What are we to make of Roach's supreme confidence?

Post by ALI »

Is it hype, the psyche effect, or a trainer who knows his sh*t and is making a genuine call?
"You know how Manny usually wears white shorts. I already told Manny to wear red shorts that night. There’s going to be a lot of blood, and it won’t be from Manny," said the WildCard Boxing Club boss, who had predicted a 3-round KO for his prized ward."
Red shorts, 3 round KO....... he's just hyping the fight and attempting to syche Hatton out and give Manny an edge, right?

Roach usually does a good job of talking up Pacquio before his fights and he's known for playing his part in these big promotions. We know he's not shy about airing his views but he's really went to town this time around. I have a huge amount of respect for Roach and when he talks about any boxer i listen. Its normal for fighters and their camps to try and psyche the other out, blabbering on about how easy the victory will be etc and i know Roach is not shy when it comes to this part of the game. But its not normal for him to predict such an easy, quick victory. This time around something tells me that he has belief in what he's saying, that he really believes Pacquio can and will do a number on the Hitman.

What do others make of Roach's bold predictions for this fight. Is he just having a laugh or does he really see an easy night for Pacquio? And could you give a monkey's either way :D

Worth quoting is Hatton's reply to Adam Smith when asked "what do you make of Freddie Roach's predicition that Pacquio will knock you out inside 3 rounds?"

Hatton replied "he's got the rounds right!" :DD

Pacquiao's worn red shorts plenty of times before. Roach is perhaps trying to get Hatton too hyped up and lose control of his aggression when in the ring. Try and get him just to bull forward and forget all the things Floyd Snr has been teaching him. Not sure it's gonna work though.

The southpaw stance and speed will cause Ricky to ship some sloppy rounds, before he steam-rolls the Pinoy.

I see pacs accuracy being a key factor if hatton walks on like he often does then pac will do plenty of damage , there is always the chance that hatton will return to his old ways

Just because Freddie Roach talks in a quiet unassuming fashion....so on and so forth  ...doesn't mean to say he hasn't been talking every bit as much trash talk shit as Floyd Snr does.

i think pacs in trouble to be honest. I know it was over 10 years ago but the way he fell to those bodyshots is alarming. Yes he has improved and moved up weight but when I think about it, who has he fought that has paid undue attention to his body. Nobody comes to mind for me.

Hatton extra strength wins this for me. Dont care though, as long as someone wins by stoppage.

It's the cringing from the bodyshots in the second Marquez fight that might hold up your theory a little better. He looked like he was going to break in half after taking a gancho a hidago in that 8th round; I bet JMM rues not wading in their after him when Pac was backing up & visibly distressed -- easier said than done mind! -- until his dying day.

As to the OP: Freddie also talks bullshit. It's just a slower, more pause-filled brand of bullshit. It's a top-flight sporting contest FFS.

Roach just plays the game and he usually plays it pretty well, says all the right things to draw up a bit of hype. No malice intended. :box:

I watched the new 24/7 last night and I must say that Roach comes across as a very nice guy. And with his illness, he doesn't half do well.

Top guy.

:TU:

But Hatton will KO Pacquiao to the body in ten 'Kostya Zoo rounds'.

I don't think Roach felt good about the disrepect he got from the Mayweathers last time and knows he lost the mind games there so he's upping the ante. Plus it all sells the fight. He does think Pac will win but he knows this is no easy fight and how Pac a 130lber last year will do against a BIG Strong 140lber is the real question

Well one of the only times' I've been dissapointed with Roach's corner work was in the Hopkins vs Calzaghe fight.... but thats one of the only times he wasn't surpremely confident.

I don't think he did such a good job with Hopkins but agree on the rest. Couldn't believe DLH dropped him ahead of the Forbes fight.

Thats what we were to make of Roach's supreme confidence!

The man reads a fight better than most and my gut feeling was he was'nt just playing up to the camera's. Roach (as much as one can theoretically imagine) new Pacquio had Hatton's number!
