is this the reason amir khan moved to 140???

Post by boxerbob »

he is now the WBO lightweight number 1 contender

he will have to fight either marquez or the no.2 contender katsidis , both have the power to basically end amir top flight career.

why move now when you are the number 1 contender????

Top Marks Bob.....

If he stays and fights Marquez, he gets hammered and it's all finished and Katsidis is a massive risk aswell

Marquez will never fight Khan. Marquez has been promised a fight against the Hatton-Pacquiao winner and the only other fight that would interest him would be against Mayweather. Any of those fights will bet him towards $8million. A fight with Khan wold probably earn him about $1million and with a 14-year age gap, it represents a risky fight.

Marquez will also hold on to the title until he has to defend it, which could be 12 months away. If Khan became a voluntary defence, Golden Boy could insist on options on Khan which, considering they tried to tap him up last year, would represent terrible business for Warren.

My problem with the original point, is that it is the same old typical accusation of underhand dealing that always gets pushed up as "insight" on here. But boxing isn't that difficult to understand. Warren's job is to get the best fight for his guy. Golden Boy - who also promote Katsidis - want the best deal for their guy. The problem is on here that, Warren doing his job is regarded as sneaky and ducking, whereas Golden Boy pushing for a near monopoly of the lightweight division is seen as fair.

Does anyone think the best fight for Khan, who is 22 and two fights after being knocked out, is to face Marquez? That is madness and only pushed forward by people who are desperate to see him get knocked out and are seemingly upset that he has been able to comeback from the Prescott defeat.

Me, on the other hand, I support British boxing. I want to see British boxers do well. When Khan boxes, British boxing gets a lot of coverage, a lot of boxers on the bill get work, lots of people talk about and watch British boxing. I think that's a good thing.

Khan would be mad fighting JMM because he would take a pritty big beating.

Word from America is Mayweather is in talks with JMM / GBP but both sides want a different weight which the fight would take place under

No because he doesn't have to fight for the WBO title, he could fight for WBA Normal (Moses), Vacant IBF titles. Both would likely be allot better than

A move to 140lbs makes Khan no longer drained at 135 and sets up a blockbuster with Hatton worth 10s of millions

If Khan gets past Kotelnik (Which he won't anyway) Frank should be itching to make that fight with Hatton and cash out. Only problem is, he won't be willing to give Hatton a payday, there's nothing in it for Hatton and Ricky wouldn't get near as much as he did vs Pac.

But one that he would be the sky-high favourite to win, or do you think Marquez is not yet ready to take the risk of a fight versus Amir? If so, when will Marquez be ready to scale that peak? :TU:

Marquez is looking to cash in on a mega fight now. Any fight is a risky fight and should he lose (Khan is young and quick) he would blow his mega payday. Over the history of the sport, lots of big money fights have been blown because they took a supposedly easy warm-up fight - look at Don Curry, who was lined up to fight Hagler, facing Honeyghan.

The problem is everyone is looking at this from Khan's point of view. What's Marquez's motivation for taking the fight? He will know little about Khan other than he is potentially chinny, but he is 14 years younger, hungry, very quick, a lot taller and Freddie Roach has been saying lots of good things about him. Unlike this chat forum, Marquez's life is unlikely to be dominated by a desire to see Khan get beaten and unlike many others in the lightweight division, he doesn't need Khan to make his name or fortune.

Quite so. I rather think JMM's days & nights are all concentrated on a certain other lightweight trained by Freddie Roach.

I'm not sure he'd really be bothered with Amir; Marquez is obsessed -- almost unhealthily so -- with beating Manny Pacquiao.

First of all
gobbles wrote: should he lose (Khan is young and quick)
lol.

Secondly, it's pretty obvious to everyone in this discussion that Marquez has no reason to fight Khan. This makes things easy for Warren who can always claim Marquez never wanted the fight. In reality though, Marquez is not a huge draw. He is certainly biddable, and Khan is an easy win for him even if it is just a biding time fight before another big one. This was basically Barrera's premise for taking the Khan fight.

