Q&A Stephen “Swifty” Smith
One of the best young prospects in Britain currently is Liverpool’s very own Stephen Smith 6-0(5). Smith comes from a boxing background, his three brothers are also fighters. He was a standout amateur who won several titles highlighted with a gold medal in the 2006 Commonwealth games, he also represented his country in the 2007 World Championships though lost a tight decision in the opening round. When he failed to qualify for 2008 Olympics he opted to punch for pay and signed pro forms with allegedly’s Sports Network. Whilst he may not be as celebrated as some of the fighters who qualified for the Olympics he’s every bit as talented and will look to make his mark on the Featherweight division. Here’s what the 23 year old had to say

Anson Wainwright - You’re and up and coming British fighter 6-0(5) when will you be back in action next?
Stephen Smith - I am back in action next in Belfast on the 15th May, on the undercard to Martin Rogan vs Sam Sexton, which should be a good bill.

Anson Wainwright - You’re listed as a Featherweight though you’ve fought all your pro career above 9 stone, will you be able to get to that weight for a title opportunity or are you looking to the Super featherweight division?
Stephen Smith - Yes I am a featherweight and can/will do feather when I get to a title fight. I will do feather before then to.

Anson Wainwright - You’re from a boxing background with two of your brothers also fighting professionally, your elder brother Paul Smith at Super Middleweight 26-1(15) & younger brother Liam Smith 3-0(1) at Welterweight. How did you get into Boxing though?
Stephen Smith - We have another brother boxing too, Callum, he is the youngest of the 4 of us. He is still amateur yet but is a two time National Champion himself. I got into boxing through my elder brother boxing really. We used to live across the road from the Rotunda ABC in Liverpool, an Paul went in there one day with his mates and joined, an so I just followed on. Then after me, my two younger brothers did likewise.

Anson Wainwright - What do you like to do away from Boxing?
Stephen Smith - Like spending time with my family and mates. Like playing pool and following the mighty reds (Liverpool Football Club)

Anson Wainwright - You had a very successful amateur career. What can you tell us about this, what titles did you win & what was your final record?
Stephen Smith - I ended up having 132 fights in all, i think i won about 110. I won 9 National titles (Schools, Juniors, NABC’s and Seniors), 2 Four Nations Gold’s, Won a few multi Nations Golds, Won a European Junior Bronze Medal, a European Senior Bronze and Won Gold in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Anson Wainwright - How do you think will win when Appleby & Lindsay fight for the British Featherweight title?
Stephen Smith - Not too sure, should be a good one. I thought Lindsay struggled when he fought my mate Derry Matthews and was losing that fight, an think Appleby will try to apply similar tactics being tall like Derry. But Lindsay seems clever and will have learned from that fight so it should be good to see how it unfolds.

Anson Wainwright - How far do you think you are from fighting one of these guys?
Stephen Smith - In terms of ability, I don’t feel i’m far away at all. But obviously in terms of experience, I need to get a few more rounds under my belt. Get a few 8 - 10 rounder’s in.

Anson Wainwright - What is your ambition in Boxing?
Stephen Smith - My ambition in boxing is to become a World Champion.

Anson Wainwright - Finally do you have a message for boxing fans?
Stephen Smith - Hope everyone has enjoying watching my career so far. Keep following the Smith brothers coz there is plenty more to come.

this is the amateur star that went off the radar with being unlucky not to go beijing.he has been the real suprise package for me,he's been pro abit longer... but on his debut he looked the part, & has maintained it.id pay to watch this lad gladly.

I'd give him one thing he's made a very good start. I hope he can get amongst Appleby-Linday the 3 of them could make it very interesting at Featherweight.

aye, true, I've said this before though, Smith looked much more polished overall in his second fight than Appleby in his 4th or 5th the first time i saw him.

Very much the Boxing family too. Anyone know how good his other brothers are (Liam & Callum)? Seems like elder brother Paul could fight for the British title.
