They even teased at a Rhodes wrestling match (their next show is conveniently in Rhodes' home city) with a staredown with one of the wrestlers.

I seem to remember Steve Foster Sr having a small role in a WCW event in Manchester in the late 90s. He reffed a match and got involved in a bit of push-and-shove, or some such. Presumably a budget version copcyat of Tyson's involevment in Wrestlemania.

I was there for that, Foster got one hell of a reaction when he came out*

He was pencilled in for Danny Williams for some spurious WBF belt wasn't he? Or am I remembering it all wrong.

Is McCall fighting this weekend really? Anyway he's continuing to prove himself at a reasonable level. Witherspoon had been inactive for a long stretch and was in pretty poor form the last time he fought. Besides I trust the BBBC's judgement.

And yes, he was once due to fight Danny for the WBU strap; if memory serves it was set for the Tyson-Nielsen undercard.

Spoon had 2 mini revivals in the 90's. One which he really looked very good went on a winning run, fought on the Mercer vs Lewis undercard (against Gonzalez) - also beat former Cruiserweight champion Al "Ice" Cole - seemed set for a title shot , then he lost a controvesial one to Mercer. Then went on a bit of a losing run, then in 2001 beat the likes of Botice and Castillo - both thought of as prospects but then lost a close one to Barrett... This was the time Danny Williams was mooted.

I know I'm very sad for knowing this - my nephew is a wrestler is my defence - but the answer is yes, they were genuine. The WWF had signed a guy called "Dr Death" Steve Williams are were trying to get him over as a legitimate tough guy, and assumed that with some boxing training he was sure to beat everyone else. He got his arse handed back to him on a platter, as I recall!

Ah, Mr T v Roddy Piper... a boxing match for the purists there!

Speaking of which, Butterbean v Bart Gunn at Wrestlemania was a "for real" boxer v wrestler match and ended very quickly in a violent knockout win for the Bean.

Yes they were. Apparently Bart Gunn winning the tourney was a big upset. Poor guy got knocked into oblivion by 350lb of prime Bean for his reward, and then got immediately sacked afterwards by the WWF for his poor performance!

The WWF at the time had recently signed Dr Death Steve Williams, Williams was a reputed real life tough guy (and a former NCAA amateur wrestling finalist & American football player to boot). To get Williams over with the fans as a real life tough guy they introduced the brawl for all tournament, but pre tournament favourite Williams got knocked out by Bart Gunn (it was a bit of a fluke to be honest). Gunn went on to win the tournament but Vince and the boys weren’t happy that Gunn had ruined their plans for Williams so they threw him in against Butterbean (although if Gunn would have won I think its safe to say he would have received a major push).