My problem is with Khan being gifted a world title shot when, as you rightly say, only two fights again he was sparkoed.

Warren is doing his job, as is golden boy, what pisses me off is the hype surrounding Khan, who frankly hasn't acheived shite all as a professional.

Fair enough, it puts bums on seats, but just because that is so, doesn't mean I'm going to applaud it.

Oh, and I'm not clamouring for Khan to fight Marquez, he ain't anywhere near ready for Marquez.

However, I'm also not clamouring for Khan to be elevated to a world title challenger, when his best result was what should have been a No Contest against Barrera. And please, don't insult my intelligence by saying that the doctor shouldn't have stopped the fight earlier.

I see your point with this however I don't think Khans career thus far has been particularly good for British boxings' image. Sure, British boxing gets in the limelight but when I talk to colleagues from the USA they are always quick to point out that our best fighters are usually overhyped and overprotected. The opinion I've always had from over the pond is that Khan's career is something of a joke, a guy with mass hype who is now knocking on the door of a world title shot without actually earning it. It's almost blatantly obvious that Khan's career so far has been about the fastest easiest route to make lots of money and I personally think that, considering he is touted as one of our better prospects, is not a great image for the world to have of British boxing.

it's a shame he isn't gonna be fighting murray or thaxton.

but with the fighters being with different promoters it always looked unlikely.

i wanted to see a katsidis fight.

but aside from that this is an interesting fight.

in this day and age of multiple titles it's not such a disgrace he's getting a chance.

we all know who the real champions are. :TU:

boxings image is beyond the point where it can be saved anyway ffs.

I'd have loved to see Khan vs Katsidis. What a fight that could have been! I actually think Khan would have won it, but if he'd been caught by even 1-2 Katsidis bombs it would have been lights out.

I think Katsidis would smash Khan to pieces. It'll only take one half decent shot from Katsidis and it'll be all over. I can't see Khan staying out of harms way long enough.

I think Hatton will retire once he gets beat by Manny anyway.

Thaxton Vs Khan was nearly on. It went to purse bids for the fight and Amir/Warren pulled out. Didn't Khan get a 10 month ban from being able to fight for the British Lightweight title because of it?

What? That's a match between the two very biggest names in British boxing, two guys who even your grandma knows, which would fill a football stadium anywhere in the country and would likely set a UK PPV record. It would probably also be a US PPV too, with Hatton an A-lister over there and Khan well known to knowledgeable boxing fans. The only thing missing in terms of revenue generated is a casino site fee.

Of course it would be huge in the UK but no way would it be a US ppv, and I hardly think Hatton would get more than he is getting vs Pac. Plus it means more to Warren, at this stage at least, to avoid another embarassing defeat in his skewed logic. Hatton has all the tools and particularly the style to dispatch of Amir in one or two rounds.

Frank will want to wait until the last possible moment to make this IMO - not because he wants Hatton to have faded (although that would be ideal for him) but because he can milk a few more unsuspecting Brits in yet more carefully chosen ones. He's in for a rude awakening when Kotelnik spoils the party.

Anyway, i don't even see a point where Hatton would even want to take the fight unless he gets silly money. He's after big fights now, and Khan is not a respected or even hugely well known name in the US.

Problem is Riddick, your ridiculous hatred of Khan is clouding your judgement.

The last time Hatton stopped an opponent inside two (or 3 for that matter) was 7 years ago. I think most people would believe that Khan was better than Stephen Smith.

It's all about the combination of the fighters, the match itself. I'm not saying it IS the best British match out there, but it certainly has the potential to be the biggest. Hatton alone would bring in six figures' worth of PPV regardless of the opponent, and more so when it's against a big name. Khan as you say is not a huge PPV star on his own, but against Hatton you can double or triple whatever he's pulled in so far. Both boxers have enormous and loyal fan bases. Put those together and then add on top a large number of people who wouldn't normally get a Hatton or Khan PPV but would undoubtedly get a Hatton versus Khan PPV. It's all about the star power.
