Carl Johannson.
Carl Johannson.
Now we have discussed / guessed the respected future of current BBC British fighters (such as Harrison, Haye and the Hennesey lads). However, one fighter who I think this decision to cut down on British boxing will effect a great deal is Carl Johansson.
Carl was going great guns since he returned to these sure, but there hasn't been a mentioned of what is going to happen to him now the BBC deal is cut short. With Sky only showing Hearn / Harding fights on a fight by fight basis I cannot envisage Johannson getting much air time because he is not the most charismatic of fighters and for years has been a forgotton man of British boxing.
He's in a devision that is doing well and I would like to see a mini tournament featuring Docherty vs Arthur and Gomez vs Johannson - however that might not never happen with the boxing politics these days.
What does the future hold for Johansson.

Agreed Jacko, one concern I have is that he will probably look alot smaller than the top 3 Super feather and I worry about his strength to back these guys up. But undoubted talent and I think is very much the devisions' darkhorse.
However, being the devision's darkhorse is not necessarily a good thing to get exposure and TV time, especially if you haven't got a Prince Naseem / Junior Witter type personality.

they showed the fighter he lost the SD to the other night on channel four or five, koba gogoladze.
gogoladze comfortably UD`d a decent pro in lamar murphy to remain unbeaten.
a product of the old eastern block coaching school and an ex world amateur champ gogoladze looked very sharp, especially for a 31 year old.
johannson and gogoladze swapped knockdowns in that fight and carl is the only fighter to put him down up to this point.
so even his loss doesn`t seem so bad the way gogaladze`s career is shaping.

i like Johansson very much. he's fast shaping up to be one of my favourite fighters, the american influence on his fighting style is very noticable and tends to set him apart from the domestic crop. Id be surprised if uncle frank doesnt try and take him to SN.
id like to see him in with the likes of Arthur, Docherty or Gomez but fear his style mught make him one to be avoided, another member of the "who needs them club".
of course if he were to go to SN then we could kiss goodbye to match ups against arthur or gomez. one thing in his favour is the US angle. having spent so mucyh time there learning the trade and taking his first fights in that country, it should be too much of a problem for him to return and campaign there maybe snapping up a belt or two before coming back and taking on his domestic rivals here.

Re: Carl Johannson.
Johanneson is promoted by A-Force. So seeing as A-Force doesnt have a TV deal right now he is just as in the sh1t as Audley is. The Skelton v Harrison bill is a co-promotion so why not Johanneson v Arthur Courtney Fry is the same so I dunno if Warren has an appropriate Light Heavy to put in with him. Surley this would make sense if the Harrison v Skelton bill is made as a co-promotion for both A-Force and Sports Network fighters to be on show.stujones wrote:Now we have discussed / guessed the respected future of current BBC British fighters (such as Harrison, Haye and the Hennesey lads). Yeah Silkov, I can see your point and thats what I was trying to make. Personally, I'm not sure if he is the best Super Feather but he's certainly a contendor and I would love to see him in with the big boys.
My worry is that inside the ring he is a bit too good (like a Junior Witter) but outside the ring he has little charisma, so I do worry he'll be forgotten about. He had a nice little number as the chief support to Harrison, now of course with Audley quite likely to form a partnership with a promoter even that slot is in jeopardy.

I dunno about best Super Feather in the country, I see Gomez as that, but I think Johanneson as the second best and would like to see him fight for the British title, then defend against the likes of Docherty and the rest. Why cant Arthur v Johanneson be made should the Harrison v Skelton fight be made as a co-promotion.

James, firstly I cannot see Arthur wanting to fight Johansson at this stage because he could be involved in the British title fight scene (so why risk this position). Secondly, I still have my doubts about Harrison vs Skelton ever happening - for my I would rather see one of them try and crack the world scene and hope we can have more than just a decent domestic fight, but a fight with global significance.jameswilson wrote:I dunno about best Super Feather in the country, I see Gomez as that, but I think Johanneson as the second best and would like to see him fight for the British title, then defend against the likes of Docherty and the rest. Incidently, does anybody know Johansson official UK ranking, with Docherty fighting for the EBU title, he could get involved anyway.
Yeah Stu he is quiet out of the ring but I don't really see this as a bad thing as many boxing fans are tired of the bigmouths who do little... it makes a nice change to see someone who likes to do there talking in the ring and as a fighter Johansson is very charismatic. I really feel that if he is moved right and gets some exposure Johansson could have a really good future.stujones wrote:Yeah Silkov, I can see your point and thats what I was trying to make. Yeah. I think that Johanneson will relinquish the WBF belt soon. He has beaten Carl Greaves so surely he must be among the top3 in line for the British belt.stujones wrote:James, firstly I cannot see Arthur wanting to fight Johansson at this stage because he could be involved in the British title fight scene (so why risk this position). I think Johannsen would beat beat Gomez, I not convinced about Gomez's chin and I think Carl would KO him. Carl has some nice punches and combo's, he looks pretty classy when he puts his punches together. I can't believe he didn't break his hands on his last opponents face he was hitting him so often and so hard.
Don't get me wrong in two of his three outings I have seen I was impressed, but his defence vs Ferrans was ordinary at best. He was taking most things.silkov wrote:I agree, I think Carl would have too much for Gomez... he has better punch variety and slips punches better and is also the freasher fighter... it'd be a great fight while it lasted but I can see Johansson winning in about 6 or 7 rounds.... 8)
I'm still not convinced that Michael Gomez is any better than the fighter on the verge of the world title shot a few years ago - I still think that Arthur was overhyped and Juuko was just so shot (although no fault of Gomez's). Docherty has improved an awful lot and he is the guy who I would tip to become Number 1 eventually, that is providing Lear doesn't fully recover.

While i'm also impressed with what i've seen from Johanneson so far, i think it's a little premature to say he'll beat Gomez. IMO, Carl hasn't been in with anyone close to Gomez in terms of ability. It's a fight that i'd like to see, but i'm not convinced that Carl would be able to cope with the pressure that Gomez would put on him. I'd also be interested to see what happens if Gomez manages to land a couple of decent shots, i just haven't seen enough to be totally convinced about Carl's chin.

Re: Carl Johannson.
Courtney Fry has moved far too slow - he turned pro the same night yet has had 7-8 fights. Put him in with ANdrew Lowe or Matthew Barney (both are good technicians with a light punch so wont blow Fry away) and see what happens. I quesiton whether he has the time or momentum to go as far as his AMATUER pedigree suggests.jameswilson wrote:Johanneson is promoted by A-Force. Re: Carl Johannson.
Fry has stated his intent to fight for the English Light-Heavyweight title in his next 2 fights. I think he can do OK. English title then onwards and upwards. Wont go far above British title level tho.DavidPayne wrote:Courtney Fry has moved far too slow - he turned pro the same night yet has had 7-8 fights.
