would of been a great fight.
Still mate, would of been a great fight.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
If Vic wins this fight,he does deserve to be mentioned, but i still don't know about the best.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
i agree if fenech fought whitaker in the welters he would have been beaten whitaker was a slick boxer , but if he fought him for fenechs 5 weight division championship had he not been robbed nelson 1 pre nelson 2 at lightweight with the hunger still there ,he would have walked through whitakers defence and out worked him. but i agree we were all robbed of one hell of a fight.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
I believe he is having trouble making super flyweight. Bantamweight is closer to his natural weight.bollox wrote:Fenech would have been easily beaten by Whitaker. He should have stayed at feather. Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
He holds the WBC, WBA and IBF Super flyweight titles. Before that he won the IBO Super fly title but relinquished it.oliverfennell wrote:In any case, I've only got Vic winning three world titles. Even if you count the IBO, that still only makes five. Where did the other one come from?
At Flyweight he was IBF and IBO Champion.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
I watched most of Ferreri's fights. He was a good fighter, but just short of World Class. Keep in mind Darchinian won his first 28 fights. Carruthers' first career consisted of only 19 fights. I would rather not talk about his comeback. Bennett was a "one pace" fighter. He never upped the pace in his fights.bollox wrote:So would Carruthers, Fenech and Ferreri. I would have been more impressed with Fenech if he had beaten Grove, who KOed Jeff after winning on points against Ellis.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
Ferreri short of world class? I'd say he was very much world class. I'd liked to have seen Vic going in against a prime Carlos Zarate (Zarate by KO mid rounds). Problem with Ferreri was that he had feather fists

What about kostya, he needs a mention, and i think he's easily top 5 of any fighter Australia has produced.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
Like to elaborate OF. A fairly definitive answer- suggesting a one sided affair?!?!?
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
so pernell whitaker at lightweight would have just bombed fenech out i don't think so ,he's no duran don't compare whitaker to an aggressive fighter . pernell would have tryed to out point fenech which was impossible with fenechs workrate. look forget about calvin grove and holiday, fenechs spirit was gone after being robbed in nelson 1 and fenech fought with will more than ability and when the drive was gone any half decent fighter would have beat him just like tyson .but in his prime he would have wiped the floor with whitaker and darchian on the same night.
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
Fenech would have wiped the floor with Vic but would have been easily outpointed by Whitaker
Re: Vic gets a pay day - Is he the best ever?
i don't know about that, because fenechs work rate was just ridiculous i have never seen anyone work that hard . guaranteed whitaker would have made him miss a few but fenech was just a more determined fighter than what whitaker was . whitaker showboats to much.
