Mexican Roadsweepers?

Mexican Roadsweepers....the mere phrase conjures up images of some of brunos early opponents , any fond memories of best and worst?

The greatest were the Tijuana tumblers who came over to the Royal Albert Hall on a Duff/Barrett/Astaire bill and four Mexicans lasted best five rounds. Think it was late 70s or early 80s

I remember a Mexican heavyweight by the name of Juan Diaz coming over to fight Herbie Hide (I think it was Hide). He was small but built like the Michelin Man.
I swear it was the same Juan Diaz who had licked Charlie Magri at flyweight years earlier and then never stopped celebrating.

The best one I can remember was not a Mexican roadsweeper, but a yankee cabbage called Chuck Gardner. He fought Bruno and was knocked out after about 30 seconds by a glancing jab. Truly pathetic.

Couple of early opponents of Bruno's were not really road sweepers, his 3rd one was Abdul Muhaymin, who Bruno knocked out in a 1 round, that was in 1982. Now Abdul would go on to take boxers Oliver McCall and Tony Tucker the distance , he also took a host of good punchers the distance. In fact Abdul was next stopped by light punching Cley-Bey in 1998!

Ronald Gibbs who was the 4th opponent of Bruno's, he had just beaten Mark Wills twice on points, and gone the distance with Mike Jasmeson.

Tony Moore opponent 5, had only been stopped 4 times before in 25 losses, Bruno did the trick in 2 rounds

yeah can't deny that one, that was awful, at least Bruno looked just embarressed.

Flint, Boza, Green and Magri, in 1980. All of the tumblers tumbled in two rounds. As usual, Duff blamed someone else in his biography: Los Angeles agent Don Chargin.

Cheers for that I guessed Green and Magri, but not Jimmy Flint and Boza. wasn't Chargin close to Mike Barrett

Chargin worked with the Cartel a lot (especially with Duff in the States) and just made a mistake with the tumblers he sent over. Let us face it, all the British fighters could whack.
Chargin is best remembered for offering WBC super-featherweight champion Bobby Chacon $1 million to defend against Hector Camacho in the States in 1983. Don King offered Chacon $450,000. When Chacon naturally accepted the $1 million offer, the WBC stripped Bobby of the title.
King and Jose Sulaiman strike again.

If I remember rightly Haugen condemned many of Chavez's opponents as 'mexican taxi drivers' that insult, along with other slights that Haugen threw out in an attempt to hype the fight, saw Chavez administer one of the cruelest beatings for many a year.

It was painful to watch.

Chuck Gardner actually beath MIke Tyson and Charles Atlas. Not many can claim that even if they are not the big name ones.

He did beat the genuine Jimmy Young though, quite a shocker.
