Query on a name

Post by smallick »

Hey to one and all, just a quick question. I am researching my family tree and have found a record that I'm interested in. The name given is "Young Mallick". Is the "Young" because they were under a certain age and if so what was that age. I have found 3 records on another site(prewarboxing.co.uk) Frank Mallick, Fred Mallick and also a Young Mallick all fighting in 1920-30's, all fought in Abertridwr which was near to where they were living and I think this Young Mallick could be my grandfather.

So what I really want to know is why they were called "Young" there seems to quite a few "youngs" in the records.

Many thanks in advance

Sorry for the delay, it is a difficult question and required a deal of thought. Anyway 'Young' is a relative term, perhaps best defined as 'not old'.

There were also plenty of fighters with the same names or even 2nd generation fighters with exactly the same name. So "young" was prefixed to identify them. Now everyone has an alias "Iron" Mike Tyson for example.

A lot of boxers took the name "Young" as homage to a popular boxer of the same name. Or they may have had an ethnic (non-Anglo Saxon) sounding name, that they wanted/needed to change from. It is true as well that many of these boxers were really "young", and they wanted to be associated with a term that reminded people of all the positive aspects associated with youth.
