No disrespect, but that's irrelevant. That's simply down to the lack of pacing and lack of technique that comes when you do anything you're not familiar with.Southpaw Stylist wrote:At the end of the day, put any "super-fit athlete" in the ring for 3 rounds with an proportionally "unfit" boxer, and i can guarantee the non-boxer would still be blowing like a carthorse at the end of it.
The same would equally apply if you put a boxer in a cross-country skiiing race or on a mountain stage of the Tour de France - doesn't prove anything.
That's why you have to do the type of general tests that Stu was referring to.

Yip potherwise known as the bleep test, ive done this many times when I was playing rugby, its a fookin killer. Basically you have two sets of markers at a specific distance usually 20 metres, you have to hit that marker everytime you hear the bleep. This starts of slow a light jog and increases gradually to a run. Contrary to polpular belief after about level ten it doesnt go any faster but as you become more tired or your body "maxes out" this becomes more difficult to maintain. - Maxing out, is when your muscles cannot get the oxygen they need to perform i.e. your knackered.
Usually followed by a bout of vomitting, followed by laying down for some time.
You could hear the groan when we turned up for training and they said, its bleep test day boys. Its possibly one of the most painful training exercises there are (if done to the best of your ability).
Celebrity boxer Ben Fogel had just completed a Saharan Marathon (I think?) before going in to training with Jimmy Mac and was still at pains to point out that the boxing training was the hardest thing he'd ever done.Southpaw Stylist wrote:At the end of the day, put any "super-fit athlete" in the ring for 3 rounds with an proportionally "unfit" boxer, and i can guarantee the non-boxer would still be blowing like a carthorse at the end of it.

I see no reason why not, after all, Sonny Liston had the longest reach and was onlu 6' 1", so if there is that much variance in one direction, then why not in the other.knockout wrote:a classic understate i see all the time, is the klitchkos reach listed as 79".... no way someone who is 6 8" has a short ass reach like thatknockout artist wrote:Yeah, Ive met Williams a couple of times. He's no more than 6'1".knockout wrote: williams is short for a heavy, probably 6'1..
I'd say Tyson is 5'10"
The only fighter I know who appeared to understate his height was John Mugabi. He's listed as 5'8" but looked more like 5'11" to me.
This is one for Kovit :D
Thomas Hearns was only 6' 1" and a slim framed man, yet his reach was almost as long as Ali and Lewis'. Carnera was 6'6" more or less, yet his reach was only just over an inch greater than Liston. Liston's was actually longer than Jess Willards.
I think that Vitali's height is more likely to be exaggerated. Did he really look 3 inches taller than Lewis? Reach also includes the breadth at the shoulder as it measures the whole span, so a fighter could have very long arms, or very broad shoulders to make up their reach.
Check this link if you don't believe it.
J, The VO2 max test IS different to the bleep test (although that is an assessment of aerobic fitness). The VO2 max test is a labarotory test in which the athlete is on a ergometer (usually a running machine or exercise bike) and they are breathing into what is known as a douglas bag to test the oxygen / carbon dioxide levels of the athletes breath. Also (although not actually part of the test) the athletes blood lactate is measured via small insertions into the ear lobe to get the blood.J wrote:stujones wrote:The VO2 max test is considered the gold standard method of assessing aerobic capacity. I was thinking triathlon too. Cycling and swimming are very tiring but put the two together and a 10km runLickszz wrote:I'll say world class Triathlon athletes are very fit. The difference is with boxing is that your working very hard and taking direct punishment at the same time which zaps your strength and takes your stamina.
Its worse, because the pace does increase and you go on till you cannot continue - I know you do that with the bleep test, but when you have three guys in white coats telling you to continue by your ear, its tough.J wrote:oops apologies then! not done that one!![]()
sounds far more scientific and less painfull
though im not sure aobut having small insertions into my earlobes....sounds kinda kinky
The amount of times I have told my lecturer to fornicate off when I'm knackered and quite dellirious is no-ones business. You breath into the bag at every minute for a few seconds while still running.
