Norton-Ali series doco....when?

Post by Robinson »

It seems that with the scores of Ali doco's about the place,
the Norton series seems to be so neglected.

It seems that their is an obsession with his fights against Frazier
and Foreman.

I am curious why people think this is and also if they know of
any books or shows that cover the trilogy.

Thanks again guys

The third fight would be of particular interest.
That fight outdoors at Yankee stadium in New York City was sort of the end of an era in boxing.
The big outdoor fights in a Ballpark, two great fighters. Packed house warm night.
That was boxing from another time. A much more interesting time as far as Im concerrned.
Now its freakin fights in a casino somewhere with clowns at ringside flappin on a cellphone playing with the front of their underwear.
Kym, I wish you were around following boxing in the mid late seventies.
I know this period is of interest to you. You would have been in heaven.

And watching film of it and reading about it seems to lack
that reality that many here like yourself would have experienced,
which many of us will never know.

These 3 fights seem to almost be over looked alot considering
how Big they were and are.

In Oz most of our big fights are in RSL's which are (Returned Services
Leagues venues) these are big venues for concerts, or at Rugby clubs.
Going to an out door stadium event like that which Norton and Ali
had their 3rd meet in would be something else.

The fights lacked the tension as spectacles --- & the hype, pre-bout --- to reach the same heights as Ali's other affairs. They also weren't as high-stakes, for the most part. There were things on the line, don't get me wrong, but the title was at stake in only their last meeting, & their first was considered a near non-event until Norton won.

Still, these were good --- & unduly neglected --- battles. As a mental puzzle, Norton is probably Ali's most difficult career opponent, & that's saying something. Sure, Frazier was a more gruelling, physical challenge, & Foreman a more formidable obstacle to overcome, but Ali's mind was forever whirring when in the ring with Norton. It isn't as if Norton didn't have his own troubles with Ali, either, adding to the interest.

They should make a documentary on this. I also think, though I will be called a 'sadist' by some, they should make a documentary showing not only the rise and reign of Muhammad Ali, but the downside as well. Only on 'SportsCentury' did they ever show the Ali-Holmes fight. Hell RINGSIDE goes no further than the Thrilla in Manila. There was alot of good fights following that time, like Ali-Shavers, Norton-Ali 3, and the Ali-Spinks bouts. Ali done ALOT in that time period, exhibitions, wrestling antics, movies, etc. It wasnt all a bad time period for him.
