One for the historians here:

When was the last time a Welshman won the Commonwealth Lightweight title?

I don't know, which is why I am asking.

Are you sure you don't know and this is just a thread to say that..

You will be the first welshman to win since Freddie Welsh in 1912? (I Think!)

Of course also the first commonwealth champion to be sponsored by British Boxing.net!!!

The great Ronnie James held the title from 1944 to 1947.

The British title, ben. Didn't know much about him so just looked him up. Must have been one tough hombre. Of his 16 losses, 5 came by DQ! Only stopped twice in 127 fights, both coming at the end of his career, one of them by all-time great Ike Williams.

According to Hugman's 1999 yearbook, James held the Commonwealth title, though editions before that state otherwise.

Yes, it says it in the latest one too but in other books I have it doesn't mention it. One for Statto methinks!

I wonder if all Hugman Yearbooks since 1999 say he is Commonwealth champ. If so, then Hugman must have uncovered something. I've checked the 1999 one - but have none of his yearbooks since.

NO HE IS A L-WEIGHT, but never fought for it, went european then IBO.

I remember the late Mervyn Bennett (who Dean has fought) was scheduled to fight for it after upsetting the then highly rated Gareth Jordan. However, he lost to Karl Taylor which scuppered him.

The 2001 edition agrees with your 1999 edition mate.
