Indiana Glolden Gloves, What A Joke.....

Post by primp »

On Thursday me and a couple of friends out of Anderson, Indiana, went to Indianapolis and took in the Indiana Golden Gloves. The had a few interesting matches, not much talent the rest of the nation should be too concerned about. John Cougar Mellencamps son was a big rave, but he's average at best. There's a kid at 165, Marcus Chapman, that may make some noise but that's about it. Then at 178, the Indiana Golden Boy, Ray Lucies ( 3 time State Champ at 165 ) entered the ring against an up and coming 17 yr old, Wynten Ellis, a first timer. This kid stung Lucies, and Luscies started running. He actually turned his back and ran. The kid would close in on Lucies and Lucies would hold him like he was on his way to Iraq. Ellis landed a few shots that rocked Lucies and Lucies would take off again. This went on for 3 rounds.

Decision Lucies 5-0. The place exploded. I looked at one partners and he said, " maybe, they read it wrong ".
While we were standing outside and people were pouring out, Montell Griffin ( former light heavy weight champ ) emerged...Cursing, evidently he works with this kid. I introduced myself and told him I had seen a few of his fights on TV, and my opinion of the fight.
This was very bad for amatuer boxing.

I was there, and it wasn't about Lucies winning. Lucies couldn't beat that kid. It was a protest.
That Ellis kid is out of Gary, Ind.. Gary's region is Chicago. This kid beat Lucies soundly in December. The Pres. of Indiana's Amatuer Boxing Federation asked the kid's father if he would let Wynten participate in Indiana's Golden Gloves. The kid had the best shot at bringing a national title back to Indiana. Sarge Johnson and some of the other gyms protested this kid coming down to Indianapolis to fight in the Golden Gloves. A waiver was given by Chicago, and the kid was entered in Indiana. On April 6, the kid out of Rock'em Sock'em refused to fight him, so he won by forfeit, so in the title fight all Lucies had to do is get in the ring to avoid a forfeit, and survive 3 rounds. So Lucies ran for 3 rounds. He may have thrown 3 or 4 scoring punches. It's a shame this kid was caught in the middle of a dispute, but that's what happened. If Lucies had gotten knocked out, they would have found a way to disqualify Ellis. What can you do?

I was there too. I thought Wynten Ellis got ripped off too. The reason he got a walkover on April 6 was because the kid from Rock'em Sock'em was injured a while back and wasn't able to train for the fight. I thought Lucies fought a smart fight, the best he could, but I didn't think it was enough. I feel bad for Ellis.
I was there with some other people though, who genuinely thought Lucies outboxed him. I still agree with you though...Ellis clearly won in my view.

I can't say Lucies fought a smart fight, cause Lucies wouldn't fight. I feel sorry for the kid, cause he know he won. Lucies came over Ellis' corner after the fight and said, "I think my ribs might be broke."

I said Lucies fought a smart fight because he moved so much and was giving a lot of angles. He obviously couldn't be successful slugging with the other kid. But I see your point too. Lucies didn't throw many punches.

Exactly, how can you win a fight without throwing punches. If you read the earllier post. That decision was to send a message to the Indiana Amatuer Boxing Federation. "You don't tell us what to do in Indianapolis. " As far as Rock'em Sock'em, you know Ellis faught a Kid from Rock'em Sock'em, I believe it was in the Junior Golden Gloves 2 yrs. ago. It was stopped at .44 of the first round.

I didn't make it to the gloves but my friend's brother was fightin there. He has some fights on his camera. I seen this one. Disgraceful, Lucies wasn't punching just running and coverin up. My friend said the president of amatuer boxing in indiana appoligized to ellis for that decision. that was just wrong.

Anyone that thinks Lucies even scored had to be drunk and there was a lot of beer sold that night. You can not win a boxing match without boxing. That decision stunk to all hell and back.

Team Indiana is gonna get smoked. They screwed the only kid that had any shot, well maybe Chapman. Lucies will be a one and done as always. A easy victory for somebody on day one in Utah. Unbelievable.

IMO, the internet and video sharing will make officials and judges more accountable for their scoring. Especially for an advancing tournament. All you can do is tape the bouts, put them online for everyone to judge for themselves.

I know that it doesn't give you the same sense as being there (Mel) but it's better than explaining what happened with words, which is all we had in the past. One day, the technology will be readily available to give us the exact angle that the judges saw - so they will really be accountable.

Anyone have video of this bout?

What happened to Ray Stallings? Did he enter the Indiana GG? Is he still boxing?

Don't know if stallings fought or not. I believe the next fight was a walk-over, but couldn't hear who it was, because there was so much commotion after that decision. They had to enforce security on both levels of the Armory.

I heard a lot of the crowd booing but I didn't see any security after the decision. Like I said some of the people I was with truly thought that Lucies boxed well and deserved the win, but I'm still in agreement that Lucies got a gift.

Hey Dennis, yeah I started boxing again after about a year and a half off. I started my own gym and began training some guys with my coach but then wanted to again pursue a goal I set a long time ago to win the NGG. I won by walkover when Travis DePew didn't show up. Supposedly he hurt his shoulder.
Congratulations to you and Jordan on his stoppage win at the Michigan GG. How did your other son do (at 165) in the tourney?

They were running in when I was walking out. It was at the height of the Booing and the people screaming BS. Three ran upstairs and two ran down stairs while you were standing in the ring. I didn't know who you were, I knew they were trying to introduce someone.

Also LRSJ there is a number of things in the works locally and nationally about that decision. I know it can't be over turned, but they're trying to make this kid feel comfortable about fighting in the Indiana GG next year. But I think he'll fight out of Chicago. He would have won the Chicago GG this year..

LRSJ confused me at first, but then I remembered that you were a Junior like me. Did you use your middle name to avoid the hassle of having the same name as your Dad? As I know, it can get really confusing at times.

Thank you Ray. Congrats to you too. My other son Niall won two bouts in the tourney, the second one was a first round RSC. He then lost a decision to Brandon Larvadain in the West MI GG semi-finals. Brandon then went on to win the Michigan GG state title as I expected he would. Brandon is a good boxer and I believe that he can do well at the NGG.

We will see you in Salt Lake City. I'm sure there will be a few other familiar faces at 201.

What's going on little Strick. Your father and my uncle know each other. Did you see Chapman and Lucies last year? It's on youtube.com. I thought Chapman won, but they could argue because Lucies did fight. But what was so funning about that, they called Champman's style running, said the fight should have been in the middle of the ring. But it was cool for Lucies to turn his back and run......I don't believe Wynten will fight in Indiana GG again. But that's a loss for Indiana ..
