Mario
Miranda too savvy for Tibbs.
At 44 years of age and a long bus ride past his prime, boxer turned trainer Mario Miranda proved too much for Billy Tibbs scoring a 4 round unanimous decision win, his second over Tibbs in the last 12 months. Fighting well above the weight of his featherweight days, Miranda looked soft at 165 but the tools that made him the #1 ranked fighter in the featherweight division in the 80's were still evident. Right for the oppening bell, Miranda used his jab to keep the young fighter off him. Whenever Tibbs closed the gap, Miranda tossed in a sneaky right to discourage Tibbs. For his efforts, Tibbs, 6-13-1, didn't fold and managed to test the chin of the aged fighter on several occasions but Miranda just shook them off and went right back to jabbing and double jabbing. Being 44 years of age does have it's drawbacks and that showed in the form of exhaustion. Miranda, 36-3-2, was sucking air to start round 3. Tibbs saw this and began to apply more pressure of the Columbian. Timely clinches allowed Miranda to survive the round and to get his second wind. Bouncing on his toes, Miranda began to school Tibbs on the art of hit and not be hit. While his punches lacked the power to hurt the Winnipeg fighter, Miranda seemed content to pile up the points as the round drew to a close. All 3 judges scored the fight for Miranda 39-37 and 40-36 (twice).
