BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
Both our beloved British boxing magazines will hit big milestones this year, with Boxing Monthly turning 20 next month and Boxing News reaching an amazing 100 years old in September.
Both anniversaries - and especially BN's century - are outstanding achievements, especially when you consider they are largely niche publications and that print media as a whole is on the slide. Consider also that KO in the US recently folded.
Congratulations to all the staff and contributors to both magazines, and may they both continue for many more years to come.

It should be celebrated purely on the basis that Smash HIts only lasted about 20 years. With the competition of the Internet, that's pretty impressive.Terry D wrote:I gave up on BN a while ago, but still enjoy my monthly delivery of BM. I won't jump around singing happy birthday, they are only mags after all, but it is nice to see them making a success out of the sport. Long may it continue.
I would rather flick my own ring than flick through The Ring, 'The Bible of boxing', yep, archaic, out-of-touch and ran by a narcissists dream team.
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
With established mainstream mags like Arena and Maxim UK folding, as others in the thread have said, their continued existence is v impressive.
I buy every issue of both. BM in particular has come on leaps and bounds over the last year or so

Whilst I buy both, I do really enjoy the in depth features of BM. Its a shame its layout and design isn't as good as BN's, which I add is an excellent weekly publication.
Long may both continue.

BM was on it's arse before I turned it around four years ago with my UK puff pieces.chinny wrote:With established mainstream mags like Arena and Maxim UK folding, as others in the thread have said, their continued existence is v impressive.

I've had a bit of a sabbatical due to the Editor blanking me at ringside for Froch-Pascal.
But I'll be back soon.
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
was gonna say Ian I hadnt seen any pieces by you in there recently.
Have to say I enjoy reading BM got a years subsciption out here in Barbados, its great reading by the pool / beach witha an extra old and coke on a sat arvo.
Aaaah tuff life. ;;-)
though realistically Im knee deep in shit changing nappies / placating a 3 month old, going shopping and playing footie with the 6 year old.
But I do get the odd half hour alone with a mag...but thats another story.

Boxing Snooze is edited by the best fan in the world, as opposed to the best writer in the world.

Have never read BM it was enough effort trying to get a weekly copy of BN from local newsagent. I love BN it reminds me of being a kid getting my 90 minutes mag. I look forward to picking it up on way home from work on a fri.
might have to get involved with BM. How much is it? How does it differ to BN?

Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
I remember buying the first BM. I think it had Gary Jacobs on the cover.
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
Nope it has Mike Tyson on the cover.nobby_nobbins wrote:I remember buying the first BM. I think it had Gary Jacobs on the cover.
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
I have been taking BN since the fiftys & still have most of them it's the best up to date boxing mag, over the years I have taken all the boxing mags but now it's just BN I gave up on all the others as the fight reports are always a month behind through necessity but as the they say on the front of the BN" every punch every fight every week"

Lol yep, certainly reeks of that! "Bennie", I suppose you held these opinions when Claude was giving you regular work?dbflex wrote:No agenda there?bennie wrote:Boxing Snooze is edited by the best fan in the world, as opposed to the best writer in the world.

Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
Oh for sure I did. A stinking 'writer' is a stinking writer. Abrams' tripe is actually an insult to the people who have to read it. Tony and I winced at his efforts while we were there. Remember, we learned our trade under the great Harry Mullan and the great Tim Mo (once nominated for the Booker Prize), and then along came Claude Abrams. The difference in ability made you either laugh or cry.oliverfennell wrote:Lol yep, certainly reeks of that! Everyone in the trade knows that Bob Mee should be editor of Boxing News, but Bob is too big for it.
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
Do u still read bn regularly bennie? Are we all tripe in ur opinion or is it just claude? Always good to get constructive feedback.
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
Bob Mee is a great feller, super, super knowledgeable and bloody good writer to boot.
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
Big fan of Bob Mee. Won't have a word against BN or BM. I still get a semi-on when either comes through the door.
Flexen!!! When are you doing 60-seconds with Michael Hunter? Hartlepool's finest is incandescent with rage at your inability to bell him.

Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
Its not an inability lol. Its not like my big sausage fingers fail miserably to operate the telephone! We do them just b4 they fight so when is he out next?
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
I cannot read anything in Boxing News that has not been subbed by Tony first (almost rewritten in Claude's case, it was that poor). That was Tony's job as a properly trained sub-editor who worked his way up under the late, great Mullan amd Graham Houston (and several other newspaper pros) and wound up at the Daily Express subbing the work of James Lawton and company - prior to joining the whining amateurs at BN again after Mullan and Houston had departed.dbflex wrote:Do u still read bn regularly bennie? Tony soon realized he had made a huge mistake linking up with 'fans' who think they are journalists, notably the glum, unresponsive, talentless Abrams - none of them know how it works at the top. Tony still loves boxing and now has his own boxing page at the Express and Star in the Mids (circulation 325,000) and I help him.
By the way, when staff at Boxing News Reach the age of 40, on a decent wage, they find themselves squeezed out for young monkeys who will accept peanuts just to get in there. It's a Boxing News ploy used for generations. Be aware of that because it will happen to you one day, son. Incidentally, some people seem be under the misapprehension that I was also forced out by Claude. As soon as Tony went, I went. No regrets, no lament. I didn't care.
Re: BN 100 years old and BM 20 years old
I don't care about polotics I love both mags.
Well done!
