Michigan Golden Gloves
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Am I missing something or did Stacy Harrington lose? Who did he lose to? Jarvis Edwards again?
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
No, Stacy didn't enter the tournament.glo54 wrote:Am I missing something or did Stacy Harrington lose? Who did he lose to? Jarvis Edwards again?

Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Dennis - have you seen Antwon Herndon Box - has he been competing much in Michigan. he boxed at me gym the past 3 yrs. - dad sent him back to Mi.
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
I didn't see his first bout in the West MI GG which he won. In the W MI GG finals he lost to Jarvis Edwards. I only saw bits and pieces as I was getting my son Jordan ready for his bout. I will try to watch Antwon's bout on Friday. He boxes Vernon Washington from Saginaw.atlanta coach wrote:Dennis - have you seen Antwon Herndon Box - has he been competing much in Michigan. he boxed at me gym the past 3 yrs. - dad sent him back to Mi.

Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Dennis - how is he still boxing in the tournament if he lost?
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
The West MI GG tourney and the East MI GG tourney each send two guys to the Michigan GG State Tourney. Typically, the champ and runner-up of the local tourneys advance to the state tourney, however, sometimes due to DQ's, failures to compete, medical reasons, RSC-H suspensions, etc., an alternate may be sent to the state tourney. In the case of Antwon Herndon, he was the runner-up so he advances to the state tourney. It is a unique situation that can be quite entertaining. Quite often, the 2 East guys or the 2 West guys will both win and have a rematch of their local finals in the state championship bout. Sometimes the guy that lost the first time wins the second bout.atlanta coach wrote:Dennis - how is he still boxing in the tournament if he lost?

Dennis- Did you have your golden Gloves tonight? Did u see antwon fight?
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Yes, I saw him box Vernon Washingtn in the semi-finals. Antwon looked good, but Vernon won the fight. Tonight Vernon beat Jarvis Edwards in a close decision to win the state title. Jarvis had defeated Antwon for the West MI GG title 3 weeks ago.atlanta coach wrote:Dennis- Did you have your golden Gloves tonight? Did u see antwon fight?
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Any other results from the Michigan GG?
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
MI Golden Gloves Champions:
119-Ernie Garza, defending Nat'l GG Champ, won by RSC-2 (1:16)
125-Ryan Schmidt won by decision
132-Raeese Aleem was uncontested champ
141-Johnny Garcia won by unanimous decision
152-Jose Bernal won by RSCH-3
165-Brandon Larvadain won by won by decision
178-Vernon Washington won by close decision, 4-1
201-Jordan Shimmell won by RSC-2 (0:45)
201+-Kyle McNutt won by decision
This is a very good team. Ernie Garza and Jordan Shimmell are going to the NGG for the 4th straight year. Ryan Schmidt is going for the 5th time in the last 8 years. Raeese Aleem is going for the 2nd time in the last 3 years. Johnny Garcia is going for the second straight year as is Jose Bernal and Kyle Mcnutt. Brandon Larvadain is going to the NGG for the first time, but he won the Ringside tournament last year. Vernon Washington is going for the first time, but he lost a 3-2 split in the state finals last year at 165 and lost a 5-0 decision to my son Jordan two years ago in the state finals at 201. I think he finally found his weight class -178. Hopefully this team performs up to their abilities and a bunch of the guys go deep into the tourney and a couple of them bring home national titles.

Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Dennis, how old is Jordan? How has he done in the previous years (I know that he lost to Lewis last year but what about the previous NGG)? Finally, do you think that the new format of 3 Rds will be an advantage for him this year?Dennis wrote:MI Golden Gloves Champions:

Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Seems like a nice team....Good luck.
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Jordan is 20. He has been at the NGG ever since he was old enough (17). In 2006 he lost a 3-2 split in the finals to Eric Fields who was the defending NGG champ. Fields also won the Golden Boy award for the second straight year. In 2007 Jordan won the Midwestern Trials, but injured his arm and wasn't 100% for the NGG and lost a split decision in his first bout. In 2008 Jordan lost a 3-2 split in the semi-finals to Craig Lewis who won the tourney. I don't think the new format (old format?? - it is gone full circle to what we used to have) of 3x3 will make that much of a difference. 3x3's or 4x2's I don't really care. Jordan thinks well on his own so being in the ring longer without coming back to the corner won't affect him as much as some boxers so it might be an advantage. He has only boxed a few times with the 3x3's, but so far is undefeated with the format.DCAmateurBoxing wrote:Dennis, how old is Jordan? Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
I seen all three fights against those two at the 2007 empire games gave him a hard left hand & a standing eight count and 2008 golden gloves semi finals and the 2008 Metropolitan Championships he almost knocked chazz out and the only fight that was close "all he could handle" was Golden gloves semi 3-2 decision but pagan beat him fair and square each time no doubt about it but Chazz is a good fighter at 125 he will do his thing.....Unit wrote:keep an eye out on my boy chazz mcdowell now currently attending NMU......he has dropped back to 125 ilb....gonna be hard to beat...relentless stalker and throws punches in bunches....gave shemuel pagan all he could handle 2 out of the 3 times they fought....but the last time pagan was too strong and the weight difference showed
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
BTW the NMU boxers compete in the Wisconsin GG or their home state GG franchise.
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
How do you guys feel this crop of MI fighters will do in the next round of the tournament?
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
I would love to see the team finish in the top 3 of all the franchises and have 2 national champs.
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
is there a website that will post the brackets with all the fighters in Salt Lake City? and results as the fights happen?

Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Dennis.....How does Detroit's team stack up to the Team Michigan?
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Try USA Boxing's website too. They are usually good about posting results quickly.Jalex wrote:is there a website that will post the brackets with all the fighters in Salt Lake City? and results as the fights happen?
Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
Detroit team and michigan team both have certain weight classes with more experenced. My opion
119 James Smith vs Ernie Gaza James have won the last two of three fighs
125 Roberto F. and RYAN Smicht, would be a good rematch, smich won in the 08 LBC's
132 Erick Delon vs Raseem ? Ercik is much better winning J.O and silver glove gold.
141 JOnny Garcia vs Andry Stankvich Jonny is stronger and a big banger.
152 Leandre White vs Hose Beneal, Leandre would box the stronger Jose. White have not lost a state tournament.
165 J'Leon Love vs. Brandon, J Love have not lost in the states ether and have beat brandon twice, 07 and 08 LBC;s
178 Dywane Williams vs vernon washigton, it would be a toss up. with vernon beatin jarvis i would go with him.
201 D. Banks vs Jordan would go to the vet jordan all day long.
201+ Craig Lewis vs Kyle McNutt will go to the 08 national GG champ craig lewis, who one beat kyle at 201.
It would be a nice show to watch if it could really happen.
by picks are
james smith
roberto F
Jonny garcia
Leandre White
J;leon Love
Vernon Washigton
Jordan Shimmell
Craig Lewis
thats a 5-3 win in my eyes for detroit.

Re: Michigan Golden Gloves
You forgot that Michigan GG is going to have 112-Tyler James. So even with your predictions it would be 5-4. That could very easily change to 4-5 for the Michigan GG. It would be a great battle between the two teams and I think you will see some of those matches at the Michigan LBC tourney in mid May.
