Hagler v Leonard - How do you score the fight?
Hagler v Leonard - How do you score the fight?
How do you score the fight? I really want to know people's honest thoughts on this.
I've just read a great book entitled 'Sorcery at Caesars'...
Does anyone else think Hagler was robbed?
For me, Hagler is the best fighter of his generation. I think Leonard was a wonderful boxer and he worked the fight game to his advantage flawlessly before his fights which is a great asset for any boxer, but I don't think he beat Hagler.
Thoughts?

Re: Hagler v Leonard - How do you score the fight?
I think Hagler landed consistently but rarely put a run of punches together. I think he had Leonard in trouble at the end of a couple of rounds. I also think Ray was exhausted at the end. But I think Leonard won fair and square. He only engaged when he had to and then threw a blizzard of punches before he moved away again.dsimpson wrote:How do you score the fight? I think I had Ray winning by 2.

Re: Hagler v Leonard - How do you score the fight?
I had it 1 round to Leonard and i think its the fifth i scored to Hagler which could've gone either way but it was so close its what style you like better really
Re: Hagler v Leonard - How do you score the fight?
I think I had Hagler winning by rounds 7-5. I remember having it 6-5 Hagler after 11, and being concerned about a draw if Leonard pulled off the 12th.
Re: Hagler v Leonard - How do you score the fight?
i love marvin but he sure as hell didnt win that fight. i have seen it many times and i always wish he could be a little better, but he never is. he is always 2 rounds down however i look at it. and if you really want to know, i think beneath all the bitterness and hard luck feelings of being robbed - marvin knows it too.
Re: Hagler v Leonard - How do you score the fight?
I've scored it several times, and have had Leonard winning every time. Most often I've scored it 116-113.
Re: Hagler v Leonard - How do you score the fight?
How many times are we going to do this one ?
I don't care about any old book.
Sugar Ray Leonard won that fight fairly comfortably.
Hagler is a great fighter no question.
But for the love of god drop this ... it wasn't close enough to warrant this much of an investigation.
We all love Marvin but come on now.
Ray won that fight clear and clean.

Every time I watch this fight and score it I come up with a
win for Ray Leonard. Even the GF who 'hates' Ray Leonard
and is a Hagler fan sees it for Leonard...which is why I am
'banned' from watching this fight around her.

I'm a Thomas Hearns guy.
But I know Marvin and Ray beat him 1st time out.
Yet Thomas Hearns is a man that paid many future bills for present boxers.
If it wasn't for Thomas Hearns ...
I wouldn't have attended
Morales v Barrera 1
Lewis v Grant
Jones v Woods
Jones v Ruiz
Calzaghe v Jones
Thank Tommy Hearns for that.

Hearns is my favourite out of the 'Four'.
I tend to prefer to watch him in his middle years however
if that makes any sense...81-91....I dont know why.
He seems so vunerable, yet powerful.

I think it's an honest debate. I don't think there was a robbery. I think there was a close decision that had to go one way or the other. I think Leonard deserved it but I can appreciate those who argue for Marvin.
The thing is, those flurries of Leonard's landed. Okay, some were blocked on the arms and gloves but even so Hagler never looked to counter during those flurries he put his arms up as a shield and then continued the stalk.

Absolutely. Even the officials couldn't agree - a split decision. I have no issues with folks who think Leonard won. I just happen to disagree.Ezzard wrote:I think it's an honest debate. Always come out with Leonard 115 Hagler 113, have scored this fight 3 times, 20 years apart and always come up with that.

I had Hagler up by two points. Rounds 1 and 3 even if you dont want to be partial to leonard. Nice try by the sugarman tho
