Cotto Tumps down Uncle...

According to all local newspapers, Miguel Cotto got into a fight with trainer/uncle Evangelista Cotto after a difference of opinion concerning Miguel’s training. It was reported that at approximately 3:00 P.M. local time Miguel and his trainer got into a heated discussion with regards to training strategies, which caused Miguel to fire his uncle. Allegedly Evangelista attacked Miguel and Cotto answered back with shots of his own. The fight first started at Bairoa Gym where the Cotto prepares for all his fights but the dispute continued in Miguel’s house in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Police intervened in the incident and charges might be filled against Miguel Cotto. Both Evangelista and Miguel Cotto, as well as Cotto’s father, Miguel Cotto Senior suffered minor injuries. This is not the first time that Miguel Cotto and his trainer have had disputes, although none have been reported to reach such a boiling point.

This is the most shocking thing I have heard about Boxing since Hitman09 said Langford Beats Lennox..

Cotto speaks..

Miguel Cotto has issued a statement to the press concerning his incident with his uncle/trainer. The same, revealed through El Nuevo Dia Newspaper states the following…”This afternoon, after concluding my training session for my next fight, I sustained an incident with my uncle Evangelista Cotto. This is a family and very personal matter, which is why I ask that you give me the space and respect in my intimacy needed to cope with situation. Let it be known that as of this moment Evangelista Cotto will no longer form part of my corner, but at the same time, you should all rest assured that I will continue to work tirelessly for my next scheduled fight in June, where I will successfully defend my title with pride for all Puerto Ricans.”

Madness!

Can I just ask who the hell writes these press releases?

At least it raised a smile from me, but I really think that a superstar like Cotto should invest in a decent press officer. Maybe the problem is that whoever was writing it wasn't a native English speaker, but that screams of being bush-league in itself. If the autor is a native English speaker, they have no business being in anywayshapeorform part of any copy designed for public viewing and is clearly not cut out for the job.

Hopeless and hilarious.

I think they may have quoted Cotto word for word.

'Tump' is a west indian term for punch.

And call me illiterate againand I will 'tump' you down!

Just playing!

As J said - it can mean more than just a 'THUMP[' - basically a good old fashioned beatdown!

Right guys, the big question is, who will take over in Cotto's corner?

Clottey is a tough, tough opponent. If Miguel is to appoint a new trainer, I think he should do it soon because of things like strategy.

I'm quite surprised by the news of the incident, but at the same time, Cotto & his uncle have had disputes in the past, so maybe its not that big of a surprise! Maybe is was only a matter of time!

This is not good to happen at any time, let alone in preparation for a bout! I hope this doesn't have any bearing on Cotto's training or performance!

Guys, guy, guys. There’s more on this Cotto v Cotto fracas on DR’s ESPN Blog. According to Rafael, Evangelista did pretty good in the gym bust up, being told by Miguel that he was being fired, and punching him in response, cutting Miguel’s nose as a result. Apparently, Miguel just left the gym calmly and went home.

Now if that was me, I would be sitting there thinking “OK, lost my temper there and punched, like, one of the best welterweights in the world. Big mistake to make: that could have gotten ugly for you, Carbo.” I would have then had a few stiff drinks to calm my nerves, thanked my lucky stars that I wasn’t right this minute getting my entire body put in plaster, and spent a few quiet moments thinking about the best way to lay low for the next several decades.

But no. Not Evangelista. Oh no. He marches straight over to Miguel’s house to get it on again. This time armed with a brick (smart move) that misses Miguel, but smashes the window on his brand new Jag. Now just imagine that. Miguel would have been standing in silence (he doesn’t speak at the best of times, so god knows he would have been standing in silence) and thinking “I’m trying to be mature here, homes, and I can take jour cheapshot on de nooosse, but when jou break mah car den eetz time for jou to pay de price.”

What I liked about DR’s blog, is that one paragraph ended with one of those wonderfully understated sentences that tells you everything you need to know by omitting detail:

“Evangelista had to go to the hospital for treatment for an undisclosed injury.”

Yeah, undisclosed because there’s no proper medical term for 'broken face'.
